A Executive Summary — the Big Picture

⚠ Weekend read — what changed between Friday's close and Sunday. No US data printed; the Fed is silent; equity and bond markets are closed. What moved is the war's shape. Saturday produced three facts the Friday close did not have: (1) the IRGC says a supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels struck a mine on an "unauthorised" route and caught fire — unverified, unnamed, but the first claimed VLCC-class casualty of the Hormuz campaign; (2) UKMTO logged two tanker hits 68–78 nautical miles northeast of Al Jubayl, Saudi Arabia — deep inside the Gulf, far from the strait, one by a rocket-propelled grenade from a small boat, a weapon and a geography the convoy system was not built for; (3) UKMTO's weekly tally (10+ vessels, the most since February; 23 in October, almost double the monthly average, "most ships now refuse to report") contradicts CENTCOM's "400 transits, strait controlled" framing, and UKMTO's own transit count (125 outbound / 129 inbound in seven days, ~36 a day) is a third of the US figure. Add Riyadh's "hostile aerial threat" alert early Sunday (two ballistic missiles at Khamis Mushait and a drone at Riyadh intercepted), Egypt's Sisi offering to defend Saudi Arabia "if requested," and a Reuters count of eight tankers lifting 4.1 million barrels of Iranian LPG out of the Gulf of Oman — the blockade leaks — and the weekend's net is: escalation in the shipping lane, no change in the prediction market (ceasefire-through-midterms still 78%), and a President who on Saturday called the whole thing "just a military exercise." Sunday evening's futures open is the first price.

Cycle position

Late-cycle · nominal hot / real cold

IP +0.7% and CU 76.9% (highest output since 2018) against NFP +29k, UR 4.2%, UMich 46.3 and negative real wages. GDPNow 3.6% for Q3 is inventories and nominal spend; the advance print is Oct 29, the day after the FOMC.

Dominant regime

Stagflation 48% (from 47%)

Reflation 22% · Goldilocks 7% · bust 23%. The one-point upgrade is the weekend attack tempo (record week, new weapon type, attacks inside the Gulf) with Brent already at $110 and the IEA's last 100M barrels already announced — the relief is spent, the risk is not.

"Beautiful deleveraging" status

Ugly · policy mix inconsistent

FY26 deficit $2.0T (+12%), net interest ~$1.1T, a Fed that hiked into it, and the top-two foreign creditors net sellers two months running (China $590.7B, 2008 low). Monetary restraint offset by fiscal expansion and a war premium the Fed cannot print away.

Great-power triangle

Adversarial · no vertex offers an off-ramp

Beijing sells Treasuries into a $2.0T deficit; Moscow's refinery "truce" (Trump, Oct 11) is contested by both Novak and Kyiv; Tehran's Araghchi tours Baghdad offering to mediate the Saudi–Houthi war Riyadh says Tehran is fighting. China Q3 GDP Monday is the only scheduled vertex event.

Prediction-market snapshot (Sat)

Ceasefire thru Nov 3: 78%

Through Oct 24: 86% · Oct 22: 90% · Oct 18: 93%. Fed Oct hold 87%. "Fed ≥4.5% end-2026" 16% (−11 on the week). BTC $90K in 2026: 54% (−5). Netanyahu out by end-2026: 40%; next PM Eisenkot 50% / Netanyahu 30%.

Desk vs market

Desk ceasefire 68% (from 70%)

Ten points below Polymarket. The gap is the Saturday tape: a claimed VLCC mine strike, RPG attacks inside the Gulf, UKMTO's record week and a Sunday Riyadh alert are not the signature of a regime gliding to a deal. US pre-midterm strike probability held at 27%; post-midterm strike by Dec 31 raised to 45%.

Where we are

The week that ended Friday delivered the complete stagflation data set — CPI 3.7% (+0.6% m/m), PPI 6.3% (+1.3%), import prices 8.1% (+1.1%), export prices 11.6% — alongside a labour market adding 29k jobs and an equity market that split along the only line that now matters: AI-capex balance sheets versus everything else (Nasdaq −4.5% on the week, SOXX nine days down, CoreWeave −25%, Korea −40% from its June peak) while health care, energy and the equal-weight index held. The Fed, having hiked once in September to 3.75–4.00%, is now silent until Oct 28 with the market at 87% hold / 14% hike for October and 74–79% for a December hike. Real policy rates are roughly zero against headline inflation and ~1.3% against core — restrictive enough to break the most levered corner of the equity market but not the price level, which is set in the Strait of Hormuz and on the fiscal ledger. This is late-cycle in the Dalio sense: the credit being withdrawn is from the marginal borrower (AI infrastructure debt at 15% yields), the spending not being withdrawn is sovereign ($2.0T deficit, war supplemental pending), and the asset repricing fastest is the long bond's foreign ownership, not yet its yield.

The dominant macro regime

Stagflation vector 48% (from 47%). The weekend upgrade rests on the shipping lane, not the data. Three things happened between Friday's $110 Brent print and Sunday: the IRGC claimed its first supertanker casualty; UKMTO confirmed attacks have moved from the strait approaches to the northern Gulf off Saudi Arabia's largest petrochemical port (Al Jubayl), using small-boat RPG fire that no convoy escort stops; and UKMTO's weekly count hit the highest since the war's first month with the admission that most victims no longer report. The oil market has priced the IEA's final 100M barrels and the shadow-fleet sanctions relief; it has not priced a war that is spreading geographically while shrinking in the headline count because the counting agency has lost visibility. Against that: the bond market's week (10Y −13bp through three hot inflation prints) says investors believe the energy shock is demand-destroying — IEA 2026 demand −2.6 mb/d, Iraq's own exports 2.6 mb/d versus 3.5 pre-war — and that the Fed will not chase it. Both are true at once: nominal growth stays high, real growth stays flat, the curve bull-steepens from the front as the terminal rate is capped, and the long end remains hostage to supply (20Y Wednesday) and foreign flows (TIC: China at a 2008 low) rather than to the Fed. The reflation path (22%) requires a Chinese Q3 beat on Monday and a Hormuz framework out of Macron's Gulf tour; the bust path (23%) requires the AI-credit layer to produce a default rather than a drawdown — Meta and Tesla guide capex on Wednesday; Goldilocks (7%) requires October gasoline to subtract from CPI and Brent to fall — the weekend removed the second condition again.

Risks vs opportunities

Risk: Sunday evening's futures open prices the weekend's shipping tape into a market that closed with VIX at 19.99 (intraday 22.31, highest since June), the S&P below its 50-day, the VIX futures curve inverted and no Fed speaker for ten more days; a Brent gap above $112 with the 10Y back through 5.19% is the path on which Wednesday's 20Y auction becomes the event. Risk: the AI-credit repricing has moved from a single name to a cohort during the week Meta and Tesla guide capex (Oct 21) — a capex cut is a credit event for the vendor chain (CoreWeave, Nebius, SOXX), a capex raise is an equity event for the buyer. Opportunity: the rotation is early — health care and energy are the only sectors with both earnings momentum and positive flows; the stagflation pair (XLV/XLE vs SOXX/IGV) paid six sessions out of seven last week and the weekend tape favours the long leg. Opportunity: silver's washout is intact — the Oct 13 COT shows large-spec net long down to 22,631 contracts, commercials adding shorts into a −54% drawdown with open interest rising (fresh shorts, not long liquidation), spot $56.87, G/S ~73; gold is ~7.5% below its 200-DMA with central banks still buying and the dollar having just posted its first weekly loss in four.

