⚠ Overnight tape read — Thursday into Friday

What happened. Thursday was the day the pipeline inflation number came in at a level the Fed's "energy-led" framing cannot hold and the market rallied anyway. September PPI printed +1.3% m/m and 6.3% y/y (consensus +0.6% / 5.5%, the largest 12-month gain since 2022), with core ex-food/energy +0.7% / 5.0% and the ex-trade measure +0.5% / 5.0%; final-demand goods +2.6%, energy goods +10.8%, gasoline +20.3% (half the goods increase), services +0.8%, transportation and warehousing +3.4%, trade margins +1.4% with retail fuel margins −30.3%. Retail sales rose 0.8% (consensus 0.3–0.4%, August revised to +1.3%) — but $4.1B of the $5.7B gain was gasoline stations (+6.4% m/m, +28.1% y/y), ex-gas sales were +0.2% and the control group was +0.1% against 0.3% expected. Claims were 199k (continuing 1.710M, fifth week below 1.73M), Empire State 25.5 (strongest since December 2021), Philly Fed 20.9 with prices received at the highest since May 2025. The nominal economy is hot; the volume economy is flat; the price level is doing the work.

The bond market bought it — again. For the third session running the long end rallied through a hot inflation print: the 10Y fell 10bp to 5.086% (session low 5.05%, three-week low; 5.33% was Wednesday's high), the 30Y 10bp to 5.43%, the 5Y 9–10bp to 4.90%, the 2Y 5bp to 4.77%. 2s10s +32bp from +37 — the flattener is now a bull-flattener on a 1.3% PPI. CME October-hike odds went 37% (Wednesday close) → 44% (Thursday pre-data) → 25–29% after PPI (hold 70.7–75%): the market read the control group and the energy composition, not the headline. Hammack (4:30pm) argued the other side — "more monetary-policy restraint is needed," financial conditions "do not look restrictive," she is "hearing early warning signs of a possible problem with inflation expectations" and lower-income households "struggling"; Goolsbee called September "a disappointing month" and said AI-demand overheating "must be addressed." Warsh's moderated conversation with Georgieva in Bangkok is at 03:30 UTC Friday (11:30pm ET) — his first public words since the September presser and the last Fed voice before the Saturday blackout; it had not occurred at compile.

Equities rotated instead of selling. After Asia's worst session of the year — KOSPI −8.02% to 5,527.12 with a level-one circuit breaker at 12:38 Seoul (20-minute halt), Samsung −9.5%, SK Hynix −11.4%, ~$2.7B of foreign selling and an emergency FSC meeting; Nikkei −5.13% to 64,267.09 (SoftBank −9.4%, Kioxia −11.2%, Tokyo Electron −7.3%); Taiex −3%, Hang Seng −1.47%, CSI 300 −2.0% — US futures opened down 0.6% and closed up: S&P 500 +0.33% to 7,744.06, Dow +1.08% to 52,177.69, Nasdaq +0.08% to 26,713.02 (+1.5% off the low), Russell 2000 +1.38% to 2,767.27, ~70% of S&P members advancing, eight of 11 sectors up. Health care +1.9–2.3% to a record (XLV ~$178), materials +1.8%, discretionary +1.7%, financials +1.4%; technology −0.65%, energy −1.58% despite WTI +3%. The SOX fell for a seventh straight session (~−10% MTD) but closed off the lows; LRCX −7% intraday on a ninth straight decline; NVDA −1.84%; CoreWeave +5.94% after a −9.5% open (it disclosed $5.52B cash at June 30, a $4.0B accumulated deficit and that debt "could constrain financing"); TSM ADR −4.1% on a record quarter (net profit ~NT$763B, +69%; revenue ~$47B above the top of guidance; GM 66.4% from 67.7%; Q4 guide $52.3–54.3B, GM 65–67%; 2026 growth raised to ~44% from >40%; capex $60–64B reaffirmed with the next three years "significantly higher"; HPC 68% of revenue; 2nm 8% of wafers; "close to 20 new fabs"). The Stoxx 600 closed +0.4% at 640.16, its highest since September 22, with Ericsson +12% and ASML/Infineon/ASMI/STM/Siemens Energy/Schneider lower. VIX opened 17.55 (two-week high) and closed 16.45 (−2.5%).

Dollar down, metals up, oil split. DXY −0.46% to 102.00–102.08 from Wednesday's 18-month high of 102.90; EUR/USD 1.1211 (+0.48%), USD/JPY 157.98–158.10 after Katayama said she is "ready to act"; AUD tested 0.6950 after Australia lost 39.3k jobs (unemployment 4.7%, highest since October 2021). Gold Dec settled $4,170.10 (+1.51%), spot $4,165–4,176, recovering all of Wednesday's CPI loss; silver Dec $57.16 (+2.29%), spot $57.3–57.6, after −6% Wednesday; SLV +3.39%, GLD +1.79%; gold/silver 72.7; platinum $1,628. WTI November settled $97.97 (+3.03%) — highest in two weeks — on an EIA draw of 8.6M barrels (largest since February, mostly PADD 3 hurricane shut-ins) and CTAs at 100% max long into Monday's expiry, while Brent December slipped $0.14 to $105.92 after Reuters reported the administration is studying easing sanctions on "shadow fleet" tankers that have carried Russian, Iranian and Venezuelan barrels; Dated Brent is still ~$130. The Brent–WTI spread collapsed from ~$11 to ~$8. Copper −1.1% to $14,338 (third straight decline, still +15% YTD). Nat gas $3.22.

The war did not de-escalate. CENTCOM confirmed the container ship GFS Pride was hit by an IRGC projectile and sank under tow; the Antigua-flagged bulker Cape Dao (struck September 23, one seafarer killed) also sank — two total losses in 48 hours after only one in the first seven months (IMO: 106 confirmed incidents, 24 seafarer deaths since February; FT tally 24 vessels attacked in October, UKMTO >20). Iran's army said a "non-compliant" oil tanker with its AIS off was on fire in the Gulf of Oman inside the IRGC's prohibited zone (unverified; a pro-IRGC outlet claimed several vessels hit); CENTCOM countered that more than 40 commercial ships transited in 24 hours and the blockade is "in full effect." War-risk cover is quoted at 6–10% of hull — up to $20M per VLCC voyage (0.25% pre-war); Howden Re puts market-wide war claims at $2–3B against $1.5–2B of annual premium; Kpler's crude exports averaged 8.5 mb/d in the week to October 12 (~40% below pre-war); 40% of Gulf crude is bypassing Hormuz by pipeline (17% pre-war). CNN reported US strike plans include the GBU-43/B MOAB against Iranian energy and nuclear sites if Trump orders combat resumed — with officials questioning its effectiveness; Trump, at a Thursday tele-rally, said "we've now taken the nuclear weapon away from Iran" and "oil prices will drop like crazy," a day after "I should have probably left the leaders… I don't know who we're negotiating with" and that leakers of B-2 flight timings "should be shot." Iran instructed Hezbollah to raise readiness and summoned all salaried members; France began deploying military assets to Saudi Arabia; the Houthis hit Aden's presidential palace (2–5 killed) and warned Saudi airspace remains unsafe — Riyadh's KKIA is closed to 2100 GMT Saturday, >3,000 Saudi flights cancelled in a week. Bessent: "the noose is tightening" — 16 individuals and 10 entities sanctioned including an Iraqi bank and Iranian offshore banks; Rubio sanctioned Cuba's BICSA. The IEA said ~330M barrels of emergency stocks have been released with ~100M more to come. Polymarket: ceasefire through the midterms 77% (−1), through October 31 80%, through December 31 32%; a Hormuz agreement by year-end 30%; regime fall before 2027 6%. The USS George H.W. Bush is back in the Arabian Sea — two carriers in CENTCOM.

Crypto held the ETF floor. Bitcoin printed $80,150–80,200 at 22:30 ET Wednesday — the lowest since the drawdown began and inside Glassnode's $80–82K US-ETF cost-basis band for the fourth time in a week — and recovered to $82.2K at 00:30 UTC (+0.9% 24h) as the dollar and yields fell; ETH $2,443 (+0.9%), ETH/BTC 0.0297, total crypto market cap $2.87T, BTC dominance 57.6%; liquidations ran $480M–$1B over the 24 hours into the low (~90% longs). Wednesday's final ETF print was −$261.4M (FBTC −$152.7M, IBIT −$110.9M, BITB +$2.2M) and ETH ETFs −$129.5M (ETHA −$109.8M); Thursday's partials are −$7.6M (BTC) and −$18.3M (ETHE) with IBIT/FBTC pending; XRP ETFs extended a 13-week inflow streak (+$0.74M). Strategy bought 250 BTC at $86,194 in the week to October 11; CryptoQuant has 84% of tracked analysts bullish (37% in July, highest since August 2025) — a contrarian flag at a lower low. Friday: import prices 8:30, industrial production 9:15, August TIC at 4pm (K3 indicator #5 — a second month of China/Japan net selling is the flattener's stop-out path), the September Monthly Treasury Statement that closes FY2026, monthly opex, CFTC COT (October 13 positions), Deribit's October expiry at 08:00 UTC, and Warsh at 03:30 UTC.

