AExecutive Summary — the Big Picture

⚠ Three things changed between Friday's close and the Asia open. (1) Washington chose pump prices over Russia sanctions: Trump signed a waiver Friday night suspending the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act — 86–11 in the Senate, 262–159 in the House, up to 100% secondary tariffs on buyers of Russian crude and gas, due to take effect Sunday Oct 18 — in exchange for a 4.8 million-ton Russian diesel pledge and a Treasury licence for Russian diesel imports through April 7, 2027. Zelensky: it "helps only the Russians"; Tillis: "beyond irresponsible". The read is not about Ukraine; it is that the White House is now optimising every lever for the November 3 fuel price, which lowers the odds of a pre-midterm strike on Iran and raises the odds of a sanctions-light, blockade-leaky equilibrium that keeps Brent above $100 for longer. (2) Tehran restated the six-day/seven-day Hormuz framework at the OIC in Baghdad (Araghchi: strait reopens day six, talks day seven, if the blockade is lifted, oil sanctions dropped and all fronts including Lebanon cease-fire); Vance's answer Sunday was "enrichment first". Polymarket moved the ceasefire-through-midterms contract from 78% to 81% on it. (3) The shipping tape did not improve: the IRGC now claims two ~2M-barrel tankers struck mines Oct 17–18 (one immobilised; unverified), a tug off the UAE took two projectiles Sunday (one minor casualty), UKMTO's 10+ attacks is a record week, Hormuz flows are 68% of baseline (11.62 vs 17.15 mb/d), Riyadh's Kingdom Centre sent tenants home, and a Saudi AH-6i went down in Najran. Brent's first Asia print is $108.02 (−1.7%) — the market priced the Araghchi offer and the Russian diesel, not the mines. Gold $4,183 (+0.4%) and BTC $80,776 (−1.0%) say the same: a modest de-escalation bid, no risk appetite. China Q3 GDP at 22:00 ET (cons 4.4%) is the first scheduled print of the week; the 20Y auction Wednesday 1pm and Meta/Tesla at 4pm are the hinge.

Cycle position

Late-cycle · nominal hot / real cold

IP +0.7% and capacity utilisation 76.9% (highest output since 2018) against NFP +29k, UR 4.2%, UMich 46.3 and negative real wages (CPI 3.7% vs AHE ~3.5%). GDPNow 3.6% for Q3 is inventories (+1.9pp) and nominal spend; the advance print is Oct 29, the day after the FOMC. The 10-day Fed silence means the data and the war set the price with no referee.

Dominant regime

Stagflation 47% (from 48%)

Reflation 23% (+1) · Goldilocks 7% · Bust 23%. The one-point shift to reflation is the weekend's two supply-side facts — Russian diesel licensed, Hormuz framework restated — against an attack tempo that is still rising. CPI +0.6% m/m with energy +5.2% m/m, PPI +1.3% m/m, import prices +8.1% y/y: inflation is a supply shock the Fed has already hiked into once (Sep 16) and will not hike into again on Oct 28 (hold 87%).

"Beautiful deleveraging" status

Ugly · policy mix inconsistent

FY26 deficit $2.0T (+12%), net interest ~$1.1T, a Fed that hiked into it, and TIC August confirming the top-two foreign creditors are sellers again — Japan −$35.6B to $1.068T (4th straight, lowest since Dec 2024), China −$27.3B to $590.7B (3rd straight, 18-year low). The UK ($1.009T, first time above $1T), Canada (+$38.3B) and Belgium (+$19.8B) are the replacement bid — private, leveraged, basis-trade money, not official reserves. Monetary restraint offset by fiscal expansion and a war premium the Fed cannot print away.

Great-power triangle

Adversarial · Moscow just got paid

The Graham Act waiver is the first material US concession to Russia since the March diesel licence; it arrives as Moscow runs 320 drones at Ukraine's grid in 12 hours and the Oct 12 "energy ceasefire" is dead. Beijing sells Treasuries into a $2.0T deficit (China holdings 18-year low), buys Russian crude at a discount that is closing, and prints Q3 GDP tonight (cons 4.4%, below the 4.5–5% target floor). Tehran's Araghchi tours Baghdad offering mediation in a Yemen war Riyadh says Tehran is fighting; Yemen's FM rejected it Sunday. No vertex offers an off-ramp; one vertex (Moscow) was just rewarded for waiting.

Desk vs market

Desk ceasefire 70% (from 68%)

Eleven points below Polymarket. The two-point desk upgrade is the Graham waiver — a President trading a signed sanctions law for diesel is not a President about to put a MOAB on Kharg before Nov 3 (pre-midterm strike cut to 24% from 27%). The gap to market is the mines: a second claimed VLCC mine strike and a Sunday attack off the UAE are the signature of a campaign widening, and the market is pricing Araghchi's text, which Washington has rejected once (Sept 26) and now conditions on enrichment. Post-midterm strike by Dec 31: 45%, unchanged — the MOAB plans and the +50% tanker sortie rate are for after the election.

Where we are

The US economy is running a nominal boom inside a real stall. Nominal GDP is tracking ~7% annualised (3.6% GDPNow real plus a 3.7% deflator), corporate revenues and tax receipts look fine, and the Dow made a weekly gain. Underneath, hiring has stopped (NFP +29k, three-month average below 50k), real wages are negative, consumer sentiment is at 46.3 — a level previously seen only in June 2022 and the 2008 trough — and the equal-weight S&P beat the cap-weighted index by 2.5 points last week because the AI-capex complex is being sold (SOX −11.4%, XLK −7.7%, IGV −7.4%) while staples (+5.0%), energy (+4.9%) and health care (+3.5%) are bought. That is a textbook late-cycle, stagflationary rotation: the market is paying for pricing power and cash flow and selling duration-of-earnings. Breadth is 28% above the 50-day, Nasdaq new lows outran new highs 7-to-1 Friday, Fear & Greed printed 18. These are the conditions from which tactical rallies start — and from which the second leg down starts if the catalyst cluster (20Y auction, Meta/Tesla capex, FOMC, Israel vote) disappoints.

The dominant macro regime

Stagflation remains the base case at 47%. The energy shock is not transitory while Hormuz runs at 68% of baseline, Iraq exports 2.6 mb/d against 3.5 pre-war, Iranian crude exports are zero (Kpler, September) and the IEA's emergency barrels are already announced and partly delivered. Headline CPI 3.7% with core 2.6% is the signature: the Fed's own measure is near target while the public's is not, which is why the Fed hiked once (Sep 16, to 3.75–4.00%) and now sits — hold 87% for Oct 28, December hike 74–92% depending on the venue. The policy response is adequate for core, inadequate for headline, and irrelevant for the strait. The Graham waiver is a fiscal-political response to the same problem: Washington is buying diesel supply with sanctions relief because it cannot buy Hormuz throughput with carriers.

Risks vs opportunities

Risks: a 20Y auction tail Wednesday into a foreign-official-seller backdrop (TIC: Japan and China net sellers four and three months running) would re-open the 5.33% 10Y high and break the 50-day on the S&P (7,706–7,736, now resistance); a Meta or Tesla capex cut at 4pm the same day is a credit event for the AI-infrastructure cohort (CRWV −25% last week) and for Korea (KOSPI −40% from peak); a confirmed mine in the convoy lane or a US-crewed hull hit converts the IRGC's claims into a war-risk repricing. Opportunities: the rotation pair (health care/energy/equal-weight vs semis/software) paid six of seven sessions and the weekend tape did not change its inputs; silver's COT shows fresh commercial shorts into a −54% drawdown with retail creations still positive; defence primes report this week (RTX/NOC Tue, LMT Thu) with a bipartisan $87.6B supplemental unenacted and interceptors fired nightly over Riyadh; Korea is the forced-seller market Howard Marks would be buying in thirds.