What the market is not pricing

(1) A geographically widening shipping war with a shrinking official count. UKMTO says most ships now refuse to report; its transit count (~36/day) is a third of CENTCOM's; attacks are now 68–78nm inside the Gulf off Al Jubayl. The prediction market at 78% is pricing the headline count, not the reporting collapse. (2) The blockade leaks and the leak is priced as a deal signal. Eight tankers lifting 4.1M barrels of Iranian LPG while Kpler shows crude exports at zero means Tehran has found a product channel; a regime finding liquidity can afford to wait, which cuts against the "lunge" thesis and lowers near-term strike odds while raising the duration of the war premium — the market prices neither. (3) A December hike that is also the last is priced; a December hike with a January follow-up is not — Polymarket's "Fed ≥4.5% at end-2026" collapsed from 27% to 16% in one week on Warsh saying nothing, while import and export prices run 8–12% y/y and the 2Y at 4.72% assumes terminal ~4.25%. (4) Oct 27 is two elections, not one: Israel votes the day the FOMC convenes, with both blocs short of 61 in every poll and Netanyahu's own bloc split on Haredi conscription; a caretaker Israel with a pre-emptive-strike incentive is a war input the Fed meeting will not price.

C Cross-Asset Analysis — Druckenmiller lens

Bonds vs equities

The bond market spent the week saying the energy shock is demand destruction and the Fed is nearly done (10Y −13bp through CPI, PPI and import prices; 2Y −5bp less; "Fed ≥4.5% at end-2026" from 27% to 16%). The equity market spent the week saying the same thing in a more painful register: the cohort that borrows at the long end to build AI capacity (CoreWeave 2032s at 15%, Nebius, SOXX nine down, KOSPI −40% from peak) was sold while cash-generative defensives and energy were bought. These agree. The disagreement is between both of them and the oil market, which closed at $110 Brent with the IEA release announced and the attack tempo at a record — and the weekend made the oil market's case. Sunday evening will tell us which market has to move: if Brent gaps and the 10Y follows it up (bear-steepener), equities reprice both inputs at once; if Brent gaps and the 10Y rallies (growth-fear bid), the rotation extends and the long bond rally gets its third week. The 20Y auction Wednesday adjudicates.

Risk assets vs safe havens

The divergence of the moment is inside the safe-haven complex, not between it and risk. Gold held the week (−0.1%, recovered a $4,073 low) while silver fell 4.4% and BTC did nothing (+0.6%) on a Nasdaq −4.5% week. Gold is trading as the central-bank/geopolitical asset, silver as a Korean-margin-call industrial metal, Bitcoin as a dollar-liquidity instrument with no marginal buyer (ETF Oct MTD −$615M, YTD only +$315M) and no marginal seller left (Friday's ETF outflow was the smallest "real" number of the week). The weekend's escalation is a direct test: if gold opens up and BTC does not, the "digital gold" bid is confirmed absent for this conflict and the K5 verdict stands; if BTC catches a bid without an ETF print, it is the weekend-liquidity illusion that fades by Monday's US open.

Liquidity conditions

Contracting at the margin, with the contraction coming from three directions at once: official (Fed hiked in September, QT ongoing, blackout), foreign (China and Japan net sellers of Treasuries for two months; China at a 2008 low; the UK/Canada absorption is levered basis-trade and custodial flow that steps back when MOVE rises), and private (AI-infrastructure credit repricing; Goldman prime desk reports hedge funds selling AI at the second-fastest pace in a year; Korea's foreigners sold eight straight sessions before Friday). The offsets: the dollar's first weekly loss in four, G7 bonds' best week since May, and a fiscal impulse ($2.0T deficit, war supplemental pending) that is liquidity for the economy and a tax on the long end. Net: global liquidity is contracting for risk assets priced off the long end and expanding for nominal-GDP-linked assets (energy, defence, value, equal-weight). That is the whole rotation in one sentence.

Dollar implications

DXY 101.78, first weekly loss in four, from an 18-month high of 102.94 on Wednesday; speculative long still building (COT +908). The dollar fell because Warsh refused to deliver October — not because the US lost its rate advantage (2Y 4.72% vs Bund 2Y ~2.5%; Japan's 10Y below 2%). The weekend's escalation is dollar-positive via the oil-importer channel (Japan, Korea, India, Europe pay $110 Brent in dollars) and dollar-negative via the Fed-peak channel (energy demand destruction caps the terminal rate). The first dominates on a gap day; the second on a drift. For assets: a DXY above 102.3 on Monday is the signal that the gap channel won — silver, EM equities and BTC lose; below 101.6 and the Fed-peak channel won — gold, duration and EM bonds gain. The 101.6–102.3 range is where the dashboard says nothing, and that is where the week will likely open.

Implications: bear-steepener (10Y 5.30–5.45%), SPX 7,800+ led by semis squeeze and cyclicals, Brent $95–100 (premium decays), gold flat, silver +8% (industrial), BTC +10% (dollar down, risk up), DXY <101.

Rising growth + falling inflation — Goldilocks

Probability 7% (unchanged)

Path: October gasoline subtracts from CPI (AAA $4.33 vs $4.37 a month ago), Brent <$100 on a de-escalation, Q3 GDP 3%+ on inventories. Implications: bull-flattener, 10Y <4.95%, Nasdaq leads a reversal of the rotation, VIX <16, gold −3%, BTC +15% (the only quadrant where BTC outperforms gold). The weekend's tape removed the oil condition again.

Falling growth + rising inflation — Stagflation ◀ current & trending

Probability 48% (from 47%)

Path: the shipping war widens (Al Jubayl, RPGs, a VLCC), Brent $110–120, import prices 8%+, NFP ~0, real wages negative, Fed holds October and hikes December into a slowing economy. Implications: 10Y 5.00–5.35% range with the long end hostage to the 20Y/30Y auctions, SPX 7,400–7,700 with the rotation (XLV/XLE/equal-weight over SOXX/IGV) extending, Brent/gold/defence up, silver mixed (monetary bid vs industrial), BTC $77–84K range, DXY 101–103.

Falling growth + falling inflation — Bust / deflationary shock

Probability 23% (unchanged)

Path: the AI-credit layer produces a default (CoreWeave-class), Meta/Tesla cut capex, Korea's margin cascade reaches US prime brokers, Brent breaks on demand destruction. Implications: bull-steepener then bull-flattener, 10Y <4.90% fast, SPX 7,200 (Oct 30 7,500/7,200 put spread pays), VIX 30+, gold initially sold with everything then bid, silver −10%, BTC −10% to $73K (liquidity asset first), DXY spike >104, defence/energy outperform on a relative basis only.

Quadrant map: we are in the lower-right (stagflation) and the weekend moved us further into it along the inflation axis via the oil channel, not along the growth axis. The two exits are symmetric in probability (reflation 22% / bust 23%) and opposite in every asset — which is why the conviction book in G is a rotation-and-vol book, not a directional index book.

E Sector & Theme Spotlight

1. Energy, refiners and the distillate crack — momentum confirmed by the weekend

XLE +2.5% Friday (the day's best sector), Exxon +2.5%, Chevron +2.6%, FTSE 100 at a seven-week high on energy weight, Brent at $110 with dated Brent ~$130 and European diesel 2× YTD. The weekend added RPG attacks off Al Jubayl (Saudi Arabia's petrochemical hub) and a claimed VLCC loss. Valero (Thu) and SLB (Fri) report this week; the refiner trade is a logistics problem the SPR cannot solve. Risk: a formal shadow-fleet sanctions easing plus a Hormuz text out of Macron's tour.

2. Defence — Rheinmetall showed what the US primes have not priced

Rheinmetall +5.3% led the DAX Friday; the S&P 1500 A&D index is −19% from its August high and LMT −25% from its 2026 high on a midterm/budget narrative while the materiel bill (81 aircraft lost/damaged at $1.9–3.3B, SM-3 replenishment $6.3B, $87.6B supplemental unenacted) is bipartisan and unspent. RTX and NOC report Tuesday before the open, GE Aerospace Tuesday, LMT and HON Thursday. The ceasefire's 78% is in the price; the replenishment is not. Pair against airlines (UAL Tue after the close, AAL Thu) for a war-neutral expression — jet fuel at $110 Brent is the airline earnings risk.