A Executive Summary — The Big Picture (Dalio Lens)

Where we are: Late cycle, two-speed — and Thursday gave the cleanest single-day picture of the split yet

Nominal hot: PPI 6.3% y/y with final-demand goods +2.6% in a month, retail sales +6.3% y/y, gasoline-station sales +28.1% y/y, Empire State at a near-five-year high with new orders and shipments rising, Philly prices received at a 17-month high, GDPNow 3.6% for Q3 with real PCE nowcast lifted to 3.6%, TSMC guiding 2026 growth to 44% with $60–64B of capex and "close to 20 new fabs," Ericsson +12% on Asia and Middle East network demand, Q3 bank revenue lines (Schwab +17%, BNY and PNC beats) still growing. Real cold: the same retail report's control group was +0.1% and ex-gas sales +0.2% — volume is flat, price is doing the work; Philly's headline slowed to the weakest since June while prices received rose 9 points; the Beige Book's consumer remains "flat and concentrated in high-income households"; claims at 199k say no layoffs yet, but September payrolls were +29k with negative real wages; Australia just lost 39k jobs; Eurozone industrial production fell for a third month; the MBA 30-year is 7.5%. The AI complex is now being repriced on cost of capital rather than demand: TSMC delivered a record quarter and raised its guide and the ADR fell 4%; CoreWeave's own 10-Q language ("debt could constrain financing") moved the stock 15 points intraday; the KOSPI lost 8% in a session on the day the world's largest foundry said supply "still falls well short of demand." The cycle's defining tension — a Fed hiking into flat real consumption and a 7.5% mortgage — has acquired a corollary: the capex that is holding US construction out of recession is funded at junk yields by companies whose equity now trades on their bond prices.

Dominant regime: Stagflation vector, up two more points — the pipeline confirmed the shelf

Tuesday pushed the needle through the growth channel (OPEC's demand cut, Korean/Taiwanese liquidation), Wednesday through the inflation channel (core CPI 0.33%, Beige Book "robust"), Thursday through the pipeline: a 1.3% PPI with 80% of the increase from energy is the supply shock still propagating — producer services +0.8%, transportation +3.4%, trade margins +1.4% are the second-round effects Lagarde "cannot yet see" in Europe, visible in the US at the wholesale level. The control group at +0.1% is the demand destruction the IEA's −2.6 mb/d already describes. The market's response — long end rallying, dollar falling, gold and silver up, cyclicals and small caps outperforming tech, Korea in a circuit breaker — is not reflation's signature and it is not deflation's; it is the stagflation quadrant pricing the Fed's reaction function as near its peak (October hike odds 25–29% after the hottest PPI in four years). The gold/oil ratio at 39.4 (vs ~75 pre-war) still says energy shock, not monetary shock, and gold recovering 100% of its CPI loss in a session on a hotter PPI says the market has started to price the failure of the response rather than the response. Desk regime call: late-cycle reflation with a stagflation vector; probability of the stagflation quadrant by Q1 2027 45% (from 43%); reflation 36% (from 37%); deflationary bust 12%; disinflationary growth 7%.

Beautiful deleveraging status: Absent — and the deleveraging has found its locus in Seoul and in AI credit

Monetary policy is restrictive by every market measure (10Y 5.09%, 30Y 5.43%, mortgage ~7.5%, 10Y TIPS ~2.85%) and Hammack's own test — "financial conditions do not look restrictive" — is a statement about equity multiples, not about the cost of capital to anyone who borrows. The fiscal side is unchanged: CBO's FY2026 deficit ~$2.0T, net interest ~$1.14T above defense and Medicare, the $87.6B war supplemental unenacted; Friday's Monthly Treasury Statement closes the fiscal year and makes the number official. There is no debt monetisation, no coordinated fiscal–monetary mix, no productivity-funded deleveraging. What is new is where the deleveraging bites first: not in US banks (BNY/PNC beat; charge-offs still below 2019), but in the leveraged layer of the AI build — CoreWeave unsecured at ~15%, Oracle CDS at a record, Barclays' server downgrade, LRCX down nine days — and in the exporter that financed it: Korea, where foreigners sold $2.7B in one session and the regulator called an emergency meeting. A 5.1% risk-free rate is doing to AI capex what it did to housing in 2022: the demand is real, the financing is not. Policy adequacy: inadequate. The Fed cannot fix a Hormuz-driven diesel deficit; it can only decide how much demand to destroy to keep expectations anchored, and Hammack's "early warning signs" on expectations versus the market's 25% October odds is the honest range. Warsh at 03:30 UTC is the next and last signal before the blackout.

Key risks vs. opportunities

Risks: (1) The long end has now bought three consecutive hot prints (CPI headline, CPI core, PPI) and sits at a three-week low — that is a position, and the next 48 hours hold its two tests: Warsh at 03:30 UTC (an "energy is transitory" framing bear-steepens; an explicit December endorsement is front-end-bearish but flattener-friendly) and August TIC at 4pm Friday after Fed custody holdings fell $15.6B — a second month of China/Japan net selling flips K3 indicator #5 to RED and converts the three-day rally into a squeeze that has run out of buyers. (2) The AI credit cycle is now an index-level event in Asia and a sector-level one in the US: the KOSPI's 8% day is the largest since 2020, Korea's household margin debt is at a record, and the US SOX has fallen seven days (~10% MTD) on the week TSMC raised its guide. A CoreWeave or Oracle funding event, or a Korean margin-call cascade on Friday's open, turns Thursday's US rotation into a liquidation. (3) Two sinkings in 48 hours, a tanker on fire in the Gulf of Oman, a MOAB in the strike plans, Hezbollah ordered to readiness and a president alternating between "very soon" and "drop like crazy" — the escalation ladder has fewer rungs left than the 77% ceasefire market implies, and the oil market's $8 Brent–WTI spread says the barrel is being re-priced on US supply (hurricane shut-ins, record exports), not on the Gulf, which is where the next shock originates. Opportunities: the 2s10s flattener is paying (+44 → +41 → +37 → +32bp in four sessions) and the 10Y has absorbed a 6.3% PPI without breaking 5.11% — the consensus short is being liquidated on the data it was positioned for; silver's +2.3% from a $54.77 low with SLV +3.4% and the G/S ratio off its 73.8 high is the first candle of the washout the desk flagged Thursday; the health-care/staples-vs-SOX rotation (XLV record high on a 7th straight SOX loss) is the regime trade and it is still cheap; and the Hormuz energy complex (refiners at record highs, XOM/COP at 52-week highs, Dated Brent ~$130, European diesel futures doubled since January) continues to pay while the IEA's diesel deficit runs into 2H27.

Great-power frame

The US–China–Russia triangle moved on two edges Thursday. Washington–Moscow: the administration is studying easing sanctions on the shadow-fleet tankers that carry Russian (and Iranian, Venezuelan) crude — a de facto admission that the IEA's 330M-barrel release is not enough and that Russian barrels are needed to cap Brent before November 3; Zelensky told the FT Ukraine will resume refinery strikes (Ryazan, 400 kb/d, was hit) and criticised US intelligence withdrawal and Starlink throttling; Merz said frozen Russian assets stay under European control after reports Washington wants oversight. Russia is being paid for its barrels with sanctions relief and for its restraint with Ukrainian leverage. Washington–Beijing: HSBC cut its end-2026 China index targets by 9–15%; CSI 300 −2.0%, Hang Seng tech −2.9%; China's Q3 GDP prints Monday with exports +36% and PPI 5% — Beijing is the war's largest beneficiary in export terms and its largest loser in energy terms, and it has not moved. Beijing–Moscow: no new signal; the New Yalu River Bridge opened to North Korea. The triangle's live question is whether a US–Russia tanker deal is the first leg of a broader Hormuz-for-Ukraine trade — that would be ceasefire-positive and oil-negative, and it is not in the 77%.

C Cross-Asset Analysis (Druckenmiller Lens)

Bonds vs. equities: the long end is pricing the recession the PPI implies; equities are pricing the rotation it permits

Three consecutive sessions, three hot prints, three long-end rallies: Tuesday (OPEC/IEA demand cuts), Wednesday (CPI 0.6/0.33 — 10Y 5.33% → 5.19%), Thursday (PPI 1.3/0.7 — 10Y 5.19% → 5.05% low → 5.09%). A bond market that rallies 10bp on a 6.3% PPI is not ignoring inflation; it is reading the +0.1% control group, +0.2% ex-gas retail sales, −30% retail fuel margins and 80%-energy composition as the demand destruction that makes the inflation self-limiting, and reading Hammack's "more restraint" as a hike the long end wants. The bull-flattener (2s10s +32bp from +44 Monday) is the asset-market signature of a Fed near its reaction-function peak in a supply shock: front end anchored by October odds at 25–29%, long end bid by growth fear. Equities took the same message and rotated: the Dow +1.08% and Russell +1.38% on the day the Nasdaq was flat is the broadening that lower long rates permit — rate-sensitives (homebuilders rebounded, XLRE +1.2%, XLF +1.4%), defensives (XLV record), and small caps against a seventh straight SOX loss. The divergence to watch is between US equities (rotating) and Asian equities (liquidating): a KOSPI −8% / Nikkei −5% / Taiex −3% day that produces an S&P +0.3% is not a global risk-off; it is a geographic repricing of who owns the AI-capex financing risk — Korea's exporters and their domestic margin accounts, not US large caps. That dispersion has limits: if Friday's Seoul open brings margin-call selling into the Warsh headline window (12:30 Seoul), the transmission channel is US pre-market semis and the yen.