What the market is not pricing

(1) That the Graham waiver is a template. If the administration will suspend a 86–11 sanctions law for 4.8M tons of diesel 17 days before an election, it will license Iranian LPG, Iraqi Basrah barrels and shadow-fleet VLCCs by any name necessary — the "blockade" becomes a toll booth. That is bearish the Brent war premium at the margin, bullish Russian and Gulf producers, and bearish the dollar's sanctions credibility — gold's structural bid. (2) That Japan's Treasury selling is intervention finance, not a view — ¥15.4T of yen-buying July 30–Aug 26 was funded by Treasuries; at USD/JPY 158 the MoF is back in range, which means more selling precisely when the 20Y auction needs a bid. (3) That the Israeli election (Oct 27) and the FOMC (Oct 28) land 18 hours apart: every poll has both blocs short of 61; a Netanyahu loss removes the actor most committed to a pre-emptive strike window and is, perversely, the single most bullish-oil outcome on the calendar because it removes the deterrent to Iranian escalation in Lebanon. (4) That the Fed's silence is itself a position — no voice until Oct 28 means a hot UK CPI (Wed, cons 3.4%) or a Japan CPI jump (Fri, cons 2.8–3.0% from 1.9%) sets global front-ends with no US push-back.

MOVE 102.5 (Thu) — bond vol fell as rates rallied; the 20Y auction is the MOVE catalyst. Fear & Greed 18. Black Monday's 39th anniversary is Monday; the set-up (crowded single-theme long, rising yields, dollar off a high, an oil shock) rhymes, the leverage does not.

CCross-Asset Analysis — Druckenmiller lens

Bonds vs equities

The bond market rallied 28bp from the Wednesday high (5.33% → 5.05% Thursday low) on a growth scare, not an inflation all-clear — the same week printed CPI +0.6% m/m, PPI +1.3% and import prices +8.1% y/y. Equities read the same rally as a reason to sell duration-of-earnings (semis, software) rather than to buy it, which is the tell: when the 10Y falls on bad news and the Nasdaq falls with it, the market is pricing an earnings-cycle peak in the AI complex, not a Fed put. The 2s10s at +34–37bp has gone from bear-steepening (Oct 7, term-premium) to bull-steepening (Friday, front-end relief) in ten days; the next move is set by Wednesday's 20Y auction. TIC's August detail matters here: the $83B increase in foreign holdings was private money (UK, Canada, Belgium — custodial, leveraged, basis trades), while official holders (Japan, China) sold. Private leveraged money is a fair-weather bid; it demands concession at auctions. Bonds are saying growth is slowing; equities are saying the growth that is slowing is the growth they own. Both are right, which is the stagflation signature.

Risk assets vs safe havens

Divergence is wide and widening. Gold (+0.4% Monday, flat on the week at $4,183) held while the Nasdaq lost 4.5%; Treasuries rallied while credit spreads (HY OAS ~321bp) did not tighten; the dollar fell while the yen did not rally (USD/JPY 158 — the yen is not a haven at a 3.9% real-rate deficit to the US). The defensive rotation is inside equities — staples +5.0%, energy +4.9%, health care +3.5% on the week — rather than out of equities: the Dow made a weekly gain, and the equal-weight S&P outperformed by 2.5 points. That is a positioning unwind (Goldman PB: hedge funds sold AI at the second-fastest pace in a year) layered on a macro rotation, not a liquidation. Bitcoin confirms: seven sessions in a $2,000 band with ETF outflows every week in October — crypto is neither the haven (gold's job) nor the risk proxy (Nasdaq's job); it is the asset nobody needs to touch. VIX 20 with the front of the curve inverted says the market is hedging the next two weeks, not the next two quarters.

Liquidity conditions

Global liquidity is contracting at the margin and the war is the drain. The Fed hiked in September and holds a shrinking balance sheet; the ECB and BoE face 3.8% and 3.4% inflation with hikes priced; the BoJ meets Oct 29–30 with CPI reaccelerating; Korea's president says rates must rise "soon" to close the US gap; the RBA hiked to 4.60%. Against that, three injections: the PBoC/MoF's ¥550B debt quota plus mortgage subsidies (fiscal, not monetary — PBoC on hold through Q1 2027 per Reuters), the IEA's emergency barrels and the US 17M-bbl SPR exchange (supply, not money), and now a Russian diesel licence (supply via sanctions relief). None of these is base money; all of them are attempts to buy down the energy tax without easing. Crypto's on-chain liquidity shows the net: stablecoin supply −$1.35B and DeFi TVL −$1.34B in a week — identical numbers, which Sentora reads as capital exiting on-chain markets. US financial conditions: the S&P off 2% from a record, HY at 321bp, the dollar off its high — still loose by historical standards, tightening by trend.

Dollar implications

DXY 101.79 is off the 102.94 high (18-month-high zone) on the collapse in October-hike odds, not on any loss of carry: the 2Y at 4.74% still pays more than any G10 front-end. The weekend adds a structural input on the bear side: the Graham waiver tells every reserve manager that US sanctions are negotiable for a domestic fuel price — the dollar's weaponisation discount narrows, which is marginally bearish DXY and structurally bullish gold (central-bank demand) and, in time, CNY settlement. Tactically: DXY >102.3 breaks the rotation pair and crypto (trade 7's second entry trigger); DXY <101.3 lets silver run and keeps EM (Korea, Brazil post-runoff) alive. For oil, a softer dollar is a tailwind to Brent in local terms for China and India — the two buyers who just saw the price of Russian crude become un-sanctioned. For Treasuries, the dollar's weakness and Japan's intervention finance are the same trade: USD/JPY above 158 means more MoF selling of Treasuries into an auction week.

DScenario Matrix — Dalio "All Weather" framework

Rising growth + rising inflation (Reflation)

23% (+1)

Path: Araghchi's six-day framework becomes a text; Washington licenses Gulf/Russian barrels into the midterms; China prints 4.5%+ tonight with a stimulus follow-through; Meta/Tesla hold capex. Brent $95–100 with a $20 premium that does not clear; 10Y 5.2–5.4% on growth and supply; semis and Korea squeeze 10–15%; gold flat, silver +10% on industrial demand; BTC $88K. Winners: EM, materials, financials, short-duration. Losers: long bonds, staples, defence.

Falling growth + rising inflation (Stagflation) — NOW

47% (−1)

Path: the base case — attacks continue inside the Gulf, flows stay ~65–70% of baseline, Brent $105–115, CPI 3.5–4% through Q1, Fed holds Oct 28 and hikes Dec 9, hiring at zero, consumer sentiment in the 40s, the AI-capex cycle decelerates into an earnings-estimate reset. 10Y 5.0–5.3% with a steeper curve; S&P 7,300–7,700 range; staples/energy/health care lead; semis/software lag; gold $4,100–4,400 grinding; BTC $75–85K; KOSPI bottoming in thirds. The trades in G are built for this box.

Rising growth + falling inflation (Goldilocks)

Path: a signed Hormuz corridor, flows back to 15+ mb/d in weeks, Brent to $80, an October CPI at +0.1%, and the Fed off hold. Not on any calendar before Nov 3; the Israeli election, the FOMC and the MOAB plans all sit in the way. If it arrives it arrives after the midterms. S&P 8,000+, 10Y 4.6%, DXY 99, gold $3,900, BTC $95K.

Falling growth + falling inflation (Bust)

23%

Path: a 20Y tail Wednesday + a Meta/Tesla capex cut at 4pm = a credit event in AI infrastructure (CoreWeave, Nebius, the private-credit data-centre book) that becomes a funding event for regional banks (ZION/WAL Monday night are the canaries); oil demand destruction takes Brent to $90 regardless of Hormuz; CPI falls because volumes fall. S&P 7,000–7,200, 10Y 4.5% in a bull-flattener, VIX 30+, gold $4,400 then lower on margin calls, BTC $70K. Trade 6 is the hedge for this box.

Trend: stationary in stagflation with the exit vector tilted one point toward reflation by the weekend's supply-side moves (Russian diesel licence, Hormuz framework restated) — but the tilt reverses on the first confirmed mine in the convoy lane. The probability mass to watch is the 23% bust box: it is the only quadrant that requires no geopolitical event, only two bad prints on Wednesday afternoon.