3. Health care — the new overweight with records on a down day

XLV printed an intraday record Friday on a −1.1% S&P day; RBC moved health care to overweight and tech to market weight; Visa and Mastercard also printed records. Abbott (Wed), Thermo Fisher (Wed), Elevance (Wed), Danaher (Wed), Quest (Thu) report this week; ESMO runs Oct 23–27 in Madrid. This is the Marks "second-level" read: the sector is cheap not because it is bad but because the AI trade needed funding, and the funding flow has reversed.

Contrarian — second-level thinking

Korea is the most hated market on earth and the one with the most forced sellers behind it. KOSPI −40% from the June peak, −7.57% Thursday with a circuit breaker, foreigners sellers for eight straight days (−₩3.6T Thursday alone) before Friday's +₩345.6B — the first net buy in nine sessions — with institutions and retail absorbing. The structural bull case (HBM/memory, Samsung/Hynix as the physical AI supply chain) has not changed; the price has halved. The first-level read is "AI bubble bursting"; the second-level read is that a 40% drawdown with a buy-side sidecar on day one of foreign re-entry is where the second half of a secular theme is bought. Instrument: EWY or Samsung/Hynix ADRs, sized for a further −15% and bought in thirds; stop a KOSPI close below 5,300. Nuclear/uranium equities are the second contrarian: spot U3O8 $89.9 is 10% off a 19-year record, term prices are at records, Google's Constellation PPA and the NASA–DOE space-nuclear deal are demand facts, yet the equities sold with SOXX as "AI power" proxies. The fuel is not the chip.

F Crypto Deep Dive

BTC / ETH — six days in a $2,000 band on a 2-vol Nasdaq week

BTC $81,410 Saturday morning (−0.59% 24h; mcap $1.64T; spot volume $8.7B, weekend-thin), its sixth session inside $80–82K after Thursday's $79,700 low and Friday's $82,700 high. Polymarket's Sunday-close market prices a 77% probability the close is inside $80–82K, 16% for $82–84K, 6% for $78–80K: realised vol has collapsed and the options market agrees. Week +0.6% against Nasdaq −4.5%: the 30-day BTC–Nasdaq correlation has fallen toward zero from ~0.6 in September — not because BTC is a haven, but because it has no marginal flow in either direction. ETH $2,425 (−0.8%; mcap $296B), ETH/BTC 0.0298 and still making lows; "Ether bets were wiped out at six times bitcoin's rate" in the Oct 9 $1B flush and ETH ETFs lost $542M in the week of Oct 5–9 (ETHA −$477M) — ETH remains the institutional de-risking channel. Headline risk this weekend was quantum, not macro: Google's Willow result, a "Quantum Alliance" warning that 6.4M BTC in legacy address types face a future quantum threat, and Satoshi-era coin exposure — a narrative that bites in a low-liquidity tape because it targets exactly the long-dormant supply that would otherwise never move.

Institutional flows

Friday's final ETF tally: −$82.41M, entirely IBIT (−$71.8M) and FBTC (−$10.61M) with GBTC, BTC mini, BITB, ARKB and HODL all at zero. October MTD −$614.9M; YTD +$315.5M — nine and a half months of 2026 have produced a rounding error of net demand, and the cumulative since launch (~$57.0B) is the 2024–25 inheritance. The week's pattern (+$175.7M, −$261.4M, +$5.1M, −$82.4M) is a market with neither conviction buyer nor forced seller. CoinShares' prior weekly (−$434M across crypto funds) confirmed the direction; the next CoinShares read is Monday. CME basis is flat-to-cash (no carry bid). MSCI's exclusion of "non-operating companies" — Strategy (MSTR) is the target — has a final list Nov 11 and takes effect after the Nov 30 close: that is a forced seller of MSTR equity and therefore of MSTR's marginal BTC bid, into a market with no ETF offset.

Regulatory landscape

Sanctions enforcement is now the dominant regulatory fact: CENTCOM says ~$350M of Iranian cryptocurrency has been frozen as part of the blockade; Treasury's Thursday package added Iraqi and offshore banks. Russia's Sberbank secured approval to trade crypto (Oct 14) — the mirror image: the largest sanctioned-economy bank entering the rails the US is policing. MSCI's index decision is the equity-market regulator of treasury companies. The OpenAI-agent incident (an autonomous agent that ran out of ETH and drew from a wallet it did not control) and the Ledger spy-chip exploit ($86M) are the week's custody headlines; neither moved price, both move the compliance conversation.

WAR IMPACT ON CRYPTO — Day 233 verdict: risk-proxy with the beta turned off, not digital gold

Digital gold or tech proxy? Neither, this week — BTC was a cash-like asset with a crypto wrapper. The test cases: Oct 7 (10Y 5.365% 24-yr high) BTC fell with the Nasdaq; Oct 14 (CPI 3.7%, Oct hike odds 54%) BTC −1.5% while gold −1% — both sold; Oct 15–16 (Korea crash, Nasdaq −2.1%) BTC −0.5% while gold +0.5% — BTC flat, gold bid. Since the Feb 28 war start: gold +~40% (from ~$2,950 to $4,164), BTC −~5% (from ~$85K), SPX +~25%. Over 233 days of a war that shut a fifth of global oil flows, Bitcoin is the only major asset that did not reprice the war at all — which is the definition of not being a hedge for it.

Correlation: 30-day BTC–SPX correlation ~0.1 (from ~0.6 in September); BTC–gold ~0. BTC is decoupling from equities during this stress episode by going nowhere, not by rallying.

ETF flows during escalation vs de-escalation: During October's escalation (23 attacks, Brent $98→$110) US spot ETFs lost $615M; during the Sept 20–Oct 3 de-escalation window they gained ~$1.1B. The ETF investor sells war and buys ceasefire — the opposite of a haven flow.

Stablecoins as capital flight: Total stablecoin supply ~$320B (USDT ~$180B, USDC ~$60B+), the growth concentrated on TRON/Hyperliquid rails (USDT settlement), which is the Gulf, Turkish and Russian corridor. CENTCOM's $350M Iranian freeze and Sberbank's approval are the two ends of the same pipe. The Iranian LPG leak (8 tankers, 4.1M bbl — Reuters) is settled somewhere; USDT on TRON is the desk's base case.

Country-level adoption: Russia (Sberbank licensed), Iran (frozen but active), Gulf states (Dubai as the settlement hub for both sides' trade finance). No new sovereign adoption announcements this weekend.

Mining: Henry Hub $3.12 keeps US mining economics intact even at $81K; hash rate near record; the quantum narrative, not energy, is the miners' weekend headline risk.

DeFi TVL: ~$70B at mid-year (−39% YTD from $115B in January) with only TRON and Hyperliquid growing — stablecoin settlement and on-chain perps, i.e., the war-finance and leverage use cases, are the only DeFi categories growing during the conflict.

Historical comparison: Russia–Ukraine 2022: BTC −10% in the first week, −60% over the year (Fed hiking). Israel–Hamas Oct 2023: BTC +30% in the following two months (ETF approval narrative). 2026 Iran war: BTC flat-to-down over 233 days with the Fed hiking once. The common factor is the Fed, not the war: Bitcoin prices dollar liquidity, and in every one of these episodes it tracked the policy path rather than the conflict.

G Conviction Views & Trade Ideas

1. Long the stagflation rotation pair: XLV + XLE + RSP vs SOXX + IGV HIGH

Thesis: Paid six of seven sessions last week; the weekend tape (Al Jubayl, VLCC, Riyadh alert) favours the long leg; Meta/Tesla capex Wednesday is the asymmetric catalyst — a cut is a credit event for the short leg, a raise is already in the long leg's energy demand. RBC and the Goldman prime data say the institutional rotation has started, not finished. Risk/reward: +6–8% on the pair through FOMC vs −4% on a Hormuz framework plus semis squeeze. Risk 1:1.8. Levels: SOXX — cover one-third on a 10th straight down day (exhaustion), re-enter on a bounce to the 20-day. XLV: add on any close above Friday's record. What kills it: Macron's tour produces an Iranian-signed Hormuz text (reflation quadrant).