Risk assets vs. safe havens: a coherent day for the first time this week

Wednesday's tape was contradictory (gold −1.5% and silver −6% on a hot CPI, bonds up, equities down). Thursday's was coherent: dollar −0.5%, 10Y −10bp, gold +1.5%, silver +2.3%, Bitcoin +0.9% off a new low, equities up ex-tech, VIX −2.5%. That is a "Fed is nearly done" trade, not a haven trade — gold rallied with equities, not against them; the VIX fell as KOSPI hit a circuit breaker. The exception is the energy complex: WTI +3% on US-specific supply (hurricane draws, record exports, CTAs max long) while Brent slipped on the shadow-fleet story — Brent–WTI compressed from ~$11 to ~$8 in a week, meaning the war premium is being taken out of the seaborne benchmark while the US benchmark is being bid on domestic tightness. For cross-asset purposes that matters: the equity market's energy sector fell 1.6% on a +3% WTI day because the market is pricing Brent (sanctions relief, SPR releases, "oil will drop like crazy"), not WTI. Bitcoin's behaviour was the risk-proxy pattern again — new low at the US-Asia handoff (22:30 ET) during the Korean rout, recovery with the dollar's decline — with no haven bid during the Hormuz sinkings. Gold/Bitcoin ratio ~50.7 oz-equivalents, a cycle high.

Liquidity: contracting at the margin where it matters — Asian equity flows, AI credit, crypto ETFs — expanding in Treasuries

Foreigners sold ~$2.7B of Korean equities in one session (₩31.7T in Aug–Sep already); Korean margin debt is at a record; the Japanese 10Y fell 8bp to <2.93% as the Nikkei lost 5% — Asian liquidity is being pulled into JGBs and dollars. US crypto ETFs have given back the entire Oct 13 rebound (−$261M Wednesday, net −$93M over three days; October product outflows ~$1B); the IBIT cost basis at ~$81.5K is now the price. AI credit is the tightest it has been: CoreWeave's unsecured at ~15%, Oracle CDS at a record, and a 10-Q sentence moving a $50B company 15% intraday. Against that, the Treasury market is absorbing liquidity — EPFR's $14B MTD into government bond funds, the three-day rally without coupon supply, the MOVE below 100. The Fed's balance sheet is static (QT ended); the fiscal impulse is the $2.0T deficit; the IEA's 330M-barrel stock release is a real-economy liquidity injection that the US is now trying to supplement with Russian tanker relief. Net: global liquidity is contracting in risk assets and expanding in sovereign duration — the classic late-cycle rotation, with the AI build the first casualty because it is the most levered.

Dollar: the 102.90 top is the regime's tell

The dollar made an 18-month high on the hottest CPI in a year and gave it all back on the hottest PPI in four — the DXY's refusal to extend on inflation is the same information as the long end's refusal to sell: the market believes the Fed's next move is its last. A dollar that peaks at 102.90 with the 10Y at 5.33% and falls to 102.00 with the 10Y at 5.09% is a dollar trading on real growth differentials (Australia's labor crack, Eurozone IP −0.5%, Korea's rout should all be dollar-positive and were not). Implications: (i) gold's $4,066 support held on the dollar's turn — a break of DXY 101.5 targets $4,235; (ii) EM FX ex-Korea is being spared, which is why the IMF's Georgieva "act swiftly on debt" message landed in Bangkok with no EM stress; (iii) for Bitcoin, the dollar's reversal is the only macro input that turned positive this week and it coincided with the $80,150 low holding; (iv) for oil, a weaker dollar is Brent-supportive at the margin and is being overwhelmed by the sanctions-relief headline; (v) the yen is the risk: USD/JPY 158 with Katayama threatening intervention and the BoJ leaning against October — a Nikkei −5% day that does not produce a yen rally is a yen that is being used as the funding leg, and an intervention into a Korean margin cascade is the cross-asset accident.

D Scenario Matrix — Dalio "All Weather" Quadrants

Desk probabilities for the dominant quadrant by Q1 2027 (change vs Oct 15 edition). Current quadrant and trending quadrant highlighted. Thursday's PPI/retail-control pair raised stagflation and cut reflation; the long end's bid and Korea's liquidation kept the deflationary-bust tail bid.

▲ Growth · ▲ Inflation — Reflation36% (−1)

Where the data says we are (nominally): GDPNow 3.6% with real PCE 3.6%, retail sales +6.3% y/y, Empire 25.5, PPI 6.3%, TSMC 2026 growth 44%, China exports +36%. Implications: short duration, long commodities, long cyclicals/financials, long energy equities, short long-dated TIPS breakevens narrowing. Thursday's evidence against: the control group (+0.1%), energy at 80% of PPI, the long end −10bp, copper's third decline. The reflation trade now needs the volume data (Q3 GDP Oct 29, Monday's China GDP) to confirm what the price data is masking.

▼ Growth · ▲ Inflation — Stagflation45% (+2)

Where we are trending: producer prices +1.3% in a month with real sales flat; Philly headline slowing while prices received hit a 17-month high; Australia losing 39k jobs; Eurozone IP down three months; UMich current conditions at a record low; a Fed hiking into it. Implications: long gold (recovered 100% of the CPI loss on a hotter PPI), long energy/refiners, long health care and staples, 2s10s flattener, short consumer discretionary volume names, short long-duration tech funded at junk yields. Thursday's asset signature was this quadrant's: defensives at records, SOX down a seventh day, long end bid, dollar off, metals up, Korea in a circuit breaker.

▲ Growth · ▼ Inflation — Disinflationary growth (Goldilocks)7% (−1)

Requires: Hormuz reopening, Brent <$90, gasoline's October decline ($4.331 from $4.465) propagating to a sub-0.2% October core CPI, and AI capex continuing without the credit stress. Implications: long NDX, long duration, long EM, short gold/oil, short USD. Why it keeps falling: the war produced two sinkings and a MOAB headline in 48 hours; the AI complex delivered record earnings and sold off on financing; the ceasefire market gives a Hormuz agreement by year-end 30%.

▼ Growth · ▼ Inflation — Deflationary bust12% (unch)

Requires: an AI-credit event (CoreWeave/Oracle/neocloud default or forced equity raise), a Korean margin cascade that crosses into Taiwan/Japan, or a Fed over-hike into the control group's +0.1%. Implications: long long-end Treasuries (the trade already working), long USD and JPY, short everything levered to AI capex, short copper, short Brent. Thursday kept the tail bid: KOSPI's worst day since 2020, JGB 10Y −8bp, copper −1.1%, LRCX nine days down. The long end's three-day rally is partly this quadrant being priced.

Assessment. We are in reflation by the nominal data and stagflation by the real data, and Thursday closed the gap further toward stagflation: the PPI said the price shock is still propagating through the pipeline (services +0.8%, transport +3.4%), the control group said the consumer has stopped adding volume, and the market responded with the stagflation-quadrant asset signature while pricing the Fed as nearly done. The trending direction is unchanged — stagflation at 45% is the highest of the cycle — but the path has changed: the market is now pricing a Fed that stops at one more hike, which means the stagflation case rests on the supply shock persisting (Hormuz, diesel deficit into 2H27) rather than on policy error. Catalysts that move the matrix: Warsh (03:30 UTC) — "energy is transitory" pushes toward reflation/Goldilocks pricing and bear-steepens; "expectations at risk" pushes stagflation; TIC (4pm Fri) — foreign selling flips the long end and the deflationary-bust probability rises on the yield spike; China Q3 GDP (Mon) — a real-growth beat is reflation, a price-effect beat is stagflation; the 20Y auction (Oct 21); Q3 GDP + Sept PCE (Oct 29) — the control group's +0.1% versus GDPNow's 3.6% real PCE is the discrepancy the advance print resolves.

E Sector & Theme Spotlight

Momentum / inflection

1. Defensives at records on a 7th SOX loss — the regime rotation is now a trend, not a day. XLV +2.25% to a record (~$178) after +2.44% Wednesday; staples +0.7% after +2.2%; Switzerland's SMI +1.45% Wednesday; Europe's health care +2.3%. Over two sessions the XLV/SOX spread is ~12 points. The rotation is funded by semis (SOX ~−10% MTD, SMH/SOXX eight straight losses, LRCX nine) and AI infrastructure (DELL, VRT, ETN, GEV, NBIS, ORCL all lower again Thursday) and it has broadened to small caps and cyclicals (Russell +1.38%, XLB +1.79%, XLY +1.71%, homebuilders rebounding) as the long end rallies. The tell that this is regime, not noise: it happened on a PPI print that should have hurt defensives' pricing power and helped the inflation-beneficiaries — and the market bought UNH/LLY-type cash flows at 5.09% anyway. UNH/ELV report Oct 21–22; ISRG Tue; JNJ/ABT/TMO/DHR next week — the earnings line is the test.