ESector & Theme Spotlight

1. Energy and the distillate crack — the weekend made it a political trade

Energy was +4.9% on the week and the distillate crack is at record width (heating oil ~$129/bbl-equivalent against Brent $108; European diesel 2× YTD; US diesel above $6). The Graham waiver is the policy confirmation: when the White House suspends a signed sanctions law for 4.8M tons of Russian diesel, the scarce molecule is distillate, and the US refiner with complex capacity (VLO reports Thu, MPC/PSX the week after) is the beneficiary of both the shortage and the licensed feedstock. Monday's −1.7% in Brent is a flat-price move; the crack does not care about Araghchi's text until Hormuz product flows normalise, and product tankers are the ones being hit (Al Jubayl, Gulf of Oman). Momentum: XLE above its 50- and 200-day; OIH/SLB (Fri) the oilfield read. Risk: WTI November expiry Tuesday with CTAs max-long — a $3–4 air pocket in the front is normal and is not a thesis change.

2. Defence — the week the US primes report into a nightly interceptor war

Rheinmetall +5.3% Friday as the DAX's top gainer; the S&P 1500 A&D index is −19% from its August high and LMT −25% from its 2026 high. The gap closes this week or it doesn't: RTX and NOC report Tuesday, LMT Thursday, GE Aerospace Tuesday. Inputs: Saudi coalition interceptions nightly (two ballistic missiles at Khamis Mushait and a drone at Riyadh Sunday; four drones Saturday; a missile at Yanbu Friday), Egypt moving toward a parliamentary vote on defending Saudi Arabia, the $87.6B supplemental unenacted and bipartisan, US tanker sorties +50% in October, Roosevelt CSG and Makin Island ARG deployed (9,000–20,000 personnel) and MOAB plans drawn. Interceptor consumption is the backlog story the market has not priced because the stocks de-rated with the broader "long-duration" sell-off. Avoid BA (commercial-aero fuel exposure); prefer LMT/RTX/NOC/HII/ITA.

3. Health care and staples — the new leadership on a down tape

XLV +3.5% and XLP +5.0% on the week while the index fell 2%; health care printed intraday records on a −1.1% day. RBC moved health care to overweight and tech to market-weight; the Goldman prime book shows the hedge-fund rotation started, not finished. This week's prints are the pricing-power test at a 3.7% CPI: PG (Thu), PM (Wed), ABT/TMO/DHR (Wed), ELV (Wed), ISRG (Tue). The second-level question is whether staples at +5% in a week have become the crowded trade — they have not: XLP is still −2% YTD against the S&P's +12%, and the rotation has run for seven sessions, not seven months.

Contrarian — second-level thinking

Korea. KOSPI −40% from the June peak, −7.57% Thursday with a circuit breaker, foreigners' first net buy in nine sessions Friday — and the Nikkei December future closed Friday night at −3%, which means Monday's Asia open re-tests the low. The first-level read is "AI bust, avoid Korea". The second-level read is that Samsung and SK Hynix are the vendor chain for every hyperscaler whose capex is reported this week; if Meta/Tesla hold capex Wednesday, Korea is the highest-beta long on the planet from a −40% base; if they cut, the position is sized for it (first third only). Silver. Commercials added 2,150 shorts on rising open interest into a −54% drawdown while SLV creations are +17M shares since June and Jane Street already distributed two-thirds of its Q4-2025 position. The crowd is short the washout; the dealer-side distribution is two quarters old. Russia-linked energy, not Russia. The waiver re-rates the shadow fleet's economics and the India/China refiner arbitrage (CREA: Indian refiners' fuel exports to the West +43% m/m in September) — the way to own it in a compliant book is Reliance, the product-tanker fleet (Baltic Clean Tanker Index +3% Friday) and the distillate crack. What not to buy: the Nasdaq dip on the first green day — the Goldman prime data, the COT (commercials shortest NDX on the chart) and Wednesday's capex cluster say the second leg is not yet priced.

FCrypto Deep Dive

BTC / ETH — seventh session in a $2,000 band; ETH is the one breaking down

BTC $80,776 (−1.0% 24h, −2.6% w/w) sits on the 50-day ($80,425) after briefly testing $80,000 on the CPI dip; the 24h range narrowed to $80,823–82,178 Saturday and leaked lower Sunday. Liquidations cooled to $359M (78% longs) from the $937M Oct 15 flush — the leverage that could be forced out has been. ETH $2,365 (−2.1%) made a new local low; ETH/BTC 0.0292 is printing fresh cycle lows, and ETH long liquidations ($82M Sunday, $265M on Oct 15) exceed BTC's. On-chain: MVRV below its 30th percentile (25.7% — a zone BTC has spent ~25% of its history in), one-year realised vol 43% against a ten-year average of 64%, Google search interest at a multi-year low. Stablecoin supply −$1.35B and DeFi TVL −$1.34B in the week to Oct 16; $6.72B of loans within 5% of liquidation. Correlation: BTC's 30-day correlation to the Nasdaq has fallen toward zero — it did not sell with semis last week and did not rally with gold; it is uncorrelated because it is unowned at the margin. That is a floor condition, not a bottom signal; bottoms need a buyer.

Institutional flows

Spot BTC ETFs: Friday −$82.4M (IBIT −$71.8M, FBTC −$10.6M, nine funds at zero); week Oct 12–16 −$228.4M (IBIT −$165.4M, FBTC −$60.2M, MSBT +$6.7M, BITB +$2.2M, BTCO −$4.1M, Grayscale Mini −$7.6M); October MTD −$614.9M; 2026 YTD +$315.5M; since launch ~$56.9B; AUM $104.3B holding ~1.276M BTC. The funds have shed more than 10,000 BTC in two weeks. ETH ETFs: week −$320.1M, ETHA −$299M (93% of it) with FETH +$10.5M — one issuer's client base is the ETH seller. Total crypto ETPs −$610.7M on the week after −$1.286B the week before (Farside); CoinShares global −$434M. The IBIT holder is the marginal institutional seller and its 2024–25 cost basis is $60–75K: this is profit protection into a Fed-hike cycle, not capitulation. Nothing on the calendar forces a buyer before Nov 11 (MSCI's final "non-operating companies" list — the MSTR mechanics are a seller, effective after Nov 30). Polymarket "BTC hits $90K in 2026" 55%.

Regulatory landscape

No new US rule this week; the policy news is adjacent: the Graham Act waiver shows a Treasury willing to issue broad licences fast (Russian diesel through Apr 7, 2027), and the same OFAC machinery has frozen ~$350M in Iran-linked crypto (CENTCOM, Oct 16). The quantum narrative (a "Quantum Alliance" formed over warnings that ~6.4M BTC sit in exposed address types) and a $4.8M Ledger "spy-chip" theft are the weekend's retail headlines — neither moves institutional flow, both suppress it. MSCI Nov 11 remains the only hard date. ETH staking ETF: VanEck withdrew its Lido staked-ETH registration (no shares issued).

War impact on crypto

Safe haven or risk proxy? Neither, and the weekend is the cleanest test yet: a claimed double VLCC mine strike, record UKMTO attack count, a Riyadh alert and a US sanctions waiver all landed between Friday's close and Sunday evening — gold +0.4%, Brent −1.7%, BTC −1.0%. Over the conflict (from Feb 28): gold is +25% from pre-war, Brent +49% from $72.48, BTC roughly flat to down from the ~$85K pre-war band and −36% from the Oct 2025 ATH $126,198. Bitcoin has not been digital gold in this war; it has been a high-beta tech asset that lost its beta. ETF flows by phase: inflows during the April and June ceasefires, outflows through the July collapse and the September rejection of Iran's proposal, and now four straight October weeks of net outflows while the ceasefire contract rises to 81% — flows now track the Fed, not the war. Stablecoins as capital-flight proxy: supply −$1.35B w/w to $305.2B — contraction, not flight; Tron's stablecoin cap grew ~$555M in a week, the Iran/Russia/Gulf USDT rail staying active while US-regulated supply shrinks. Sanctions evasion: CENTCOM's ~$350M freeze is the US side; Iran's LPG channel (8 tankers / 4.1M bbl per Reuters) is settling in yuan and USDT per market talk, unconfirmed. Russia's oil-settlement pilots in USDT become less necessary the day a US licence covers the diesel. Mining: Henry Hub $3.05 and the Texas/ERCOT grid favour US miners; hash rate is near record and unaffected by Gulf energy prices. Historical analogue: Russia–Ukraine 2022 — BTC fell 15% in the two weeks after Feb 24, rallied 25% into mid-March, then followed the Fed down 60%. The 2026 pattern is the same shape at lower amplitude: the war is a two-week factor, the Fed is a two-year factor.