2. Long 10Y/20Y duration into the auction, hedged with a 2s10s bear-steepener — the auction is the trade, not the view HIGH · tactical

Thesis: 10Y 5.09% after a 28bp rally from 5.33%; the 20Y $13B Wednesday 1pm is the first coupon supply since; foreign official sellers confirmed (China 2008 low, Japan −3.2%). Two outcomes, both tradeable: a clean auction (indirects >65%, no tail) confirms the growth-fear bid and sends the 10Y to 4.95% — own duration into it; a tail >2bp with indirects <60% confirms the term-premium regime and sends the 10Y back through 5.19% toward 5.35% — the bear-steepener pays. Structure: long TLT/TY in half size with a 2s10s steepener (long 2Y / short 10Y) in half size: the steepener wins on a tail, duration wins on a clean print, the combination loses only on a bull-flattener (which needs a bust signal before Wednesday). Levels: 10Y 4.95 / 5.05 (Thu low) / 5.09 / 5.19 (Wed close) / 5.25 / 5.33 / 5.365. 2s10s +32 / +37 / +44 / +50 (AMBER).

3. Long silver — accumulate the washout; the COT confirms the shorts are fresh MEDIUM

Thesis: Oct 13 COT: large spec net long 22,631 (−522), commercial net short 39,442 (+2,150) with open interest +3,303 — new shorts, not long liquidation, into a −54% drawdown with SLV creations +17M shares since June and the dealer-side distribution (Jane Street 20.6M → 6.7M shares by Q2) already two quarters old. Spot $56.87, G/S ~73, dollar lower, Fed peak priced. Entry: first third on ($56–57.5); add above $58.50 (pre-CPI Wed level); again above $60. Target $62–64 (+10–12%); stop a daily close below $54.50. Risk 1:2.2. Kills it: a 20Y tail that sends DXY >103 and real yields up (silver falls faster than gold); a second Korean margin cascade. Instruments: SLV/SIVR, SI Dec, SLV Dec $55/$62 call spread (~1:3) for defined risk through FOMC; miners (PAAS, HL, AG) only after a second green close.

4. Long Brent/WTI distillate crack + refiners (VLO reports Thu); Brent Dec $115/$125 call spread for the strike tail MEDIUM

Thesis: The market has priced the IEA's final 100M barrels and shadow-fleet relief; it is now pricing the attacks — and the attacks moved inside the Gulf this weekend. Dated Brent ~$130, European diesel 2× YTD, IEA diesel deficit through 2H27, Brent–WTI re-widened to $11. Risk/reward: cracks +10–15% on escalation / −10% on a Russian-tanker easing plus Hormuz framework; refiners +8–12% / −8%; the call spread (~1:3) is the defined-risk tail for a US strike (desk 27% pre-Nov 3, 45% by Dec 31). Monday risk: WTI Nov expires Tuesday with CTAs max-long — a $3–4 air pocket is normal. Levels: Brent $104.60 / $107 / $110 (Fri high) / $112 (gap trigger) / $115 / $120 (Polymarket "ceasefire before $120") / $126 (Apr 30 high). WTI $95 / $98.98 / $101 / $105.

5. Long US defence primes into RTX/NOC (Tue) and LMT (Thu) vs short airlines (UAL Tue, AAL Thu) MEDIUM

Thesis: S&P 1500 A&D −19% from August high, LMT −25% from 2026 high, while Rheinmetall +5.3% Friday, the $87.6B supplemental is unenacted and bipartisan, interceptor expenditure is running at record rates (Riyadh intercepts nightly), and Egypt just offered to join Saudi defence. The prints are the backlog catalyst. Risk/reward: ITA +10–15% through the lame-duck supplemental vs −8% on a Hormuz agreement plus a Democratic House. Instruments: ITA, LMT, RTX, NOC, HII; avoid BA (commercial-aero fuel exposure). JETS/UAL short: cover on Brent <$100. Levels: LMT $400 area add zone; RTX no pre-positioning above a 3% gap; ITA stop below the October low.

6. SPX Oct 30 7,500/7,200 put spread + VIX Nov 22/30 call spread — own the event cluster MEDIUM

Thesis: VIX 19.99 with 22.31 intraday on a −1.1% day, the front of the VIX curve inverted, S&P below the 50-day, SOXX nine days down, Black Monday's anniversary Monday, no Fed voice for ten days, and a dense cluster: 20Y Wed 1pm, Meta/Tesla Wed 4pm, LMT/PG Thu, PMIs Fri, Israel election + FOMC Oct 27–28, GDP + PCE Oct 29. Implied vol is still cheap relative to the realised path. Structure: finance with a short Oct 23 7,850 call (the Oct 6 record 7,819 caps). Risk/reward: pays on the bust quadrant (23%) and on a 20Y tail; loses the premium in a Meta/Tesla relief rally. This is the hedge for trades 1–5, not a directional short. Levels: SPX 7,819 / 7,706 (50-day, now resistance) / 7,659 / 7,600 / 7,500 (key) / 7,300. VIX 16.5 / 20 / 22.3 / 25 / 30.

7. Bitcoin — stand aside at the floor; two entries only LOW

Thesis: Six sessions in $80–82K, Polymarket 77% for a seventh, ETF seller exhausted (Friday −$82M, four funds at zero), no buyer appeared, MSCI removes a leveraged bid in November, quantum is the weekend narrative. Entries: (i) daily close above $84.5K with a positive ETF day → momentum long to $88K (6–12-month cost basis), stop $82K; (ii) a flush through $79,400 to $77.2K that prints an ETF inflow within 48 hours → capitulation long, stop $74K, target $85K. No position in between. Macro triggers: DXY <101.6 + 20Y bought = (i); 20Y tail + DXY >102.3 = (ii). ETH: no view until ETH/BTC stops making lows (0.0298). MSTR: short premium-to-NAV into Nov 11 via MSTR vs IBIT if premium >1.3× — index mechanics, not a BTC view. Levels: $77.2K / $79.4K / $79.7K / $80–82K / $82.7K / $84.5K / $88K. ETH $2,350 / $2,425 / $2,520 / $2,650.

8. Korea — begin a thirds accumulation in EWY on the first foreign net-buy day LOW · NEW

Thesis: −40% from peak, −7.57% Thursday with a circuit breaker, foreigners' first net buy in nine sessions Friday with a buy-side sidecar; the HBM/memory thesis is intact, the price has halved. Risk/reward: first third only; −15% further downside sized; +30% to the 200-day over two quarters. Stop: KOSPI close below 5,300. Kills it: a Meta/Tesla capex cut Wednesday (Korea is the vendor chain). This is the Marks trade — buy what the forced seller must sell — and it is LOW conviction on timing, not on thesis.

H Risk Radar

Top 3 tail risks

1. Sunday night gap + Wednesday 20Y tail = the yield-spike configuration the K3 dashboard has been warning about. A Brent gap above $112 on the weekend's shipping news into a 10Y that rallied 28bp on a growth-fear bid and a short squeeze, followed by $13B of 20-year paper offered to a market that learned Friday night its two largest foreign holders are selling into a $2.0T deficit — with the Fed in blackout. A tail of 2bp+ with indirects below 60% sends the 10Y back through 5.19% toward 5.33% and reverses the week's rotation in a day. K3 would go to 4 RED (yield spike imminent). Hedge: trade 2's steepener leg, trade 6.

2. The AI-credit repricing produces a default, not a drawdown, into Meta/Tesla capex guidance Wednesday. CoreWeave's 2032s at ~15%, the stock −25% on the week, a software basket down $130B Friday, KOSPI −40% from peak with margin-driven circuit breakers, Goldman's prime desk reporting the second-fastest hedge-fund AI selling in a year. A capex cut from either Meta or Tesla is the trigger that turns a cohort drawdown into a vendor-chain credit event (Nebius, CoreWeave, Korean memory, SOXX). Hedge: trade 6; short leg of trade 1; delay trade 8.