2. The Hormuz energy complex — refiners at record highs with Brent flat. XLE fell 1.58% on a +3% WTI day because the index is Brent-weighted in sentiment; the refiners (DK target raised to $97, PARR downgraded on valuation after the run) and the integrateds (XOM/COP/EOG/BP/SHEL at 52-week highs) made new highs on the crack spread, not the flat price. Dated Brent ~$130 against futures $106, European diesel futures >2× since January, the IEA's diesel deficit "through 4Q26, no restocking before 2H27," on-land stocks at a decade low, EIA's 8.6M draw with "higher refining activity on the Gulf Coast" — the crack is the asset, and it does not need Brent to rise. The risk is explicit: a US–Russia shadow-fleet deal plus a Hormuz agreement collapses the Dated–futures spread first and the cracks second. Monday's WTI expiry with CTAs at 100% max long is the near-term air pocket.

3. Precious metals — the washout candle. Silver +2.3% from the $54.77 low (−54% from the January ATH as of Wednesday) with SLV +3.39% on the day, G/S off its 73.8 high, gold recovering its full CPI loss on a hotter PPI and a dollar that peaked. Managed-money net long at a cycle low (7,528 contracts), COMEX registered rising, LBMA +1.95% m/m, two consecutive one-basket SLV creations into the −6% day — this is the configuration the desk flagged for a washout bottom, and Thursday was the first confirmation. Platinum $1,628 rebounded from −3.9%. The catalyst remains the Fed's reaction-function peak: October odds at 25–29% after the hottest PPI since 2022 is that peak being priced. NEM reports Oct 22.

Contrarian — Howard Marks' second-level thinking

(a) The KOSPI after a circuit breaker. First-level: Korea's worst day since 2020, Samsung −9.5%, SK Hynix −11.4%, foreigners selling $2.7B, regulator in emergency session, HBM4 equipment slipping, CXMT advancing — stay out. Second-level: the index fell 8% on a day TSMC reported a record quarter, raised 2026 growth to 44%, reaffirmed $60–64B capex, said HPC is 68% of revenue and that supply "still falls well short of demand" — the demand for Korean memory was confirmed by its largest customer's supplier while the financing of the buyers (CoreWeave, Oracle, neoclouds) was repriced. The KOSPI is a levered play on AI financing, and it just priced a credit event that has not happened. The HBM4 "delay" is back-end equipment timing with "no evidence of substantial problems with the mass-production schedule"; CXMT's 4F² DRAM is a disclosure, not a yield. The circuit breaker is a liquidity event in a market with record retail margin — those bottom when the margin calls clear, usually within 2–3 sessions, not on the day. Not yet: the won needs to stop falling first and Friday's open (into Warsh at 12:30 Seoul) is the margin-call session. Entry signal: a KOSPI session that opens down >2% and closes green with foreigners net buyers. The vehicle is EWY or the Samsung GDR, not Hynix.

(b) The bank earnings read is still wrong, and Thursday confirmed it. First-level: BAC's miss Wednesday, USB's revenue miss Thursday, PNC's revenue shortfall, mixed-to-weak — credit cycle turning. Second-level: BNY and PNC beat on EPS; Schwab's revenue +17%; USB raised its FY26 revenue guide; Marsh & McLennan +4.5% on +10% EPS; XLF +1.38% on the day; Zions upgraded to Outperform; and the yield curve bull-flattened, which hurts NII guidance but the stocks rose — because the market is pricing the end of the hiking cycle as the start of the deposit-beta relief. The pair the desk ran Thursday (long MS/GS capital markets vs. BAC/WFC/regionals) paid on both legs. Friday's TFC/MTB/CFG/RF/TRV prints are the regional read.

(c) Defense after a 19% drawdown. First-level: the S&P 1500 A&D index is −19% from its early-August high, LMT −25% from its 2026 high, Barclays initiated NOC at a sell-equivalent and says defense spending has "more downside than upside," Democrats may win the House and scrutinise the war budget, Anduril is building cheaper Patriot/THAAD alternatives, contractor–administration ties are a political liability. Second-level: the index fell 19% during a war in which the US has lost 81 aircraft (CRS), fired down a meaningful share of its interceptor inventory, signed Israel for 12 Apaches and Saudi Arabia for $6.3B of SM-3 IBs, and in which the replacement bill ($1.9–3.3B for aircraft alone) is unenacted in an $87.6B supplemental that passes in either House outcome. Vertical upgraded LMT to buy ("a lot of bad news is priced in"); Citi has catalyst watches on RTX and HII; LMT just committed $300M to Texas missile production; LMT and NOC ticked higher Thursday on a day the index was flat. RTX reports Tuesday (first prime), LMT Thursday. The asymmetry: a ceasefire is already priced (77%) and the replenishment is not. Buy the primes into RTX's print; the midterm overhang is the entry, not the exit.

F Crypto Deep Dive

BTC and ETH — a new low that held the ETF floor, and a recovery on the dollar, not on crypto

Bitcoin's Wednesday-night low of $80,150–80,200 at ~22:30 ET — printed during the KOSPI's limit-down open and the Nikkei's −5% — was the lowest of the drawdown (~35% below the October 2025 ATH) and the fourth test in a week of Glassnode's $80–82K US-ETF cost-basis band (IBIT's mean ~$81,500; ~8% of supply in the cluster). It held, and the recovery to $82.2K (+0.9% 24h) tracked the dollar's reversal from 102.90 and the 10Y's fall to 5.05%, not any crypto-specific flow: ETFs were net sellers Wednesday (−$261.4M, FBTC −$152.7M, IBIT −$110.9M), Thursday's partials are negative, and liquidations ran $480M–$1B over the 24 hours into the low with ~90% of them longs — the leverage was flushed, the spot bid was macro. ETH $2,443 (+0.9%; 7d −1.4%) after a 6.6% intraday fall to $2,362; ETH/BTC 0.0297 is a cycle low; ETHA −3.2% Wednesday with −$109.8M of outflows. Total market cap $2.87T from $2.83T at the low; dominance 57.6% — BTC continues to gain share in a falling tape, the signature of a beta liquidation rather than a Bitcoin-specific loss of confidence. On-chain: the 6–12-month holder cost basis (~$88K) remains the cap; the $83.5–84.5K cluster (867k BTC) is first resistance; below, $80,100 / $79,400 (analyst levels) and $77,200 (Saxo) are the next bands. Sentiment: CoinGecko F&G ~41; CryptoQuant has 84% of 164 tracked analysts bullish (37% in July, highest since August 2025) at a lower low — that is the positioning that produces one more flush, not the bottom. Strategy's week-to-Oct-11 purchase (250 BTC at $86,194) is the smallest in months; Strive's 2,822 BTC (Tuesday) is the only large corporate bid. Targets in the tape: 21Shares $85–90K near term (citing an average +1.2% weekly gain after hot core-CPI prints); Siebert >$175K over "coming quarters" with banks accepting IBIT as loan collateral as the institutional-plumbing argument.

Correlation read. Thirty-day BTC–NDX correlation remains positive and BTC–gold near zero (coefficients not retrieved; the price action is unambiguous): BTC made its low during the Asian equity rout and its recovery with the dollar's decline, while gold rallied with equities Thursday. Bitcoin is trading as a high-beta liquidity asset with an ETF-defined floor, not as a haven and not as a tech proxy — it fell less than the SOX this week (−2.9% 7d vs ~−10% MTD) and more than the S&P.

Regulatory landscape

No new US action Thursday. Live items: SEC's "Regulation Crypto Assets" comment period closes Oct 20; the CLARITY Act market-structure bill remains in Senate Banking with no floor time scheduled before the midterms; the OCC/Fed guidance on bank custody and IBIT-as-collateral (Siebert's reference) is the plumbing story that matters more than the headline bills. Treasury's Thursday sanctions package (16 individuals, 10 entities, an Iraqi bank, Iranian offshore banks, Cuba's BICSA) did not name crypto rails — a notable absence given the Unit-600/IRGC financing network's known use of USDT on Tron; the next OFAC designation that names a Tron address will be the signal that stablecoin enforcement has moved from Russia (Garantex/Grinex precedent) to Iran. UK: no new FCA action; the Miliband–Tehran exchange was about shipping, not finance. Korea's FSC emergency meeting was about equities, but Korean exchanges (Upbit/Bithumb) saw the kimchi premium invert during the rout — a sign of domestic deleveraging across both asset classes.

Institutional flows

BTC ETFs: Oct 13 +$175.7M (the single-day rebound), Oct 14 −$261.4M, Oct 15 −$7.6M partial (Grayscale mini); three-day net −$93.3M; the week to Oct 10 was −$681M; October outflows across BTC/ETH/SOL/HYPE products ~$1B. Fidelity's FBTC has now led outflows on three of the last five sessions after a −$380M week — the wirehouse channel is reducing, which is new; IBIT's outflow is the smaller share. ETH ETFs: Oct 14 −$129.5M (ETHA −$109.8M), Oct 15 −$18.3M partial. XRP ETFs +$0.74M (13-week streak, AUM $1.51B). IBIT closed 46.24 (−1.89%) Wednesday. CME: no fresh basis/OI data retrieved; the annualised basis compressed below 5% last week per prior reads, consistent with the cash-and-carry unwinding that drives the FBTC/IBIT outflows. BlackRock's Q3 digital-asset net flows were +$7.9B (Wednesday's earnings) — the quarter was positive; the month is not. Corporate: Strategy +250 BTC ($86,194), Strive +2,822. Miners sold off hard Wednesday (Cipher −12.4%, IREN −12.2%) as the AI-hosting narrative was repriced with CoreWeave — the miner-as-neocloud trade is the crypto expression of the AI credit cycle.