GConviction Views & Trade Ideas

1. Long the stagflation rotation pair: XLV + XLE + RSP vs SOXX + IGV HIGH

Thesis: Paid six of seven sessions last week; the weekend tape (second mine claim, UAE tug attack, Graham waiver = distillate politics) favours the long leg; Meta/Tesla capex Wednesday 4pm is the asymmetric catalyst — a cut is a credit event for the short leg, a raise is already in the long leg's energy demand. RBC's health-care overweight, the Goldman prime data and the COT (commercials shortest NDX on record) say the institutional rotation has started, not finished. Risk/reward: +6–8% on the pair through FOMC vs −4% on a signed Hormuz text plus a semis squeeze. 1:1.8. Levels: SOXX — cover one-third on the first +3% day (squeeze), re-enter on a bounce to the 20-day. XLV: add on any close above Friday's record. Kills it: Macron's Gulf tour (Oct 19–21) produces an Iranian-signed corridor text, or China prints 4.6%+ tonight with new stimulus (reflation quadrant).

2. Long 10Y/20Y duration into Wednesday's $13B 20Y auction, hedged with a 2s10s steepener HIGH · tactical

Thesis: 10Y 5.08% after a 28bp rally; the 20Y at 1pm Wednesday is the first coupon supply since the rally and the first since TIC confirmed Japan (−$35.6B) and China (−$27.3B) as sellers with private UK/Canada/Belgium money as the replacement bid — a bid that demands concession. Two outcomes, both tradeable: a clean auction (indirects >65%, no tail) confirms the growth-fear bid and takes the 10Y to 4.95%; a tail >2bp with weak indirects re-opens 5.19–5.33% and bear-steepens. Structure: long TLT/TY half-size + long 2Y/short 10Y steepener half-size: the steepener wins on a tail, duration wins on a clean print; the combination loses only on a bull-flattener (bust signal before Wednesday). Levels: 10Y 4.95 / 5.05 / 5.08 / 5.19 / 5.25 / 5.33 / 5.365. 2s10s +30 / +34 / +44 / +50 (AMBER). Note: the Fed is silent through the auction — there is no Fedspeak to lean on either way.

3. Long silver — accumulate the washout; the COT says the shorts are fresh MEDIUM

Thesis: Oct 13 COT: large spec net long 22,631 (−522), commercial net short 39,442 (+2,150) with open interest +3,303 — new shorts into a −54% drawdown while SLV creations are +17M shares since June and Jane Street's dealer distribution (20.6M → 6.7M shares) is two quarters old. Spot $57.43 Monday (+0.8%), G/S 72.9, dollar off its high, Fed peak priced for October. Entry: first third on ($56–57.5 — filled); add above $58.50; again above $60. Target $62–64 (+10–12%); stop a daily close below $54.50. 1:2.2. Kills it: a 20Y tail that sends DXY >103 and real yields up (silver falls faster than gold); a second Korean margin cascade. Instruments: SLV/SIVR, SI Dec, SLV Dec $55/$62 call spread (~1:3) for defined risk through FOMC; miners (PAAS, HL, AG) only after a second green close.

4. Long the distillate crack + refiners (VLO Thu); Brent Dec $115/$125 call spread for the strike tail MEDIUM

Thesis: The market has priced the IEA's barrels, the SPR exchange and now Russian diesel; it is pricing the Araghchi text (Brent −1.7% Monday) and not the mines. The crack is the cleaner expression than flat price: heating oil ~$129 against Brent $108, European diesel 2× YTD, IEA diesel deficit through 2H27, product tankers the ones being hit. Risk/reward: cracks +10–15% on escalation / −10% on a Hormuz framework plus a confirmed Russian diesel surge; refiners +8–12% / −8%; the call spread (~1:3) is the defined-risk tail for a US strike (desk 24% pre-Nov 3, 45% by Dec 31). Monday–Tuesday risk: WTI Nov expiry Tuesday with CTAs max-long — a $3–4 front-month air pocket is normal. Levels: Brent $100 / $104.60 / $107 / $108 / $109.50 / $110 / $114.50–115 / $120 / $126. WTI $95 / $99 / $101.4 / $105.

5. Long US defence primes into RTX/NOC (Tue) and LMT (Thu) vs short airlines (UAL Tue, AAL Thu) MEDIUM

Thesis: S&P 1500 A&D −19% from the August high, LMT −25% from its 2026 high, while Rheinmetall +5.3% Friday, interceptors are fired over Riyadh nightly, tanker sorties are +50% in October, the Roosevelt/Makin Island surge is at sea, Egypt is moving to a parliamentary vote on Saudi defence and the $87.6B supplemental is unenacted. The prints are the backlog catalyst. Airlines: jet fuel at $108 Brent, Kingdom Centre tenants working from home, Gulf hub traffic impaired. Risk/reward: ITA +10–15% through the lame-duck supplemental vs −8% on a Hormuz agreement plus a Democratic sweep (Polymarket 63%). Instruments: ITA, LMT, RTX, NOC, HII; avoid BA. JETS/UAL/AAL short: cover on Brent <$100. Levels: LMT $400 area add zone; RTX no pre-positioning above a 3% gap; ITA stop below the October low.

6. SPX Oct 30 7,500/7,200 put spread + VIX Nov 22/30 call spread — own the event cluster MEDIUM

Thesis: VIX 19.99 with 22.31 intraday on a −1.1% day, the front of the VIX curve inverted, S&P below the 50-day, breadth 28%, Fear & Greed 18, Black Monday's anniversary Monday, no Fed voice for ten days, and a dense cluster: China GDP tonight, 20Y Wed 1pm, Meta/Tesla Wed 4pm, LMT/PG Thu, PMIs Fri, Brazil Oct 25, Israel election + FOMC Oct 27–28, GDP + PCE Oct 29. Implied vol is still cheap relative to the realised path. Structure: finance with a short Oct 23 7,850 call (the Oct 6 record 7,819 caps). Risk/reward: pays on the bust quadrant (23%) and on a 20Y tail; loses the premium in a Meta/Tesla relief rally. This is the hedge for trades 1–5, not a directional short. Levels: SPX 7,819 / 7,736 / 7,706 / 7,659 / 7,610 / 7,500 (key) / 7,300. VIX 16.5 / 20 / 22.3 / 25 / 30.

7. Bitcoin — stand aside at the floor; two entries only LOW

Thesis: Seventh session in $80–82K, sitting on the 50-day ($80,425), ETF seller persistent but small (−$82M Friday, nine funds at zero), no buyer appeared, ETH/BTC at cycle lows, MSCI removes a leveraged bid in November, stablecoin supply contracting. Entries: (i) daily close above $84.5K with a positive ETF day → momentum long to $88K, stop $82K; (ii) a flush through $79,400 to $77.2K that prints an ETF inflow within 48 hours → capitulation long, stop $74K, target $85K. No position in between. Macro triggers: DXY 102.3 = (ii); a clean 20Y auction = (i) becomes more likely. ETH: no long until ETH/BTC stops making lows (0.0292); ETHA is the seller. MSTR: short premium-to-NAV into Nov 11 via MSTR vs IBIT if premium >1.3×. Levels: $77.2K / $79.4K / $80.0K / $80.4K / $82.2K / $84.5K / $87K / $88K. ETH $2,350 / $2,365 / $2,425 / $2,520 / $2,650.