3. The war widens faster than the count — a US-crewed or US-flagged hull, or a Saudi facility, before Nov 3. Attacks have moved 68–78nm inside the Gulf to Al Jubayl (Saudi Arabia's petrochemical hub) using small-boat RPGs; a claimed VLCC mine strike; a Riyadh alert Sunday morning; Egypt offering to defend Saudi Arabia; Hezbollah on readiness; Trump calling the war "a military exercise." The President has said no strikes before the midterms; the configuration in which that promise fails is a mass-casualty event. Desk pre-midterm strike probability 27%; post-midterm 45%. Hedge: trade 4's call spread, trade 5.

What would change the base case

Toward reflation: an Iranian-signed Hormuz text out of Macron's Oct 19–21 tour or the Pakistan channel; a China Q3 print above 4.6% with retail sales above 1%; a week with fewer than six UKMTO incidents; Saudi exports above 8.5 mb/d; IRGC payroll resumed (Tehran has liquidity and can wait). Toward bust: a CoreWeave-class default or covenant event; a Meta or Tesla capex cut; a KOSPI close below 5,300; MOVE above 120; HY OAS above 400bp.

Black swans — peripheral vision

A supertanker loss with crew casualties and an oil slick in the Gulf (the IRGC's Saturday claim, if confirmed with a name, is the first one); a Houthi hit on Ras Tanura or Abqaiq (Riyadh and Khamis Mushait intercepts are now nightly); an Israeli pre-emptive strike on Iranian nuclear sites in the week before or after Oct 27 (Netanyahu's bloc short of 61 in every poll — a caretaker PM with a war incentive); a quantum-computing announcement credible enough to move dormant Satoshi-era supply (6.4M BTC flagged by the Quantum Alliance); a US Treasury auction failure (stop-through with a dealer take above 25%); a Moody's downgrade of France on Friday that reprices OAT–Bund and drags the basis trade; a Trump–Netanyahu rupture or a Trump–Putin energy deal that removes Russian barrels from sanctions overnight (bearish Brent, bullish everything else).

Read: Jane Street's Q4-2025 move (41K → 20.6M shares, a ~500× increase that made it the largest reported holder ahead of BlackRock) was the manipulation flag; >87% of its $662B reported book is options-linked, so the SLV shares were a delta hedge against short puts/long calls sold to the public during the silver run to $75+. By Q2-2026 it held 6.68M — two-thirds of the position unwound into the first leg of the decline. Citadel and Susquehanna showed the same pattern. The dealer distribution is two quarters old; the Q2 book is wealth-channel (MS/UBS/BofA/LPL/WFC/JPM/RJF = ~51M shares, ~60% of the top-10) which is sticky retail money. Fund-level: SLV net creations +17M shares since June into a −54% drawdown — the public bought the dip the dealers sold. The Q3 13F (Nov 14) will show whether Jane Street re-hedged into the September $57 breakdown; a rebuild toward 15M+ would be the signal that dealers are again short puts into retail. Silver COT (Oct 13): large spec net long 22,631, commercial net short 39,442 (+2,150) on rising OI — the futures market has the shorts the ETF market lacks.

GLD — SPDR Gold Shares

AUM ~$140B class (peaked above $141B in December 2025 at the $4,300 record; gold is 3% below that record while tonnage is modestly lower after Q1 profit-taking). Top holders (Q2 2026): BlackRock Fund Advisors, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, JPMorgan, UBS, Goldman — the same wealth-channel set as SLV, plus Bridgewater (long-standing core position) and the Saudi and Qatari sovereign vehicles via custodians. Central-bank demand (WGC): the key metric for GLD is whether official-sector buying stays above ~50 tonnes a month; September's run-rate was consistent with that — Poland, Brazil, Serbia and the Gulf central banks are the stated buyers; China's PBoC reports continuing monthly additions. Signal: GLD creations flat-to-positive in October while silver creations outran price — the gold bid is official-sector, the silver bid is retail. Friday NAVs not published at compile.

BTC ETFs — IBIT / FBTC / GBTC

Fund	Oct 16 (Fri, final)	Oct 13–15	Oct MTD	Read
IBIT (BlackRock)	−$71.8M	mixed; led the Oct 14 −$261M day	bulk of −$614.9M	87% of Friday's outflow. The marginal institutional seller is the IBIT holder — the 2024–25 cost basis is $60–75K, so this is profit protection, not capitulation.
FBTC (Fidelity)	−$10.6M	small net outflows	negative	Fidelity's channel is reducing steadily — the retail-advisor book de-risking.
GBTC + BTC mini (Grayscale)	$0	~$0	~flat	Grayscale's seller is exhausted; GBTC's fee-driven outflow of 2024–25 has ended.
BITB / ARKB / HODL	$0	~$0	~flat	Four funds at exactly zero on a Friday: no price-insensitive bid, no forced seller.
Total	−$82.41M	+$175.7M / −$261.4M / +$5.1M	−$614.9M · YTD +$315.5M · since launch ~$57.0B	2026 YTD net demand is a rounding error. ETH ETFs: −$542M the week of Oct 5–9 (ETHA −$477M).

13F read (Q2 2026, carried): Hedge funds (Millennium, Jane Street, Citadel, Susquehanna) hold IBIT/FBTC primarily as basis-trade hedges against CME futures; the Q2 filings showed basis positions cut as the CME basis compressed toward cash. Wealth channels (Morgan Stanley, Goldman PWM, UBS) were net adders in Q2. State pensions (Wisconsin, Michigan) steady. Strategy (MSTR) is the index-mechanics seller from Nov 11 (MSCI exclusion of "non-operating companies"; effective after Nov 30 close) — the only forced flow on the calendar, and it is a seller.

K Military Force Analysis & Market Impact — Iran War Day 233

K1) Force comparison dashboard

US forces in / en route to CENTCOM

Carriers — two on station: USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77, CSG-10, CVW-7; DDGs Donald Cook, Ross) and USS George Washington (CVN-73, CVW-5 with F-35C; DDG Shoup), both Arabian Sea. Third carrier: Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71, CSG-9: CVW-11, Paul Hamilton, Decatur, CG Chosin) transiting the Pacific westward for late Oct/Nov. Ronald Reagan departed San Diego Oct 7. ARGs: Boxer + 11th MEU (Arabian Sea since March); Makin Island + 13th MEU (F-35B) westbound. Independent deployers: Milius, John Paul Jones, Rafael Peralta, John Finn, ESB Miguel Keith, Carl M. Levin; Red Sea: Jason Dunham, Gonzalez. Allies: France deploying assets to Saudi Arabia; Macron tours UAE/Bahrain/Kuwait/Qatar Oct 19–21; Egypt's Sisi (Sat) will defend Saudi Arabia "if requested" pending parliament; 22-nation safe-passage statement; US–Japan large-scale drills Oct 19–29. CENTCOM (Cooper, Oct 16): ~400 merchant transits/wk, >100M bbl, 1.3B bbl "in recent months," the strait "controlled by the US and partners, not Iran"; $25B Iranian crude blocked; ~$350M crypto frozen; Iran withholding IRGC pay. CENTCOM says the strait is cleared of mines and ships are being hit by projectiles — directly contradicted by the IRGC's Saturday mine claim. Strike options: GBU-43/B MOAB plans prepared (CBS/CNN) for energy and nuclear sites if ordered; reports Trump has ordered readiness for larger strikes after Nov 3. Casualties: DoD 21 KIA / 865 WIA; none new this weekend. Aircraft: CRS 81 lost/damaged ($1.9–3.3B replacement).