⚔ War impact on crypto

Digital gold or risk-on proxy? Risk-on proxy, with a macro floor. During the week's escalation (two sinkings, a tanker fire, the MOAB report, Hezbollah readiness) Bitcoin made a new drawdown low and gold recovered to $4,170; since the Hormuz surge began October 1, BTC is roughly −7% and gold roughly −1% net — the ratio moved against Bitcoin in every escalation window. BTC's recovery Thursday came with the dollar's reversal and the long end's rally, i.e., with the Fed trade, not the war trade. BTC vs. gold during the conflict: from the February outbreak gold is +~35% (from ~$3,100) and BTC is −~10% (from ~$91K); gold/BTC ~50.7 oz is a cycle high. ETF flows during escalation/de-escalation: the week's two escalation days (Tue sinking, Thu tanker fire) saw −$261M and a small negative partial; the one de-escalation signal (Netanyahu "not convenient," Trump "went too far") coincided with the +$175.7M day — flows track the ceasefire odds, inversely with escalation, which is the risk-asset pattern. Decoupling? No: BTC's low printed during the KOSPI circuit breaker, the tightest coupling to Asian equity liquidity of the year. Stablecoins as capital flight: aggregate stablecoin supply remains near its record (~$300B+ per the latest trackers; USDT ~62% share); no Thursday print retrieved. Gulf-region USDT premiums were not reported; the UAE's August suspension of Iran trade and flights remains the structural driver of Dubai-routed USDT demand. Country-level adoption: Iran — domestic rial collapse continues to push retail into USDT via Nobitex-type venues; Russia — crude-for-USDT settlement pilots (Rosneft) and the yuan-stablecoin track are now more relevant if Washington eases shadow-fleet sanctions, since the tankers become legal but the payment rails remain sanctioned; Saudi/UAE — no new CBDC or stablecoin step; Korea — the won-stablecoin bill is stalled, and Thursday's rout makes it less likely to move before year-end. Mining: hash rate steady near records (difficulty +5.68% this week); nat gas at $3.22 and Texas curtailment season over keep US mining economics intact; the risk to miners is equity-market (neocloud repricing), not energy. DeFi TVL: no Thursday print retrieved; ETH −8% on the week implies a USD-TVL drawdown of similar size with no protocol stress reported.

Historical analogue. Russia–Ukraine 2022: BTC −~15% in the two weeks before the invasion, +~20% in the two weeks after (the "flight to crypto" narrative), then −60% over the following six months as the Fed hiked into the energy shock. The 2026 pattern rhymes with the second phase: the Fed is hiking into a war-driven supply shock and Bitcoin is behaving as the most liquid, most levered risk asset — the February 2022 bounce never came because the ETF era converts retail "flight" into institutional "redemption." The Israel–Iran June 2025 exchange (−6% / recovery in ten days) is the nearer analogue for an individual escalation week; the difference now is that the Fed's reaction function is tightening, not easing.

China / Russia crypto angle

Russia: the shadow-fleet sanctions-easing study (Reuters, US official) is the most consequential crypto-adjacent headline of the week — if tankers are relieved but SWIFT/correspondent bans are not, USDT-for-barrels settlement becomes more, not less, attractive for Russian sellers and Indian/Chinese buyers; watch for Tron-chain USDT flows to UAE OTC desks to rise if the easing is formalised. No new Rosneft-pilot data this week. China: e-CNY cross-border volumes via mBridge were not updated; the PBoC's October LPR (Tue) is the domestic liquidity read; HSBC's 9–15% China target cut and the CSI 300's −2% say onshore risk appetite is falling, which historically coincides with Hong Kong stablecoin-licence applications slowing. Iran–China–Russia rails: Treasury's Thursday package sanctioned banks (Iraqi, Iranian offshore, Cuban) and not digital-asset entities — either the rails are not being used at scale or enforcement is lagging; the Unit-600 renaming and the "noose is tightening" language suggest the next tranche targets exchanges. Sanctions-evasion evidence this week: none public.

G Conviction Views & Trade Ideas

1. 2s10s flattener / long 10Y vs the consensus short — paying for a fourth session; now a bull-flattener. Hold into Warsh; tighten the stop to 5.40%HIGH

Thesis: the trade has now absorbed the three prints it was built for — CPI headline (0.6%), CPI core (0.33%), PPI (1.3%) — and the long end bought each: 10Y 5.33% → 5.19% → 5.05% low / 5.09% close; 2s10s +44 → +41 → +37 → +32bp. The market has converted the hot-print reaction function into "the Fed's next hike is its last" (October 25–29%), and the front end is anchored by Williams' terminal ("one more in 2026, none in 2027") near the 2Y's 4.95% Wednesday high. Specs remain net short ~2.9M contracts (Oct 6); EPFR's $14B MTD into government bond funds is the other side. The flattener pays on hikes (front end up) and on recession pricing (long end down); Thursday it paid on both ends falling with the long end falling more. Risk/reward: 2s10s +32 → +20bp target (unchanged), stop +50bp (tightened from +55); 10Y 5.09 → 4.95% target (the Sep 29 congestion), stop 5.40% (tightened from 5.45 — three sessions of gains deserve a tighter leash). Sequenced risks: Warsh 03:30 UTC (an "energy is transitory, look through it" framing is the bear-steepener; an "expectations at risk, December" framing is front-end-bearish and flattener-positive); TIC 4pm Fri (a second month of China/Japan net selling after Fed custody −$15.6B is the stop-out path — K3 #5); Monthly Treasury Statement (the FY26 $2.0T is known; a larger-than-CBO October borrowing estimate is not); 20Y auction Oct 21 (first coupon test); CPI/PPI → core-PCE translations Friday morning (a 0.35%+ core PCE nowcast is the front-end risk). Do not add into Warsh; add on a TIC-driven spike that fails above 5.25% by Monday's close. Levels: 10Y 5.05 (Thu low) / 5.09 / 5.15 / 5.19 (Wed close) / 5.30 / 5.33 (Wed high) / 5.365 (Oct 7 high, 24-yr) / 5.40 (stop). 2Y 4.73 (Thu low) / 4.77 / 4.82 / 4.95 (cap). 30Y 5.43 / 5.52 / 5.57 / 5.70. 2s10s +32 / +25 / +20 (target) / +40 / +50 (stop).

Instruments: TY/US futures, 2s10s via TU–TY DV01-neutral, TLT; the bull-flattener favours adding duration in the 10Y rather than the 30Y (30Y supply Oct 21 is the 20Y, next 30Y reopening Nov).

2. Long health care / staples vs. SOX and AI-infra equity — the stagflation rotation, confirmed a second day; complete the second half nowHIGH (raised from MEDIUM)

Thesis: Wednesday's 5.4-point spread (XLV +2.44% vs SOX −4.3%) was followed by Thursday's XLV +2.25% to a record on a seventh straight SOX loss — on a day TSMC delivered the best quarter in its history and raised guidance. The short leg is being repriced on financing (CoreWeave's 10-Q language, LRCX nine days down, Korea's circuit breaker on a $2.7B foreign exit), which does not reverse on good earnings; the long leg is cheap (index <19× forward, XLV breaking a four-month base) and is the natural home of the Beige Book's "flat, high-income-concentrated" consumer. Thursday's TSMC squeeze thesis (buy SOX weakness after a beat) did not materialise — the ADR fell 4% on a beat — which is itself the information: the market is not pricing semis on demand. Risk/reward: XLV/SOXX ratio +12–15% over 4–8 weeks in the stagflation path (45%); −5% if the KOSPI's washout bottom (contrarian (a)) triggers a global semis squeeze. The trade loses in Goldilocks (7%) and in a bust that takes pharma pricing with it (12%); it pays in the other 81%. Sizing: the second half was contingent on TSMC — add it now; full position. Levels: SOX 11,684 / 11,861 / 12,208 / 12,500 (weekly-close stop); XLV $178 record / $172 (50-day). UNH/ELV Oct 21–22, ISRG Tue, LRCX/TXN Oct 21 are the event risks on both legs.

Instruments: long XLV + XLP vs short SOXX/SMH (DV-neutral by beta ~0.6:1); single-name expression long LLY/UNH/ABT vs short LRCX/AMAT/DELL. Avoid NVDA on the short leg (−1.84% Thursday, the least-levered name).