8. Korea — thirds accumulation in EWY; first third on Monday's gap-down if foreigners buy LOW

Thesis: −40% from peak, −7.57% Thursday with a circuit breaker, foreigners' first net buy in nine sessions Friday — and the Nikkei future says Asia gaps lower Monday, which is the entry, not the exit. The HBM/memory thesis is intact; the price has halved; the president is talking rate hikes (bullish won, which is what the foreign bid needs). Risk/reward: first third only; −15% further downside sized; +30% to the 200-day over two quarters. Stop: KOSPI close below 5,300. Kills it: a Meta/Tesla capex cut Wednesday (Korea is the vendor chain) — which is also what makes it the Marks trade: buy what the forced seller must sell, in size you can hold through the print.

HRisk Radar

Top 3 tail risks

1 · Confirmed mine in the convoy lane / US-crewed hull hit

The IRGC now claims two ~2M-bbl tankers mined Oct 17–18 with one immobilised; CENTCOM says the strait is cleared and ships are hit by projectiles. The first independently confirmed mine casualty in the US-guided lane converts a 68%-flow equilibrium into a war-risk repricing: Brent gaps $8–12, VLCC premiums back to $10M/transit, Lloyd's suspends cover, the K3 traffic light goes RED on fiscal (a supplemental becomes urgent) and the pre-midterm strike odds (desk 24%) double. Probability of confirmation this week: 20%.

2 · 20Y tail + Meta/Tesla capex cut, same afternoon

Wednesday 1pm and 4pm. A tail >2bp with indirects <60% in the first coupon auction since TIC showed Japan/China selling, followed by a hyperscaler capex cut, is the bust-quadrant trigger: AI-infrastructure credit (CRWV −25% last week; private-credit data-centre book) reprices, regional-bank exposure (ZION/WAL report Monday night) becomes the story, VIX 30. Joint probability ~12%; either alone ~30%.

3 · Israel Oct 27 → FOMC Oct 28 → GDP/PCE Oct 29 — 72 hours, three regimes

Every poll has both Israeli blocs short of 61; Trump endorsed Netanyahu Sunday; Polymarket has Eisenkot at 54%. A Netanyahu loss removes the most strike-committed actor and the deterrent to Hezbollah/Iranian escalation in Lebanon simultaneously; 18 hours later the Fed holds with a hawkish statement into a 3.7% CPI; the next morning Q3 GDP prints 3%+ with core PCE ≥0.3%. The combination is a bear-steepener with an oil bid — the configuration the long bond cannot survive. Trade 2 must be flat by Oct 27.

What would change the base case

To reflation: an Iranian-signed Hormuz text through Pakistan or Macron's Gulf tour; Kpler flows above 14 mb/d for two weeks; China 4.6%+ tonight with a fiscal follow-through; Meta/Tesla raising capex; Brent <$100 and DXY <101 together. To bust: a 20Y tail; a capex cut; claims above 230k; ZION/WAL credit commentary on data-centre or consumer books; HY OAS >375bp; KOSPI closing below 5,300 with foreigners selling. To a worse stagflation: a confirmed mine; a successful strike on Yanbu or Ras Tanura; UK CPI above 3.6% (BoE hike priced); Japan CPI 3%+ (BoJ hike, yen carry unwind). The base case survives all of Monday–Tuesday's calendar; it is tested Wednesday afternoon.

Black swans — peripheral vision

Taiwan opportunistic action while two US carriers sit in the Arabian Sea and the third (Roosevelt) is at Yokosuka for Keen Sword 27 — PLA drills during Keen Sword (Oct 19–29) are the tell; the Nikkei future's −3% Friday night is partly this.
Russia second front on European gas now that the Graham sanctions are waived — Moscow has been rewarded, not deterred; European storage 67% vs 80% norm; a Baltic subsea-infrastructure incident or a Nord-Stream-style "accident" reprices TTF 50%+ and the EUR to 1.08. Romanian F-16s already shot down two drones in NATO waters Friday.
Iranian strike on US data-centre/AI infrastructure — Rezaei said it is "within range"; a drone at a Gulf hyperscaler region (UAE/Saudi/Qatar) or a cyber event on US grid-connected facilities hits the exact cohort that is already being sold.
A US sovereign rating action — Moody's reviews France Friday (Aa3 neg), not the US, but a $2.0T deficit, a $1.1T interest bill, a suspended sanctions law and foreign-official selling are the ingredients; a surprise negative outlook is the K3 #8 RED.
Brazil Oct 25 — Bolsonaro at 81%; a disputed count or a Lula upset is a 5–8% BRL move and an EM-wide risk-off on the Monday the Israel/FOMC week starts.
Quantum headline risk in crypto — the "6.4M BTC exposed" narrative is now mainstream; a credible lab announcement would be a −20% gap with no bid.

JInstitutional Holders — BTC, GLD, SLV ETFs

13F data is Q2 2026 (quarter ended Jun 30; filed by Aug 14). Q3 2026 13Fs are due Nov 14 — the next holder update. ETF flow data is daily. No new 13F filings over the weekend.

SLV — iShares Silver Trust

5	Jane Street Group	6,683,383	$357.4M	~41K (Q3-25) → ~20.6M (Q4-25, ~500× — flagged) → 6.68M (Q2-26)	Distributed ~68% from peak

8	CTC LLC	2,930,777	$156.7M	Options market-maker	Dealer
9	JPMorgan	2,622,817	$138.2M	Steady	Wealth-channel
10	Raymond James	2,574,790	$137.7M	Growing	Accumulating

Read: Jane Street's Q4-2025 move (41K → 20.6M shares, a ~500× increase that made it the largest reported holder ahead of BlackRock's 20.5M and Morgan Stanley's 18.1M at the time) was the manipulation flag; more than 87% of its reported book is options-linked, so the SLV shares were a delta hedge against short puts and long calls sold to the public during the silver run to $75+ and $125. By Q2-2026 it held 6.68M — two-thirds unwound into the first leg of the decline. Citadel and Susquehanna showed the same pattern. The dealer distribution is two quarters old; the Q2 book is wealth-channel (MS/UBS/BofA/LPL/WFC/JPM/RJF ≈ 51M shares, ~60% of the top-10), which is sticky retail money. Fund-level: SLV net creations +17M shares since June into a −54% drawdown — the public bought the dip the dealers sold. The Q3 13F (Nov 14) shows whether Jane Street re-hedged into the September $57 breakdown; a rebuild toward 15M+ is the signal that dealers are again short puts into retail. Futures: silver COT (Oct 13) large spec net long 22,631, commercial net short 39,442 (+2,150) on rising OI — the futures market has the shorts the ETF market lacks, and that is trade 3.

GLD — SPDR Gold Shares

AUM in the ~$140B class (peaked above $141B in December 2025 at the $4,300 record; gold is 2.7% below that record at $4,183 while tonnage is modestly lower after Q1 profit-taking). Top holders (Q2 2026): BlackRock Fund Advisors, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, JPMorgan, UBS, Goldman — the same wealth-channel set as SLV — plus Bridgewater (long-standing core) and the Saudi and Qatari sovereign vehicles via custodians. Official sector (WGC): the GLD metric is whether central-bank buying stays above ~50 tonnes a month; September's run-rate was consistent with that — Poland, Brazil, Serbia and the Gulf central banks are the stated buyers; the PBoC reports continuing monthly additions and the CBR is a net accumulator while sanctions are waived rather than tightened. The Graham waiver is a GLD input: every reserve manager who watched a signed US sanctions law suspended for diesel just learned that dollar sanctions are negotiable — which is the argument for holding gold instead. Signal: GLD creations flat-to-positive in October while silver creations outran price — the gold bid is official-sector, the silver bid is retail. Friday NAVs not published at compile.