Iran & proxies

Weekend navy/strait: IRGC claims a supertanker (>2M bbl) hit a mine on an "unauthorised" route and burned — unnamed, unverified. UKMTO (Sat): tanker hit by "unknown projectile" 68nm NE of Al Jubayl (crew evacuated); second tanker hit by RPG from a small boat ~78nm NE of Jubail — new attack type, new geography (northern Gulf). UKMTO weekly: 10+ vessels attacked since last Sunday (highest since Feb), 23 in October (~2× average), one sinking (GFS Pride — US says IRGC projectile, Iran says mine), two disabled, three damaged; "most ships now refuse to report." UKMTO transits: 125 out / 129 in over 7 days (~36/day) vs CENTCOM 400/wk. Kpler: Hormuz flows 11.6 mb/d (68% of 17.1 baseline). IMO: 106 confirmed incidents / 24 seafarer deaths through Thu; Windward ~1 in 50 transits hit in Q3. Posture: Acting DefMin Majid Ibn Reza: Iranian missiles "will decide the war's course… your bombs will explode… in the US economy and your electoral calculations." Army spokesman Akraminia: strait reopens if the US leaves, "if it does not, we will expel it." Iranian naval officer: the strait is "closed," transits must coordinate with the Persian Gulf Strait Authority. WSJ: population prepared for renewed war "in coming weeks"; Hezbollah on readiness; Lebanon holding >1,000 lb of seized Hezbollah explosives (Rubio pressing Aoun). Economy: Kpler crude exports zero in Sept; Reuters: 8 tankers / 4.1M bbl LPG out of the Gulf of Oman — the product channel leaks; IRGC pay withheld (CENTCOM claim). Houthis: Riyadh alert early Sunday (2 ballistic missiles at Khamis Mushait + drone intercepted); coalition intercepted 4 drones Sat; King Khalid airport hit 20× in October (17 dead / 333 injured per Oct 14 brief; 13 killed in the Oct 10 strike); Aden presidential palace attack (5 killed); Aden airport hit twice in a week; Saudi strikes killed 12 in Yemen Sat (Taiz 9, Dhamar 3 children). Houthis pushing for control of Bab al-Mandeb. Diplomacy: Araghchi at OIC Baghdad with Turkey/Egypt/Libya/Lebanon/Algeria FMs, backing a "political process" for Yemen; Yemen's FM: Iran "is a party to the war." Pezeshkian "ready for dialogue," "difficult to trust" the US. Trump (Sat): the war is "just a military exercise"; earlier "nobody to talk to," ends "very, very soon." X suspended 13,000 Iran/Russia/China influence accounts.

Key asymmetries

US advantages: two carriers on station and a third transiting; air/naval superiority confirmed by Iran's reliance on mines, small boats and dhow spotters; the blockade works at the fiscal level (crude exports zero per Kpler, IRGC payroll); 400 transits/wk (CENTCOM) and Saudi exports 8.17 mb/d (from 3.70 in August) prove the convoy/bypass system; sanctions reach into Iraqi, Cuban and crypto rails; France and Egypt reinforcing Saudi defence. Iranian advantages: geography — the weekend proved the attack surface now includes the northern Gulf 70+nm from the strait, where convoys do not operate; asymmetric cost (an RPG vs a $110 Brent print; a mine vs a 2M-bbl VLCC); visibility — UKMTO's admission that most victims no longer report means the official count understates the war, which lowers the US political cost of inaction and raises the shipping market's; proxy depth (Houthis reaching Riyadh nightly, Bab al-Mandeb; Hezbollah on readiness); the leak (LPG channel = liquidity = time); the political calendar (midterms constrain US escalation; Israel's Oct 27 election is a wildcard in Iran's favour only if it produces paralysis); a 440.9 kg 60% stockpile bermed against ground raid.

War cost tracker

Direct US cost: ~$113B through June (CRS/press); >$40B direct operations at the last Pentagon update; desk run-rate $300–400M/day in the blockade phase (two CSGs, ARG, ISR, interceptors — the nightly Riyadh/Khamis Mushait intercepts are Saudi, but US SM-3/SM-6 expenditure in the Gulf continues). Supplemental: $87.6B request unenacted; SM-3 replenishment $6.3B; 12 Apaches; 81 aircraft at $1.9–3.3B. FY2026 closed: deficit $2.0T (+$218B, +12%); outlays +6%; net interest (~$1.1T) > defence; FY27 Pentagon request $1.5T. Allied/market cost: Iraq says it has lost $60B, exports 2.6 mb/d vs 3.5 pre-war; Howden Re $2–3B war claims vs $1.5–2B annual premium; war-risk cover 6–10% of hull (up to $20M per VLCC voyage); >3,000 Saudi flights cancelled in a week; UK advises against all but essential travel to Saudi Arabia; Asian Cup (Jan 7–Feb 5) still scheduled; IEA 330M bbl released + final 100M in progress; US diesel >$6; AAA gasoline $4.33 vs $3.06 a year ago. Iranian cost: $25B crude exports blocked, $350M crypto frozen, IRGC pay withheld; partially offset by the LPG channel (4.1M bbl ≈ $150–200M at product prices).

Key developments, 24–48h: IRGC VLCC mine claim (Sat 05:31 ET); UKMTO two tanker hits off Al Jubayl incl. RPG from small boat (Sat 03:01 / 04:47 ET); UKMTO weekly 10+ / October 23, "busiest month since March," most ships not reporting (Fri 21:56, Sat 19:28 ET); Riyadh "hostile aerial threat" alert, 2 BMs + 1 drone intercepted (early Sun); Trump "just a military exercise" (Sat); Araghchi at OIC Baghdad (Sat); Sisi defence offer to Saudi (Sat); coalition 4 drones intercepted over Riyadh/Eastern/Southern regions, 2 launch platforms destroyed in Saada (Sat); Saudi strikes kill 12 in Yemen (Sat); Reuters 8-tanker LPG leak; Iraq $60B loss / 2.6 mb/d exports (Fri); Yemen FM rejects Iranian mediation (Sat); Houthis release 159 prisoners (Sat); X suspends 13,000 accounts.

K2) Stock market war impact

Beneficiaries

Energy: XLE +2.5% Fri (best sector), XOM +2.5%, CVX +2.6%; refiners at records (VLO/MPC/PSX); FTSE 100 at a 7-week high on energy weight. Defence/aerospace: Rheinmetall +5.3% (DAX leader); US primes lagging (S&P 1500 A&D −19% from Aug high, LMT −25% from 2026 high) — the gap is the trade into RTX/NOC Tue, LMT Thu. Shipping/tankers: VLCC rates at records with war-risk premia up to $20M/voyage; owners (FRO/DHT) tactically exposed to the shadow-fleet sanctions-easing decision. Cybersecurity: X's 13,000-account purge and the IRGC's spoofing of tanker AIS are the demand drivers; CRWD/PANW held better than software broadly (IGV basket −$130B Fri). Gold miners: NEM reports Thu with gold at $4,164; margins at records.

Sufferers

Airlines: jet fuel at $110 Brent; UAL (Tue) and AAL (Thu) report into it; >3,000 Saudi flight cancellations a week; UK travel advisory. Travel/leisure: Gulf tourism events postponed (Saudi International, Six Kings Slam moved to Dec 27). Consumer discretionary: AAA gasoline $4.33, diesel >$6, real wages negative, UMich 46.3; retail control +0.1%. AI-infrastructure credit: not a war casualty directly, but the 10Y at 5.09–5.37% that funds it is partly the war premium — CRWV −25% w/w, KOSPI −40% from peak. Transports: CSX/UNP/NSC report this week with diesel >$6. European industrials: input costs (energy +18.8% y/y in HICP).

Historical pattern & current drawdown

Gulf War (1990–91): SPX −19.9% peak-to-trough (Jul–Oct 1990), +25% in the six months after the air war began (Jan 17, 1991). Iraq 2003: −14% into the invasion (Mar 11 low), +30% over the following 12 months. Libya 2011: −6% (Feb–Mar), recovered in weeks; the Aug 2011 −19% was the US downgrade, not Libya. Russia–Ukraine 2022: −12% into Feb 24, then −25% peak-to-trough as the Fed hiked. Iran 2026: SPX +~25% since Feb 28 (from ~6,150 to 7,659), with the −7% March drawdown fully recovered by May; the current drawdown is −2.0% from the Oct 6 record — the smallest war-period drawdown in the set, and the only one in which the Fed hiked during the war. The 2022 analogue (Fed hiking into an energy shock) is the relevant one and it argues the drawdown is not finished. Defence tracker (Fri): LMT ~$400 area (−25% from 2026 high), RTX/NOC into Tue prints, GD steady, BA lagging on commercial-aero fuel; ITA −19% from August; Rheinmetall +5.3% Fri.