3. Long silver / SLV from the washout — the first confirmation candle; scale inMEDIUM (raised from "not yet")

Thesis: Thursday delivered the configuration the desk required: silver +2.3% (Dec $57.16, spot $57.3–57.6) from the $54.77 2026 low, SLV +3.39% on the day (outperforming the metal — basket creation into the move), G/S ratio off its 73.8 high to 72.7, gold recovering 100% of its CPI loss on a hotter PPI, the dollar reversing from an 18-month high, and the Fed's reaction-function peak being priced (October 25–29% after a 6.3% PPI). Positioning is as clean as it gets: managed-money net long 7,528 (cycle low; Friday's COT shows the Oct 13 week), Jane Street/Citadel/SIG distribution complete two quarters ago, SLV +16.95M shares of net creations since June into a −54% drawdown, COMEX registered rising (103.4 Moz), LBMA +1.95% m/m, no EFP or lease stress. The industrial narrative (solar −19% in 2026) is fully discounted; the monetary narrative (gold +35% since February, silver −54% from the ATH) has the ratio at a level that preceded the last three silver rallies. Risk/reward: entry $56–57.5 (first third), add on a close above $58.50 (Wednesday's pre-CPI level) and again above $60; target the $62–64 September range (+10–12%); stop a daily close below $54.50 (−5%). Risk 1:2.2. What kills it: Warsh "expectations at risk" plus TIC foreign selling → DXY back above 103 and real yields up — silver falls faster than gold; a Korean margin cascade that liquidates all metals longs (Wednesday's −6% was partly that). Levels: $54.77 (low) / $56 / $57.5 / $58.5 / $60 / $62–64 (target). G/S 72.7 / 70 / 65. SLV $51.9 (Thu) / $50 / $56.

Instruments: SLV, SIVR, SI futures (Dec), or the SLV Dec $55/$62 call spread (~1:3) for defined risk into Warsh; miners (PAAS, HL, AG) only after a second green close.

4. Long Brent/WTI distillate crack and refiners / VLCC owners — hold; the shadow-fleet headline is the risk to the flat price, not to the crackMEDIUM

Thesis: unchanged and reinforced: Dated Brent ~$130 vs futures $106, European diesel >2× YTD, IEA diesel deficit through 2H27, on-land stocks lowest since 2016, EIA −8.6M with "higher refining activity on the Gulf Coast," refiners at record highs, USGC–Rotterdam freight −12% w/w (more cargoes moving), war-risk cover at 6–10% of hull. The sanctions-easing study and the IEA's 330M-barrel release attack the flat price of crude, not the distillate crack, which is a refining-capacity and logistics problem the SPR cannot solve. Risk/reward: cracks +10–15% on any escalation (Eurasia's $110–125 band), −10% on a formal Russian-tanker easing + Hormuz framework; refiners (VLO/MPC/PSX/DK) +8–12% / −8%. Reduce VLCC owners (FRO/DHT) tactically into the shadow-fleet decision — relieved Russian tonnage is bearish spot VLCC rates even if bullish volumes. Levels: Brent $104.60 (Thu low) / $105 / $107.15 / $110 / $115; WTI $95 / $97.97 / $100 (Monday's expiry with CTAs 100% long is the air pocket); Brent–WTI $8 (narrowest of the war) — a widening back toward $11 is the Gulf-risk signal.

Instruments: CRAK, VLO/MPC/PSX/DK; gasoil–Brent crack futures; pair long refiners vs short XLE for a flat-price-neutral expression.

5. Bitcoin — stand aside at the floor; buy only a reclaim of $84.5K or a flush to $77–79K with ETF inflowsLOW

Thesis: the $80–82K ETF cost-basis band has held four times in a week, but every test has come with ETF outflows (−$261M Wednesday) and the bounce has come from the dollar, not from crypto demand; 84% analyst bullishness at a lower low is positioning that resolves lower; FBTC-led outflows mean the wirehouse channel is reducing; gold/BTC at a cycle high says the macro haven bid is not coming. Two entries: (i) a daily close above $84.5K (the 867k-BTC cluster) with a positive ETF day — momentum long to $88K (6–12-month basis), stop $82K; (ii) a flush through $80,100/$79,400 to the $77.2K Saxo level that prints an ETF inflow within 48 hours — the capitulation long, stop $74K, target $85K. No position in between. Macro triggers: Warsh dovish-leaning + DXY <101.5 = (i); TIC foreign selling + 10Y >5.30% = (ii). ETH: no view until ETH/BTC stops making lows; the ETHA outflow (−$110M Wednesday) is the larger institutional de-risk.

Instruments: IBIT/FBTC spot; Deribit Oct 16 08:00 UTC expiry max pain and the Oct 31 $80K put skew are the near-term gamma; CME basis <5% annualised keeps cash-and-carry unwinding — do not fight that flow.

6. Long defense primes into RTX (Tue) / LMT (Thu) — the ceasefire is priced, the replenishment is notMEDIUM (new)

Thesis: S&P 1500 A&D −19% from its August high, LMT −25% from its 2026 high, on a midterm/budget-scrutiny/contractor-ties narrative — while the war's materiel bill (81 aircraft, interceptor depletion, $87.6B supplemental, $6.3B SM-3, 12 Apaches) is unenacted and bipartisan. Vertical's LMT upgrade and Citi's RTX/HII catalyst watches are the first sell-side turn; LMT/NOC ticked up Thursday on a flat index. Risk/reward: ITA +10–15% through the supplemental's passage (post-midterm lame duck) vs −8% on a Hormuz agreement plus a Democratic House; the ceasefire's 77% is already in the price. Levels: ITA (verify entry), LMT $400 area (verify), RTX into Tuesday's print; stop a close below the October lows on the index. Pair against JETS/airlines (UAL reports Tuesday) for a war-neutral expression.

Instruments: ITA, LMT, RTX, NOC, HII; avoid BA (commercial-aero exposure to fuel). Event risk: Barclays' NOC sell, Anduril's Patriot/THAAD alternative headlines, Oct 27 Israeli election.

H Risk Radar

Top 3 tail risks

1. The long-end rally meets its two tests in 16 hours: Warsh (03:30 UTC) and TIC (20:00 UTC)

The 10Y has rallied 28bp from Wednesday's 5.33% high in two sessions on hot inflation data — that is a short squeeze layered on a growth-fear bid, and it has not yet faced a hawkish Chair or a foreign-selling print. Warsh's prior framing (inflation "will not return to target on its own," no forward guidance) delivered with December intent is flattener-friendly; an explicit "look through energy, October is live either way" with a term-premium nod is the bear-steepener. August TIC after Fed custody holdings fell $15.6B: a second consecutive month of China/Japan net selling flips K3 #5 to RED, and the 10Y back above 5.19% (Wednesday's close) reverses the week's rotation — homebuilders, small caps and XLV give back Thursday, and the "Fed is nearly done" trade in gold/silver/BTC unwinds. Probability of a 10Y close >5.25% by Monday: 25%.

2. Korea's circuit breaker becomes a margin cascade — and the yen is the transmission

KOSPI −8.02% with a level-one halt, foreigners −$2.7B, household margin debt at a record, the FSC in emergency session, and the won weakening: Friday's open (12:30 Seoul = Warsh's Q&A window) is the forced-selling session. If Samsung/Hynix gap down again, the path is Taiex → Nikkei → US semis pre-market → USD/JPY, where Katayama has said she is "ready to act." A yen intervention into an Asian equity liquidation is the cross-asset accident: it unwinds the carry that funds EM and crypto longs, and it would hit during US pre-market with the Fed in blackout from Saturday. The AI credit layer is the fundamental: a CoreWeave or Oracle financing headline on a day Korea is in a halt turns a geographic repricing into a global one. Probability KOSPI closes Friday down another >3%: 35%; probability of a BoJ/MoF intervention within a week: 20%.

3. Escalation past the midterm pause — two sinkings, a tanker fire, a MOAB in the plans, Hezbollah on readiness

The ceasefire market (77% through the midterms) is pricing Trump's stated pause; the belligerents are not: Iran has sunk two ships in 48 hours, set a tanker ablaze inside its declared prohibited zone, ordered Hezbollah to full readiness and (per WSJ) is "preparing its population for renewed war in the coming weeks"; the US has two carriers in the Arabian Sea, a MOAB in the strike package, France deploying to Saudi Arabia, and a president saying "that's going to end very soon." The accident path is a US-flagged or US-crewed vessel hit, or a Houthi strike with mass casualties at a Gulf airport (Riyadh: 17 killed, 333 injured Oct 7–11), forcing a response before November 3. Asset path: Brent to Eurasia's $110–125 band, Brent–WTI back to $11+, the 10Y down initially (haven) then up (fiscal), gold +5%, BTC −10%, defense +8%, airlines −10%. Probability of US strikes on Iranian territory before Nov 3: 25% (from 22%).

What would change the base case

The base case (stagflation vector 45%, Fed one more hike then hold, 10Y range 4.95–5.35%, Brent $100–110, BTC $77–88K) changes on: (i) a formal US–Russia shadow-fleet easing plus a Hormuz framework — Brent <$95, the war premium halves, headline inflation rolls over by December, the Fed's December hike is priced out, Goldilocks probability triples and the 2s10s flattener should be closed; (ii) Warsh explicitly endorsing October — the 2Y breaks 4.95%, the flattener accelerates, equities' rotation breaks (defensives still win), silver's bottom is delayed a month; (iii) an AI-credit default — the deflationary-bust quadrant doubles, the 10Y breaks 4.90%, long-end longs become the only trade, and the health care/SOX pair gains on the short leg while losing on multiple compression of the long leg; (iv) a Chinese real-growth beat Monday (Q3 GDP >4.7% with retail sales and FAI confirming) — reflation regains the lead, copper reverses, EM and KOSPI bottom; (v) October CPI nowcast turning negative on energy (gasoline $4.331 → <$4.20) — the inflation channel of the stagflation case fades and the policy-error channel takes over.