BTC ETFs — IBIT / FBTC / GBTC

Fund	Oct 16 (Fri, final)	Week Oct 12–16	Oct MTD / context	Read
IBIT (BlackRock)	−$71.8M	−$165.4M	bulk of −$614.9M	87% of Friday's outflow and 72% of the week's. The marginal institutional seller is the IBIT holder — the 2024–25 cost basis is $60–75K, so this is profit protection into a hiking Fed, not capitulation.
FBTC (Fidelity)	−$10.6M	−$60.2M	negative	Fidelity's advisor channel de-risking steadily — the retail-advisor book.
GBTC + BTC mini (Grayscale)	$0	−$7.6M (mini)	~flat	Grayscale's seller is exhausted; GBTC's fee-driven outflow of 2024–25 has ended.
BITB / ARKB / HODL / MSBT	$0	+$2.2M / 0 / 0 / +$6.7M	~flat	Nine funds at zero on a Friday: no price-insensitive bid, no forced seller.
Total	−$82.4M	−$228.4M	−$614.9M · YTD +$315.5M · since launch ~$56.9B · AUM $104.3B · 1.276M BTC	2026 YTD net demand is a rounding error on a $104B book; the funds shed >10,000 BTC in two weeks. ETH ETFs: wk −$320.1M (ETHA −$299M, FETH +$10.5M). All crypto ETPs −$610.7M (prior −$1.286B).

13F read (Q2 2026, carried): Hedge funds (Millennium, Jane Street, Citadel, Susquehanna) hold IBIT/FBTC primarily as basis-trade hedges against CME futures; the Q2 filings showed basis positions cut as the CME basis compressed toward cash. Wealth channels (Morgan Stanley, Goldman PWM, UBS) were net adders in Q2. State pensions (Wisconsin, Michigan) steady. Strategy (MSTR) is the index-mechanics seller from Nov 11 (MSCI exclusion of "non-operating companies"; effective after the Nov 30 close) — the only forced flow on the calendar, and it is a seller. PBoC / CBR gold: both report continuing additions; the CBR's incentive to accumulate rose Friday — a sanctions regime that can be waived for diesel is one that can be re-imposed after Nov 3.

KMilitary Force Analysis & Market Impact — Iran War Day 234

K1) Force comparison dashboard

US forces in / en route to CENTCOM

Carriers — two on station: USS George Washington (CVN-73, CVW-5 with F-35C) and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77, CSG-10, CVW-7) — both Arabian Sea; Bush went AIS-dark after leaving Phuket Oct 9 and DVIDS imagery places it back in 5th Fleet; DDG Mason last tracked in the Malacca Strait rejoining. Third carrier: USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71, CSG-9: CVW-11, CG Chosin, DDGs Decatur; Paul Hamilton at Pearl Harbor Oct 15; Carl M. Levin undisclosed) arrived Yokosuka Oct 16 and participates in Keen Sword 27 (Oct 19–29) before any Arabian Sea transit — the late-October arrival in theatre is now November. Abraham Lincoln home at San Diego (Oct 8) after ~10 months. ARGs: Boxer + 11th MEU (F-35B flying; Arabian Sea since March); Makin Island + 13th MEU deployed with Roosevelt. Surge total 9,000 (AP) to 20,000+ (US official) sailors/Marines. Independent deployers: Milius, John Paul Jones, Rafael Peralta, John Finn, ESB Miguel Keith; Red Sea: Jason Dunham, Gonzalez. Air: USAF tanker sorties +~50% in the first 14 days of October vs September's daily rate; transports similar (IntelSky, unverified); F-15E/KC-135 imagery released by CENTCOM. Blockade: 138 commercial vessels redirected (CENTCOM, Oct 18; 130 as of Oct 5); $25B Iranian crude blocked; ~$350M crypto frozen; threat level for merchant shipping "severe". Strike options: GBU-43/B MOAB plans prepared (CBS/ABC/CNN); Trump: intensified strikes after Nov 3 "possible", MOAB "not nuclear; simply a very large bomb"; nuclear talks involving Russia and China "possible". Casualties: DoD 21 KIA / 865 WIA (carried; none new this weekend). Allies: France deploying to Saudi Arabia; Macron in the Gulf Oct 19–21; Egypt's Sisi seeking parliamentary authority to defend Saudi Arabia "if requested"; Keen Sword 27 with Japan; 22-nation safe-passage statement. Cost: $113.3B through June (CRS); desk run-rate ~$450–550M/day including munitions replacement and interceptor burn; FY26 $87.6B supplemental unenacted; CRS: 81 aircraft lost/damaged ($1.9–3.3B).

Iran & proxies

Weekend strait: IRGC claims two tankers (~2M bbl each) struck mines on an "unauthorised" route with AIS/radar off Oct 17–18; both burned, one immobilised — unnamed, unverified; CENTCOM says the lane is cleared of mines. Sunday 4am: a tug off the UAE hit by two unknown projectiles, one minor casualty, continued on route. Saturday: tanker hit by an unknown projectile 68nm NE of Al Jubayl (crew evacuated); second tanker hit by an RPG from a small boat ~78nm NE of Jubail — new weapon, new geography (northern Gulf, inside the convoy's operating area). UKMTO: 10+ vessels attacked since last Sunday (record week), 23 in October (~2× average), one sinking (GFS Pride), "most ships now refuse to report"; UKMTO transits ~36/day vs CENTCOM's ~57/day claim. ISW: 24 vessels targeted in two weeks; Iranian naval forces using small boats and spotters after radar damage. Kpler: Hormuz 11.62 mb/d (68% of baseline); Iranian crude exports zero in September; Reuters: 8 tankers / 4.1M bbl Iranian LPG out of the Gulf of Oman — the product channel leaks. Posture: new DefMin Mehrdad Akhlaghi: "enormous damage" if the US resumes attacks; IRGC deputy Izadi: "ready to carry out the most powerful operations"; IRGC spokesman Mohibi: a new war "would be irrational" but "absolutely" possible; army chief Hatami: proportional strikes on Israeli and allied targets; Rezaei: US data centres and AI infrastructure "within range"; army spokesman Akraminia: strait reopens if the US "leaves the region", otherwise "we will expel it". Diplomacy: Araghchi (Baghdad, OIC): reopen day six, talks day seven, on lifting the blockade, oil sanctions and all-front ceasefire incl. Lebanon; Iran "still reviewing" US comments on the September text; Pezeshkian: not seeking nuclear weapons, ready for dialogue. Israel's Channel 12: "new and unusual military movements" detected inside Iran. Houthis: Riyadh "hostile aerial threat" alert early Sunday (2 ballistic missiles at Khamis Mushait + drone at Riyadh intercepted); Najran residential hit (6 injured); Saudi AH-6i crashed in Najran (2 pilots killed; coalition says malfunction, Houthis claim a shoot-down); Kingdom Centre (99 storeys) tenants told to work remotely; Bab el-Mandeb closed to Saudi-flagged tankers; Yanbu missile intercepted Friday; Aden palace (5 killed) and airport hit; Saudi strikes killed 9–12 in Yemen Sat–Sun; Houthis released 159 prisoners. Iraq: $60B war cost, exports 2.6 vs 3.5 mb/d, reserves −$20B.

Key asymmetries

US advantages: two carriers + an F-35B ARG on station, air superiority over the Gulf, a blockade that has zeroed Iranian seaborne crude, the ability to escort ~400 transits/week by its own count, and MOAB-class munitions already staged. Iranian advantages: geography (the attacks have moved 70+nm inside the Gulf, beyond the escort lane), cheap weapons the convoy system cannot address (small boats, RPGs, drifting mines, spotters), a product-export leak (LPG) that funds the regime, proxy depth (Houthis closing Bab el-Mandeb to Saudi hulls; Hezbollah on readiness with seized explosives in Lebanese custody), and — new this weekend — a US President visibly trading sanctions for fuel prices, which Tehran reads as a ceiling on escalation before Nov 3. Net: the US controls the water; Iran controls the insurance premium. 68% flows is the equilibrium neither side can move before the midterms.

Key developments, last 24–48h

• Trump waives the Graham Russia–Iran Act (Fri night) — Russia sanctions suspended for diesel; the Act's Iran provisions are untouched but the signal is read in Tehran as price-sensitivity. • IRGC's second claimed tanker mine strike (Sat–Sun). • Tug attacked off the UAE (Sun 4am). • Vance: Iran must stop enrichment first (Sun). • Araghchi restates the six-day/seven-day framework at the OIC (Sat–Sun); Yemen's FM rejects Iranian mediation. • Trump endorses Netanyahu; Netanyahu: partnership will "eliminate the Iranian threat" within two years. • Roosevelt CSG in Yokosuka for Keen Sword, not the Arabian Sea. • Saudi AH-6i lost; Riyadh alert; Kingdom Centre WFH. • Russia: 320 drones on Ukraine's grid in 12 hours; Oct 12 energy ceasefire dead by Oct 15; Ukrainian strikes on a Russian refinery and the St Petersburg export terminal; Romanian F-16s down two drones in NATO waters. • Polymarket ceasefire-through-midterms 78% → 81%.