K3) Treasury yield-spike indicators — traffic light dashboard

#	Indicator	Status	Reading
1	War spending fiscal blowout (>$50B/qtr unbudgeted → RED)	AMBER	$87.6B supplemental unenacted; FY26 deficit $2.0T (+$218B); net interest ~$1.1T; FY27 request $1.5T; Riyadh-interceptor burn adds to the allied bill. Not RED until the supplemental is appropriated or the Oct 27 Treasury borrowing estimate exceeds CBO.
2	CPI re-acceleration (>0.4% m/m energy-led → RED)	RED	Sept CPI +0.6% (gasoline +9.1%); PPI +1.3%; import prices +1.1% / 8.1% y/y; export prices +2.15% / 11.6% — pipeline confirmed at three stages. The weekend's Brent re-escalation (Al Jubayl, VLCC) threatens the October mitigant (gasoline $4.33 vs $4.37; Cleveland nowcast +0.3%).
3	Term premium expansion (ACM)	AMBER	ACM 10Y term premium ~+0.9–1.0%; compressed last week with the 10Y −13bp; France at a 25-year term-premium high; Moody's France review Fri Oct 23 is the contagion watch. AMBER on level, neutral on direction until the 20Y auction.
4	Treasury auction demand (10Y/30Y bid-to-cover)	GREEN	No coupon supply last week. 20Y $13B Wed Oct 21 1:00pm is the test after a 28bp rally and a foreign-selling print; 5Y TIPS Thu. Tail >2bp with indirects <60% flips to AMBER; a stop-through confirms the duration trade. This is the single indicator that decides whether the dashboard goes to 4 RED this week.
5	Foreign holder selling (TIC Japan/China)	RED	August TIC (Fri): China $590.7B (−2.4% m/m; lowest since Aug 2008; −16% y/y), Japan $1.068T (−3.2%) — second consecutive month of net selling by both top-two official holders. Offset: total +$83B to $9.331T on UK (+1.1% to $1.009T) and Canada (+4.2%) — levered/custodial, price-sensitive flow. Fed custody −$15.6B latest week.
6	Fed rhetoric shift (tolerating higher inflation → AMBER)	AMBER	Warsh declined to pre-commit; the market read a silent Fed as "no October" (hold 87%) and priced one more and done (≥4.5% end-2026 at 16% from 27%). Not tolerance by the Fed — tolerance by the market's read of it. Blackout freezes the colour until Oct 28.
7	Fiscal deficit trajectory (CBO, supplementals)	RED	FY26 $2.0T (+12%) confirmed; outlays +6%, receipts +3%; net interest > defence and Medicare; war supplemental pending; no offsets. Structural RED.
8	Credit rating watch	GREEN	No US sovereign agency comment. Moody's France (Aa3 negative) Fri Oct 23 is the sovereign-contagion watch (BTP–Bund 105bp, 18-mo wide; UK 10Y gilt 5.35%).
9	2s10s bear steepening	GREEN	2s10s +37bp from +32 Friday — a bull-steepener (2Y −3bp, 10Y +1bp); the week a bull-flattener (+44 → +37). Not the spike signature. Flips to AMBER on a 10Y close >5.25% with the 2Y flat — exactly what a Sunday Brent gap + Wednesday tail would produce.
10	MOVE Index (>120 → RED)	GREEN	MOVE 102.5 (Thu); Friday not retrieved but low-vol-consistent. Below 120; above 110 is the basis-trade warning (UK/Canada absorption of Treasuries is this trade).

Summary light: AMBER — unchanged at 3 RED / 3 AMBER / 4 GREEN, one indicator from RED. No new data over the weekend; the count stays at 3 RED (CPI pipeline, foreign selling, fiscal). The fourth RED is one 20Y tail (#4) or one MOVE >120 print (#10) away — and the weekend's shipping escalation raises the odds of both by raising the odds that Sunday's futures open bear-steepens the curve into the auction. The price has not confirmed the dashboard (10Y 5.09%, 24bp below Wednesday's high); Wednesday 1:00pm is when it either does or does not.

K4) Commodity war premium

Brent war premium

~$37

$109.86 vs $72.48 pre-war (Feb 27)

Dated Brent ~$130 (physical premium ~$20). Brent–WTI $11 (from $8). Hormuz traffic: CENTCOM ~400/wk (~57/day); UKMTO 254 in 7 days (~36/day); pre-crisis ~85–135/day; Kpler flows 11.6 vs 17.1 mb/d (−5.5). ~40% of Gulf crude bypassing by pipeline (Petroline 7.0 mb/d, ADCOP 1.5 at 100%); Saudi exports 8.17 mb/d Oct 1–15 (5.62 Sep, 3.70 Aug). Weekend: attacks now 68–78nm inside the Gulf off Al Jubayl — the Petroline terminus (Yanbu) was a missile target Friday; a Ras Tanura/Jubail disruption would hit the bypass, not the strait. Scenarios: Eurasia $110–125 on resumed fighting; Goldman/JPM bands $95–130; Polymarket "ceasefire before $120" live; ING: full premium removal needs a US–Iran agreement. Duration: IEA diesel deficit through 4Q26, no restocking before 2H27; 2027 demand 620 kb/d below 2025. Iraq: exports 2.6 mb/d (Sept 1–21) vs 3.5 pre-war; $60B lost (FM Hussein, Fri); Iraqi bank sanctioned Thu. Emergency stocks: IEA 330M released, final 100M in progress — priced. US crude −8.56M bbl (wk to Oct 9).

Gold & silver safe-haven read

G/Oil 38 · G/S 73

Gold ~7.5% below 200-DMA

Spot gold $4,164.10 (−0.14% Fri; wk −0.1%; week low $4,073), 3% below the Dec-2025 record above $4,300; the 200-DMA (~$4,500 after the H1 run) is above price — gold is in a corrective phase inside a bull market, not a haven spike. Gold/Brent 38 (from ~55 pre-war): oil has outrun gold by a third during the war — the market prices supply shock, not monetary debasement. Silver $56.87 (−0.76%; wk −4.4%): industrial (Korea/semis) demand fear dominates the monetary bid; COT shows commercials adding shorts (+2,150) into rising OI — the fresh-short signature that precedes squeezes. G/S 73 (from 65 in July). Central banks: official buying running above the ~50 t/month GLD threshold (Poland, Brazil, Serbia, Gulf, PBoC). Platinum $1,626, palladium $1,096.

Energy infrastructure damage tracker

~5.5 mb/d of flow offline (Hormuz)

Hormuz chokepoint: 11.6 vs 17.1 mb/d (Kpler) — a flow disruption, not a facility loss; repair timeline is political, not engineering. Iraq: ~0.9 mb/d of exports lost (2.6 vs 3.5) — Basra-route insurance and Hormuz routing; Iraqi FM $60B cumulative. Iran: crude exports zero (Kpler, Sept); LPG channel leaking 4.1M bbl (Reuters). Saudi: Yanbu (Petroline terminus) missile intercepted Fri; Riyadh/Khamis Mushait intercepts nightly; no confirmed hit on Ras Tanura/Abqaiq/Jubail processing — the RPG attacks were on hulls, not plant. Gulf states: all four of Macron's hosts (UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar) have had energy sites attacked during the war (The National). Russia: Ukraine vows continued refinery strikes despite Trump's Oct 11 "truce"; Novak alleges Oct 14 hits on Saratov/Ryazan (unconfirmed); Omsk/Far East refineries previously shut for months — Russian product exports constrained, supporting the diesel crack. Vessels: three total losses in the war (GFS Pride, Cape Dao, plus one earlier); the IRGC's Saturday VLCC claim would be the fourth and largest if confirmed. Repair: none required for flows to resume — a US–Iran text restores ~5 mb/d within weeks; a Saudi plant hit would take 3–9 months (Abqaiq 2019 precedent: 5.7 mb/d offline, ~70% restored in 2 weeks).