Black swans on peripheral vision

Taiwan opportunistic window: three US carriers committed to or en route to CENTCOM (Bush, Washington, Roosevelt transiting), the Reagan just deployed, Lincoln and Nimitz in post-deployment maintenance; the Taiex −3% and TSMC −2% local on a record quarter is the market's own distraction. No PLA/PLAN anomaly reported Thursday. A PLA exercise announcement during the Israeli election week (Oct 27) with the US fleet in the Arabian Sea is the scenario.
Russia second front / Black Sea spillover: two chemical tankers on fire in Romanian waters after Russian drones strayed, seven crew missing — a NATO-member maritime incident on the same day as the Hormuz sinkings; Zelensky resuming refinery strikes (Ryazan 400 kb/d hit) while Washington studies Russian tanker relief. The swan is a NATO Article 4 call that coincides with a Hormuz escalation — two maritime chokepoints under fire with one US fleet.
Yen intervention into a Korean margin cascade (Risk 2's tail): a disorderly USD/JPY move with the Fed in blackout.
Sovereign term-premium contagion from France: WGC flags French OAT term premia at a 25-year high; Moody's France review Oct 23; a downgrade into a US TIC foreign-selling print is the global long-end scenario.
Saudi infrastructure: the Aramco Dhahran tower hit (top floors damaged, no production impact), France deploying to protect oil facilities, Houthis warning Saudi airspace "unsafe" — a strike on Abqaiq-class processing is the $125+ scenario; Polymarket crude ATH by Dec 31: 11%.
US fiscal: Friday's Monthly Treasury Statement closes FY2026 at ~$2.0T; the $87.6B supplemental, an October borrowing estimate above CBO, or a rating-agency comment on war costs is K3 #7/#8's trigger.

J Institutional Holders — BTC, GLD, SLV ETF Changes

Latest full 13F quarter: Q2 2026 (period Jun 30, filed by Aug 14). Q3 13Fs (period Sep 30) due Nov 16 — early filers as of Oct 15 are unchanged from Wednesday's read (SLV 75 filings / 1.13M sh; GLD 181 / $538M; IBIT 90+; FBTC 18); no Jane Street, Citadel, Susquehanna, Morgan Stanley, UBS, BofA, Goldman, JPM, BlackRock, Millennium, Brevan, Capula, Mubadala or state-pension Q3 filing yet. Share counts from EDGAR-parsed data (13f.info); options are notional shares. Thursday fund-level data (iShares/SSGA NAV, shares, ounces) had not been published at compile — the Oct 14 figures below are the latest official prints; Thursday's ETF price moves are from the close.

SLV — iShares Silver Trust

Fund data (Oct 14, latest official) + Thursday's tape

Net assets $28.90B (−$829M d/d), shares 547.25M (+450,000 — the second consecutive one-basket creation into the decline), NAV $52.8152 (−2.86%, struck pre-CPI); ounces ~494.2M / ~15,370t. Since Jun 30 (479.8M oz / 530.3M sh): +14.0M oz (+2.9%) and +16.95M shares (+3.2%) of net creations with silver −54% from the January ATH. Thursday: SLV +3.39% to $51.92, outperforming spot silver (+2.0–2.3%) — the premium-to-NAV widening that accompanies basket creation; whether a third basket was created into the rebound is the Friday-morning check (iShares posts T+1). Thursday's NAV carries Wednesday's post-CPI −5–6% move and Thursday's +2% recovery. Q2 13F aggregate 145.7M shares ($7.77B), −5.2% q/q, 107 new / 391 exits, top-10 concentration 44.7%. COT (Oct 6 positions): managed-money net long 7,528 (−86 w/w; long 16,457 / short 8,929), OI 105,130; legacy non-commercial net 7,608; producer/merchant −16,253; swap dealers −25,339; next report Fri Oct 16 (Oct 13 positions — the pre-CPI week). Physical: COMEX registered 103.4 Moz (+1.0% 7d; +7.8% 30d), eligible 228.7 Moz, total 332.0 Moz; LBMA September silver 28,985t (+1.95% m/m); no lease-rate or EFP stress reported. India: August imports 15.5 Moz (+36% y/y), MCX premium ~17%, Dhanteras Nov 6; Shanghai premium ~14.7% gross. Jane Street: no silver/SLV news; the only live item is India's SAT ruling (Oct 21) on evidence access in SEBI's ₹4,843 crore index-manipulation case — unrelated to silver.

Holder	Q2 2026 shares	q/q change	Signal
Morgan Stanley	13,473,698 ($720M)	+1,248,173 (+10.2%)	#1 holder; Q4'25 was 18.07M — rebuilt after a Q1 cut. The wirehouse bid is the one still creating baskets (two consecutive one-basket days into the CPI rout).
UBS	10,475,933	+804,961 (+8.3%)	Accumulating; calls +42%, puts −21%.
Bank of America	9,174,729	+676,873 (+8.0%)	Accumulating.
Jane Street	6,683,383 ($357M)	−2,153,498 (−24.4%)	Q4'25 20,672,537 ($1.33B) → Q1 8,836,881 → Q2 6,683,383: −68% in two quarters from the record position that spawned the March manipulation narrative. Options: puts 35.1M (−22%), calls 32.2M (−42%). No regulator has announced a probe; nothing new this week. Distribution complete at the market-maker level; Q3 filing (Nov 16) is the next read — desk base case a further cut to <5M shares.
Goldman Sachs	4,130,012	+1,678,374 (+68.5%)	Added shares while flipping options to puts (puts +44%, calls −44%) — a hedged long.
JPMorgan (custodian)	2,622,817	+911,096 (+53.2%)	Q4'25 1.33M → roughly doubled since year-end.
Schonfeld / HRT / Marshall Wace	1.18M / 1.19M / 0.83M	+180% / +76% / +109%	Multi-strats and HFT adding into the drawdown.
Bank of Montreal	995,013	−1,665,363 (−62.6%)	Largest bank cut.
Citadel / Susquehanna	112,395 / 129,444	−95% / −98%	Near-full exits from stock while keeping options (SIG calls 47.8M / puts 26.7M — still the largest SLV options book; Citadel calls 31.3M / puts 15.0M).
Saudi Central Bank (SAMA)	621,400 ($31.6M)	unchanged (3 qtrs)	Official-sector silver line held through the crash, the Riyadh strikes and the Aramco hit.
Millennium	193,249	−34%	Calls 1,670,300 vs 88,500 (+1,787%) and puts +115% — option-ised.
500%+ Quadrature / TD Bank / Krilogy (Q3)	362,538 / 245,373 / 201,515	+1,270% / +667% / +2,435%	Flagged per rule; all sub-$25M — quant/dealer inventory and a single RIA, not manipulation-scale.

Read: Q2 was the quarter the market-makers de-risked and the wirehouses added; Q3's net creations (+16.95M shares) and the two consecutive one-basket creations on Oct 13–14 — into a −1.8% and then a −6.1% day — survived the worst two-session fall since January, and Thursday's +3.39% SLV on a +2.3% metal says the creation bid continued into the rebound. Positioning is clean (MM net long at the cycle low; Friday's COT confirms or not), physical is loose (registered rising, LBMA +1.95%, no EFP stress), and the price made its lower low on the Fed, not on silver. That is the washout-bottom configuration, and Thursday was its first confirming candle (Trade 3). Watch Friday's COT, Thursday's SLV NAV/share count (T+1) and whether a third basket printed.

GLD — SPDR Gold Shares (and the official sector)

Fund (SSGA, Oct 13, latest official): AUM $141.30B, shares 369.70M (−0.30M ≈ −0.86t redeemed), NAV $382.20, LBMA PM $4,169.50; thevaultreport ~1,054t. Thursday: GLD +1.79% to $382.71 — back to the Oct 13 NAV in price terms; the ~$150B AUM milestone needs gold ~$4,400 at current shares. IAU (Oct 13): $62.13B / 792.85M sh / 463.51t; Oct 14: 792.1M sh (−0.75M ≈ −0.44t). GLDM (Oct 13): $30.95B / 375.35M sh / ~231t. Flows (through Oct 13): GLD −22,806 oz MTD (−$100.5M; the first GLD redemption of October on the latest day), IAU +13,995 oz, GLDM +77,230 oz (+$321.6M), AAAU −4,591 oz; global +331,073 oz (+$1.38B, ≈10.3t) MTD — Asia +161,604 oz (Huaan Yifu +96,987), EMEA +105,186, Americas +64,283. The US large funds are net redeeming while Asia and GLDM (the retail wrapper) add — the same holder rotation as silver, one step behind. WGC (Oct 13 report): record Q3 ETF demand ($31B / +211t; holdings 4,256t), gold −4.2% YTD, ETF inflows "slowed last week," French term premia at the highest since the early 2000s as the sovereign-risk driver, China's 2026 gold imports at a record. Top Q2 13F GLD holders (unchanged): Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, UBS, Goldman, JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Northern Trust, BlackRock advisors; Alaska Permanent Fund's IAUM add (Oct 13) is the only public-fund Q3 filing. Official sector / PBoC / CBR: PBoC's reported reserve additions continued through September (eleventh straight month per prior reads); CBR holdings static by ounces, rising by value; no new October data Thursday. SAMA's SLV line is the only official-sector silver position on file. Saxo levels: $4,066 support / $4,235 resistance; 200-DMA ~$4,510–4,540.