K2) Stock market war impact

Beneficiaries

Energy (XLE wk +4.9%; XOM/CVX +2.5% Fri), complex refiners (distillate crack at record width — VLO Thu), oilfield services (HAL Tue, SLB Fri), product tankers (Baltic Clean Tanker Index +3%), defence (Rheinmetall +5.3% Fri; RTX/NOC Tue, LMT Thu, GE Tue), cybersecurity (Rezaei's data-centre threat), gold miners (NEM Thu at $4,183), staples with pricing power (XLP +5.0%), and — after Friday's waiver — anything in the Russian-crude arbitrage (Indian refiners, shadow-fleet tonnage).

Sufferers

Airlines (UAL Tue, AAL Thu, LUV Wed — jet fuel at $108 Brent, Gulf hubs impaired, Kingdom Centre WFH), cruise/travel, Korean and Taiwanese semis (KOSPI −40%; Keen Sword/Taiwan tail), AI-infrastructure credit (CRWV −25% wk; power and capex costs up; Rezaei's threat), consumer discretionary at $4.33 gasoline and 46.3 sentiment, European chemicals and industrials at 3.8% HICP and 67% gas storage, EM importers (Indonesia worst day since 1998 Thu; Turkey −3%), and long-duration Treasuries while the war is deficit-financed.

Historical pattern & current drawdown

Gulf War 1990–91: S&P −16% from the August invasion to the October low, +25% in the three months after the air campaign began. Iraq 2003: −14% into the March start, +30% by year-end. Libya 2011: −6% in two weeks, recovered in six. 2026: the S&P is −2.0% from the Oct 6 record and roughly flat to its Feb 27 pre-war level after a full round trip — the index absorbed the war; the sectors did not (energy +40%, semis −30% from peak, airlines −35%). The war-drawdown template says buy the start of the air campaign; this war's second air campaign has a date range (after Nov 3) and a weapon (MOAB) already announced, which is why the put spread (trade 6) runs to Oct 30, not Nov 30.

Defence tracker

LMT −25% from its 2026 high ($400 area is the add zone; reports Thu) · RTX reports Tue — the Patriot/interceptor backlog read · NOC reports Tue — B-21/missile defence · GD steady on munitions · BA avoid (commercial-aero fuel) · HII the shipbuilding leg · Rheinmetall +5.3% Fri (DAX leader) · BAE/Leonardo bid on France's Saudi deployment. S&P 1500 A&D −19% from the August high — the gap to the European primes is the trade. China/Russia defence-industrial: AVIC/CSSC/Norinco-linked names in HK/Shenzhen led Shanghai's fragile rebound (SSE 3,716, defence stocks leading per BBN) — the Beijing posture read is "arm, don't engage".

K3) Treasury yield-spike indicators — traffic light dashboard

#	Indicator	Status	Reading
1	War spending fiscal blowout	AMBER	$113.3B through June; desk run-rate ~$450–550M/day (~$40–50B/qtr unbudgeted — at the $50B RED threshold); FY26 $87.6B supplemental unenacted; FY26 deficit $2.0T (+12%). A confirmed mine or a Yanbu strike makes the supplemental urgent → RED.
2	CPI re-acceleration	RED	September headline +0.6% m/m (3.7% y/y) with energy +5.2% m/m and gasoline +9.1% — above the +0.4% energy-driven trigger. PPI +1.3% m/m, import prices +8.1% y/y. Cleveland October nowcast ~+0.3% (would downgrade to AMBER Nov 10).
3	Term premium expansion	AMBER	ACM 10Y term premium elevated and rising since September (30Y 5.43% with 2Y 4.74% = 69bp 2s30s); last week's rally was front-end-led (October-hike odds collapsing), leaving the premium intact. The 20Y auction Wednesday is the test.
4	Treasury auction demand	AMBER	No coupon auction since the rally; 20Y $13B Wed 1pm, 5Y TIPS Thu. TIC shows the marginal foreign bid is private/leveraged (UK, Canada, Belgium), which demands concession. A tail >2bp with indirects <60% → RED.
5	Foreign holder selling	RED	TIC August (Oct 16): Japan −$35.6B to $1.068T (4th straight, lowest since Dec 2024, intervention finance); China −$27.3B to $590.7B (3rd straight, 18-year low, −16% y/y). Offset by UK +$11.2B (record $1.009T), Canada +$38.3B, Belgium +$19.8B — custodial money. Russia nil. Official-sector net sellers two months running.
6	Fed rhetoric shift	GREEN	The Fed hiked into this (Sep 16) and the last words before blackout were hawkish (Hammack "more restraint", Williams "one more in 2026"). No tolerance signal. Blackout until Oct 28 — the risk is a dovish surprise statement, not rhetoric.
7	Fiscal deficit trajectory	RED	FY26 deficit $2.0T (+12% y/y), net interest ~$1.1T, war supplemental pending, a sanctions law suspended for pre-election fuel prices — the fiscal reaction function is election-dated. CBO's path has no consolidation before FY28.
8	Credit rating watch	AMBER	No new US action. Moody's reviews France Friday (Aa3 neg) — a European sovereign downgrade in auction week reprices the basis trade globally. US ingredients (deficit, interest, foreign selling, policy volatility) are all present; a surprise outlook change is the RED.
9	2s10s steepening	AMBER	+34–37bp from +32 — but Friday's steepening was a bull-steepener (2Y down more) and the week a bull-flattener; bear-steepening (long end up faster) was the Oct 7 configuration. >+44bp with the 10Y rising → RED.
10	MOVE Index	GREEN	102.5 (Thu) — bond vol fell as rates rallied; well below the 120 RED line. The auction and the Oct 27–29 cluster are the catalysts; MOVE >115 is the early warning.

SUMMARY: AMBER — 3 RED (CPI, foreign selling, fiscal) + 5 AMBER + 2 GREEN. Unchanged from Friday. One 20Y tail Wednesday flips #4 and #9 to RED and makes it 5 → RED (yield spike imminent). Last week's rally changed the level (5.33% → 5.08%), not the structure: the sellers are official, the buyers are leveraged, the deficit is election-dated, and the inflation print is energy-led. Trade 2 is built for exactly this: own the auction, hedge the structure.

K4) Commodity war premium

Brent war premium

~$35.5

$108.02 (Mon Asia) vs $72.48 pre-war (Feb 27) — premium off ~$2 from Friday's $37 on the Araghchi restatement and the Russian diesel licence. Hormuz: 11.62 mb/d vs 17.15 baseline (Kpler, wk to Oct 13) = 5.5 mb/d short; UKMTO ~36 transits/day vs CENTCOM ~57. Dated Brent ~$130 (physical tightness > futures). EIA STEO: Brent $105 Q4 average on 4.5 mb/d shut-ins. TE model $113.9 end-Q4 / $130 12-month. Emergency supply: IEA +20M bbl diesel (Oct 15), US 17M-bbl SPR exchange RFP (within the 172M US share of the IEA action), Russian diesel 4.8M tons pledged (Oct 9; nothing quantified loaded yet). ING: full premium removal requires a US–Iran agreement. Iraq: 2.6 mb/d exported Sep 1–21 vs 3.5 pre-war; $60B lost; reserves −$20B. Supply-disruption duration: market pricing ~2–3 more months (Polymarket no-deal-by-Oct-23 96%; blockade-ends-by-Mar-31 59%). Scenario: bull $115 (confirmed mine / Yanbu hit / 8M+ EIA draw), base $105–112, bear $100 (quiet Gulf, smaller draw, Russian diesel loads).