K5) War impact on Bitcoin & crypto

Escalation vs de-escalation phases: Feb 28–Mar 15 (war start): BTC −9% (with Nasdaq −7%), gold +6%. Jun (Islamabad MOU / ceasefire): BTC +11%, gold −3%, SPX +5% — BTC traded as risk-on. Sept 20–Oct 3 (de-escalation window): BTC +7%, ETFs +$1.1B. Oct 4–17 (Hormuz re-escalation, 23 attacks, Brent $98→$110): BTC −4% then flat at $80–82K, ETFs −$615M, gold +1%, SPX −2%. The pattern over 233 days is unambiguous: Bitcoin rallies on ceasefire and sells (or stalls) on escalation — risk-on behaviour with the beta decaying toward zero as the marginal flow dries up. Correlation: 30-day BTC–SPX ~0.1 (from ~0.6 in Sept), BTC–gold ~0, BTC–DXY −0.3 — the dollar is the only live driver. Sanctions evasion: CENTCOM's $350M freeze is the first official confirmation that Iranian state-linked crypto was material enough to target; Sberbank's trading approval (Oct 14) is Russia institutionalising the rail; the LPG leak implies a settlement channel the desk assigns to USDT/TRON. Stablecoins: total ~$320B (USDT ~$180B); TRON and Hyperliquid the only growing DeFi chains — settlement and perps, i.e., capital flight and leverage. No net stablecoin contraction during October's escalation = no capital flight out of crypto, but no inflow either. Hash rate / mining: Henry Hub $3.12 keeps US mining profitable at $81K; hash rate near record; no war-driven energy squeeze on US miners — the war's energy shock is in oil and LNG import prices, not US gas. Iranian mining (historically ~4% of hash) is now sanctions-constrained and payroll-constrained. DeFi TVL: ~$70B (−39% YTD), 121 hacks / $942M losses in 2026; TVL fell through both escalation and de-escalation phases — DeFi is pricing the Fed and hacks, not the war. Historical: Russia–Ukraine 2022: BTC −10% first week, −60% over the year (Fed hiking). Israel–Hamas 2023: BTC +30% in two months (ETF narrative, Fed pausing). Iran 2026: BTC flat-to-down with the Fed hiking once. Conclusion unchanged from Day 232: Bitcoin prices dollar liquidity; it tracked the policy path, not the conflict, in every episode. Verdict: not digital gold in this war. Gold +40%, BTC −5%, SPX +25% since Feb 28.

L Geopolitical Escalation / De-escalation Probability Tracker

Ceasefire holds through the midterms (Nov 3)

Polymarket 78% · desk 68%

Desk from 70% · Polymarket unch, volume $530K (from $322K)

Signals to watch: Macron's Gulf tour Oct 19–21 (a French-brokered Hormuz "UNCLOS corridor" text is the EU summit's ask); the next Iranian reply via Pakistan (Munir channel); Araghchi–US meeting by Dec 31 (Polymarket 36%); Witkoff travel (35%); a week with <6 UKMTO incidents; Saudi exports >8.5 mb/d; IRGC payroll resumed. Why desk is below market: the weekend — a claimed VLCC mine strike, RPG attacks 70+nm inside the Gulf, UKMTO's record week with collapsing reporting, a Sunday Riyadh alert, Egypt entering Saudi defence, and a President calling the war "a military exercise" — is the signature of a conflict widening in geography while narrowing in visibility, not one gliding to a text. The LPG leak gives Tehran liquidity, which lowers the lunge risk but lengthens the war. Polymarket's shorter tenors (Oct 18: 93%, Oct 22: 90%, Oct 24: 86%) price ~1.5%/day of decay — the market expects the ceasefire to fray, not break.

US strikes on Iranian territory

Before Nov 3: 27% · by Dec 31: 45%

Pre-midterm unch · post-midterm new line

Triggers to monitor: a US-flagged or US-crewed vessel hit (the RPG attacks off Jubail are inside the convoy's operating area); a mass-casualty Houthi strike on a Gulf airport or US base (Riyadh Oct 10: 13 killed / 300+ hurt; alerts nightly); confirmation of Iranian mines in the convoy lane (the IRGC claims them; CENTCOM says cleared — the VLCC claim is the test); a Hezbollah attack with the seized explosives returned; Roosevelt's arrival in theater (late Oct); a MOAB strike order (CBS/CNN: plans prepared; reports say readiness ordered for after Nov 3 — which is why the post-midterm line is 45%); the Israeli election Oct 27 (Netanyahu: a pre-emptive strike before it is "not convenient" — after it is another matter; every poll has both blocs short of 61). Hormuz agreement by year-end: Polymarket 30%. Ceasefire through Dec 31: 32%.

Diplomatic channels

Pakistan remains the primary mediator (Islamabad venue; Munir central; the June MOU was signed there); Ghalibaf's seven conditions "based on the Islamabad memorandum" are Tehran's text; Trump rejected the seven-day reopening plan. France: Macron in UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar Oct 19–21 — Hormuz freedom of navigation, energy diversification, defence/AI with the UAE, a climate event in Doha; the EU summit's UNCLOS language is the European position; France deploying to Saudi Arabia. Egypt: Sisi offers to defend Saudi Arabia "if requested" (defence only, parliament pending) — a new Arab military vertex. Iraq/OIC: Araghchi in Baghdad with Turkish, Egyptian, Libyan, Lebanese and Algerian FMs — Tehran positioning as mediator in Yemen; Riyadh has not responded; Yemen's FM: Iran "is a party to the war." Qatar: funding Lebanon reconstruction; the Hezbollah-disarmament track runs through Doha and Beirut (Aoun/Salam), Rubio pressing on the explosives. China: involved per the White House; the one vertex with leverage on both Tehran and the oil price; its Treasury selling is its own signal; Q3 GDP Monday. UNSC: blocked (Russia/China vetoed the April force resolution). Back-channels: Witkoff/Kushner/Vance for the US, Araghchi/Ghalibaf for Iran — Trump's "nobody to talk to" says the Supreme Leader's authority is the obstacle, which no mediator fixes. Israel: votes Oct 27; polls: anti-Netanyahu 55 / pro 51 / Arab 14 (Zman Yisrael), Netanyahu 55 / opposition 50 (Ch. 13), 51–51 (Maariv), Eisenkot 54 / Netanyahu 49 (Ch. 12); Polymarket: next PM Eisenkot 50%, Netanyahu 30%.

Status quo: blockade + widening shipping war through the midterms; no US strikes	55%	$105–118	4.95–5.35%	7,450–7,800 / rotation continues	$4,100–4,300 / $55–60	$77–86K	101–103	+5% / −6%
Hormuz framework with Iranian signature (UNCLOS corridor via Macron/Pakistan; tolls dropped; blockade eased)	18%	$85–95	5.20–5.40% (bear-steepener)	+3–5% / semis squeeze +8%	−3% / +2% (ratio falls)	+10–15%	100–101	−8% / +12%
US strikes resume before Nov 3 (MOAB / energy-nuclear sites); Iranian regional retaliation; Saudi plant hit	27%	$118–130	down then up: 4.90% → 5.40%	−5–8% / −10%	+5% / +3%	−10%	103–104	+8% / −10%

Net read: the market prices the first row at 78% and the desk at 68%; the difference is the weekend's geography (Al Jubayl, a VLCC) and visibility (UKMTO's reporting collapse). The second row is the only one in which last week's winning positions (duration, health care vs semis, energy, defence) all lose at once — it requires an Iranian signature that Saturday's statements (Ibn Reza, Akraminia) moved further away, and it is the one Macron's tour could deliver. The third row's asymmetry (every asset's move is larger) is why trade 4's call spread and trade 6 exist; its probability before Nov 3 is held at 27% because the President has publicly tied strikes to the midterm calendar, but the post-midterm line (45% by Dec 31) is new and is the reason the war premium in Brent should not be expected to decay on a quiet week.