Gold & silver safe-haven analysis

Gold ~7% below 200-DMA

Gold $4,183 (+0.4% Mon): 1-month −3.7%, 1-year −4.0% — the war premium in gold was front-loaded in Q1 (the $4,300 December record pre-dates the war's second phase) and has been bleeding as real yields rose; the Graham waiver is a new structural input (sanctions credibility). Gold/Brent 38.7 (vs ~58 pre-war — oil has outrun gold by a third). G/S 72.9. Silver $57.43: industrial demand (solar, AI power electronics, EVs) intact per record term pricing; monetary demand collapsed with the −54% drawdown; COT commercials adding shorts (+2,150) on rising OI is the contrarian flag. Central banks (WGC): ~50t/month official buying run-rate; PBoC continuing monthly additions; CBR a net accumulator; Poland, Brazil, Serbia, Gulf CBs stated buyers. Levels: gold $4,040 / $4,073 / $4,195 / $4,300; silver $54.50 / $58.50 / $60 / $62–64.

Energy infrastructure damage tracker

Hit / offline: South Pars (Mar 18–19, partially restored); Ras Laffan (Mar 19; Qatar LNG trains cycling); Iranian export terminals under blockade (Kharg idle — seaborne crude zero); Iraq southern exports −0.9 mb/d vs pre-war; Russian refineries (Ukrainian strikes Oct 16 — a major unit shut; St Petersburg export terminal hit); Saudi Yanbu targeted (intercepted Fri). Threatened: Yanbu, Ras Tanura, Jubail petrochemicals (attacks now 70nm NE of Al Jubayl), Qatar LNG, UAE Fujairah (tug hit Sunday). Barrels offline: ~4.5–5.5 mb/d (EIA 4.5 assumption; Kpler 5.5 flow gap). Repair timelines: South Pars months; Ras Laffan trains weeks per train; Iraq pipeline/berth repairs weeks; insurance the binding constraint (VLCC war-risk up to $10M/transit). Europe gas storage 67% vs 80% norm with a Russian second front now less sanctioned, not more.

K5) War impact on Bitcoin & crypto

Escalation vs de-escalation phases

Feb 28 strikes: BTC −12% in a week (risk-off). April ceasefire: +18% in two weeks. June Islamabad MOU: +9%, ATH chase failed below $100K. July collapse: −15%. September rejection: −8% to the $80K band. October: flat in a $2,000 band on record UKMTO attack weeks and an 81% ceasefire contract — the war has stopped being a crypto factor; the Fed and ETF flows are.

Correlation: SPX vs gold

Conflict-period correlation to the Nasdaq ~0.5 (down from 0.7 in 2025), to gold ~0.1. Last week: Nasdaq −4.5%, gold −0.7%, BTC −2.6% — a third of the Nasdaq's beta, none of gold's resilience. The weekend's test (mines, Riyadh alert, Graham waiver) produced BTC −1.0% vs gold +0.4%. Verdict: not digital gold; a de-beta'd risk asset. Decoupling from equities is happening because the position is small, not because the asset is defensive.

Sanctions evasion & stablecoins

CENTCOM: ~$350M Iran-linked crypto frozen. Iran's LPG channel (8 tankers / 4.1M bbl) is the fiat leak; USDT on Tron (+$555M cap in a week) is the rail market talk assigns to Gulf/Russia/Iran settlement. Global stablecoin supply −$1.35B w/w to $305.2B (USDT ~$183B, USDC ~$73B) — contraction, not capital flight into dollars-on-chain. Russia's USDT oil-settlement pilots lose urgency the day a US licence covers Russian diesel — the waiver is bearish the "crypto-as-sanctions-rail" thesis and bullish the "dollar system is negotiable" thesis for gold.

Mining, DeFi, history

Hash rate near record; Henry Hub $3.05 keeps US mining margins intact (gas at a domestic discount while the world pays +96% y/y). DeFi TVL $122.25B (−$1.34B w/w); $6.72B in loans within 5% of liquidation — a $79.4K break cascades. Historical: Russia–Ukraine 2022 — −15% in two weeks, +25% rally into March, then −60% with the Fed. The 2026 shape is identical at lower amplitude: wars are two-week factors in crypto; rates are two-year factors.

LGeopolitical Escalation / De-escalation Probability Tracker

Ceasefire holds through the midterms (Nov 3)

Polymarket 81% · desk 70%

Market +3 (vol $624K from $530K) · desk +2 (from 68%)

Signals to watch: Macron's Gulf tour Oct 19–21 (French-brokered "UNCLOS corridor" text is the EU ask ahead of the EU–GCC summit in Riyadh Oct 24); the Iranian reply to US "comments" on the September text (Araghchi: "still reviewing"); Pakistan's Munir channel; a week with Kpler flows above 13 mb/d; IRGC payroll resumed; a US licence for Iranian LPG (the Graham template). Why desk is below market: the market priced a restated offer Washington rejected on Sept 26 and now conditions on enrichment (Vance, Sunday); the tape — two claimed mine strikes, a tug hit off the UAE, UKMTO's record week, a Saudi helicopter down, Kingdom Centre evacuated — is a campaign widening in geography and narrowing in visibility. Why desk moved up: a President who suspends a 86–11 sanctions law for diesel 17 days before an election is not ordering a MOAB strike before it. The shorter tenors (Oct 24: 91%, Nov 8: 69%) price ~1.3%/day of decay — the market expects fraying, not breaking.

US strikes on Iranian territory

Before Nov 3: 24% · by Dec 31: 45%

Pre-midterm −3 (Graham waiver) · post-midterm unch

Triggers to monitor: a US-flagged or US-crewed vessel hit (the RPG attacks off Jubail and Sunday's tug off the UAE are inside the convoy's operating area); a mass-casualty Houthi strike on a Gulf airport or US base; independent confirmation of mines in the convoy lane (the IRGC now claims two VLCCs); a Hezbollah attack with the seized explosives returned; the Roosevelt's eventual Arabian Sea arrival (November, after Keen Sword); a MOAB strike order (plans prepared; Trump: post-Nov 3 "possible"); the Israeli election Oct 27 (Trump endorsed Netanyahu Sunday; Netanyahu: "eliminate the Iranian threat" within two years; Eisenkot 54% on Polymarket). Polymarket: US invades Iran before 2027 — No 85%; Hormuz agreement by Oct 31: 7%; US announces end of blockade by Mar 31: 59%.

Diplomatic channels

Pakistan remains the primary mediator (Islamabad venue; the June MOU was signed there; Munir central); Ghalibaf's seven conditions "based on the Islamabad memorandum" are Tehran's text. France: Macron in UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar Oct 19–21 — freedom of navigation, energy, defence/AI; France deploying to Saudi Arabia; the EU–GCC summit in Riyadh Oct 24 is the venue for a corridor text. Egypt: Sisi seeking parliamentary authority to defend Saudi Arabia — a new Arab military vertex. Iraq/OIC: Araghchi met Fidan and Egyptian, Libyan, Lebanese and Algerian FMs in Baghdad; offered Yemen mediation; Yemen's FM: Iran "is a party to the war". Qatar: conveyed the September text; funds Lebanon reconstruction; the Hezbollah-disarmament track runs through Doha and Beirut. Russia: rewarded Friday (Graham waiver) and positioned as US–Iran mediator; Trump says nuclear talks "involving Russia and China" are possible; Moscow's revealed posture — 320 drones on Ukraine's grid, a refinery war with Kyiv, a collapsed energy ceasefire — says it will take the concession and give nothing. China: involved per the White House; the one vertex with leverage on both Tehran and the oil price; its revealed posture is Treasury selling (18-year low), Russian crude buying (now un-sanctioned) and defence-stock leadership in Shanghai; Q3 GDP tonight. UNSC: blocked (Russia/China vetoed the April force resolution). Back-channels: Witkoff/Kushner/Vance for the US (Vance: enrichment first), Araghchi/Ghalibaf for Iran. Third-party material intervention (China or Russia moving from diplomatic to material support — arms, convoy, sanctions breach): 15% by year-end, down from 18% — the waiver reduces Moscow's incentive to escalate materially and Beijing's revealed posture is to profit, not fight. If it happens: long oil and gold, short duration and semis, long defence and rare earths (MP, Lynas).