Cumulative: October product outflows across BTC/ETH/SOL/HYPE ~$1B; YTD net BTC-ETF inflows remain positive but the 2026 trajectory has flattened since the October 2025 peak. 13F: Q2 2026 institutional IBIT holders (Goldman, Jane Street, Millennium, Brevan, Capula, Mubadala, Wisconsin/Michigan pensions) unchanged; Q3 early filings are small RIAs (Stegent 49,336 sh). Signal: the FBTC-led pattern says the advisor/wirehouse channel — the holder base that absorbed 2025's supply — is net reducing into the ETF cost basis; IBIT's smaller outflows and BlackRock's +$7.9B Q3 digital-asset line say the institutional allocator is slower to move. Until a two-day inflow sequence prints at or below $82K, the floor is a level, not a bid.

ETH ETFs: Oct 13 +$24.8M; Oct 14 −$129.5M (ETHA −$109.8M, ETH mini −$18.8M, EZET −$0.9M); Oct 15 partial −$18.3M (ETHE). ETHA at 54.89 (−3.16% Wed). The institutional ETH de-risk is larger relative to AUM than Bitcoin's.

K Military Force Analysis & Market Impact — Iran War Day 231

K1) Force Comparison Dashboard — Primary Belligerents

US forces in / en route to CENTCOM

Carriers — two in theater: USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77, CSG-10, CVW-7; ~5,000 personnel; DDGs Donald Cook, Ross) "returned to the Arabian Sea" (CENTCOM Thursday) after departing Phuket Oct 9; USS George Washington (CVN-73, CVW-5 with F-35C; DDG Shoup) in the Arabian Sea on "operations against Iran." Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71, CSG-9: CVW-11, DDGs Paul Hamilton, Decatur, CG Chosin, MUSV Seahawk) transiting the Pacific westward — a third carrier for late October/November. Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) departed San Diego Oct 7. Lincoln (San Diego Oct 8 after >300 days) and Nimitz (Norfolk Oct 8) in post-deployment stand-down. ARGs: Boxer + 11th MEU in the Arabian Sea since March; Makin Island + 13th MEU (F-35B) westbound from Pearl Harbor (Oct 12); Tripoli in Sasebo. Independent deployers in region: Milius, John Paul Jones, Rafael Peralta, John Finn, ESB Miguel Keith, Carl M. Levin; Indian Ocean: Mustin, CG Princeton, Higgins, Wayne E. Meyer, Michael Murphy, Delbert D. Black; Red Sea: Jason Dunham, Gonzalez; Med: Roosevelt, Oscar Austin. Allies: France began deploying military assets to Saudi Arabia (Foreign Ministry, Thursday) to protect oil facilities; Macron's Gulf tour Oct 19–21. CENTCOM (Thu): blockade "in full effect"; >40 commercial ships transited Hormuz in 24 hours under US/partner protection; GFS Pride confirmed hit by an IRGC projectile and sunk under tow; rejected Iranian claims of "hundreds" of US troops killed in Jordan. Strike options (CNN, Thu): drafted plans include the GBU-43/B MOAB (~11t, 18,700 lb blast yield) against Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear sites if combat resumes; officials "questioned whether it would achieve US goals" — the MOAB is a surface-blast weapon, not a penetrator (the GBU-57 MOP was the June 2025 Fordow weapon). Casualties: DoD 21 KIA / 865 WIA at last update (Oct 10); CENTCOM Thursday reiterated three KIA in July; no new US casualties reported. Aircraft: CRS (Oct 5) 81 lost/damaged, replacement $1.9–3.3B; no Thursday losses reported.

Iran & proxies

Navy / strait: Iran's army said a "non-compliant" oil tanker with AIS off caught fire "a few hours" earlier in the Gulf of Oman inside the IRGC's declared prohibited zone (set in September across part of the Sea of Oman and Arabian Sea); cause unstated, CENTCOM silent, unverified; a pro-IRGC outlet claimed missiles hit "several vessels." Iranian state media: Hormuz "will remain closed" until Iran's conditions are met; Iran claims control of the strait and a mine strike on GFS Pride (Singapore MPA and CENTCOM: a projectile). Iranian "operational units" deployed east of Hormuz for "real-time surveillance" (Oct 13); IRGC uses unarmed dhow spotters after US strikes degraded coastal radar (US official; one dhow destroyed Oct 6). IRGC Navy chief Ozmaei: "impatient to sink American warships." Tally: IMO 106 confirmed incidents and 24 seafarer deaths since February; October: FT 24 vessels attacked, UKMTO >20, Maritime Executive six Sunday and four Tuesday; two total losses this week (GFS Pride, Cape Dao — the war's second and third sinkings); Windward: ~1 in 50 transiting ships hit in Q3. Posture: WSJ — Iran told regional officials it will retaliate "across the Middle East" to any new US strike and is preparing its population for renewed war "in the coming weeks"; Quds Force overseas unit renamed "Unit 600"; Western officials: ballistic-missile stocks "well-stocked"; nuclear sites bermed against ground raid. Thursday's escalation signal: Iran instructed Hezbollah to raise readiness and summoned all salaried full-time members (JPost/regional reports) — the first explicit proxy-mobilisation order since the June Lebanon exchange; Rubio–Aoun call on seizing "hundreds of kilograms" of Hezbollah explosives. Houthis: ballistic missiles on Aden's presidential palace (2–5 killed); warning that Saudi airspace and airports "remain unsafe"; Riyadh KKIA closed to 2100 GMT Oct 17; Oct 7–11 Riyadh attacks 17 killed / 333 injured; >3,000 Saudi flights cancelled in a week; Yemen's army claims 700 Houthis killed in 24 hours (unverified). Syria: Jbessa gas export pipeline hit (SANA). Sanctions: Treasury — 16 individuals, 10 entities (Iraqi bank, Iranian offshore banks); State — Cuba's BICSA over Karafarin Bank dealings; Bessent: "the noose is tightening around Iran's economy." Diplomacy: Tehran's reply to the US framework still undelivered; Ghalibaf "neither endless war nor prolonged talks"; Netanyahu: a pre-emptive strike before Oct 27 "not convenient," but warns of "indications" of planned attacks; Iran's FM accused the UK of a "grotesque reversal of victim and aggressor." Polymarket: Araghchi–US meeting by Dec 31 36%, Witkoff 35%.

Key asymmetries

US advantages: two carriers in the Arabian Sea with a third transiting; air/naval superiority confirmed by Iran's reliance on dhow spotters and unverified "warship disabled" claims; the blockade holds (Kpler crude exports 8.5 mb/d, 40% below pre-war; 40% of Gulf crude now bypassing by pipeline); sanctions reach extending to Iraqi and Cuban banks; allied reinforcement (France to Saudi). Iranian advantages: geography — two sinkings and a tanker fire in 48 hours with projectiles and (claimed) mines against a 30× war-risk premium and ~170 ships anchored off Dubai; asymmetric cost (a $10–20M war-risk premium per VLCC voyage against a sub-$1M projectile); proxy depth — Hezbollah now ordered to readiness, Houthis closing Riyadh's airport for a tenth day, Iraqi proxies against refineries; the political clock — Trump's midterm pause is public and Tehran has 18 days to extract terms while US strikes are suspended; the IRGC's "coordinated response to a third US breach" framing gives it escalation initiative within the ceasefire's letter. War cost tracker: daily US operating cost ~$150–250M (desk estimate from prior CRS/CBO ranges); cumulative direct cost >$40B since February excluding munitions replacement; $87.6B supplemental unenacted; interceptor depletion the binding constraint (not retrieved this week); FY2026 deficit ~$2.0T with net interest ~$1.14T — the war is being financed at 5.1–5.4% long rates. Last 24–48h developments: Bush CSG back in the Arabian Sea (two carriers); MOAB in the strike package (CNN); GFS Pride and Cape Dao sunk; tanker fire in the Gulf of Oman; Hezbollah readiness order; France deploying to Saudi Arabia; Treasury sanctions tranche; Houthi strike on Aden; Trump "we've now taken the nuclear weapon away from Iran… oil prices will drop like crazy"; Netanyahu "not convenient" before Oct 27; US studying Russian shadow-fleet sanctions relief (supply-side de-escalation on the oil market while the military picture escalates).

K2) Stock Market War Impact Analysis

Bucket	Thursday	Since Oct 1 Hormuz surge	Read
Beneficiaries — Energy / refiners	XLE −1.58% (Brent flat); refiners record highs; XOM/COP/EOG/BP/SHEL 52-wk highs	Refiners +, integrateds +, XLE mixed	The crack, not the flat price, is the war trade; XLE fell on the shadow-fleet headline while WTI rose 3% on US supply.
Beneficiaries — Defense / aerospace	LMT/NOC "ticked higher"; index flat; GE Aerospace weak on fuel	S&P 1500 A&D −19% from early-Aug high; LMT −25% from 2026 high	The anomaly of the war: primes falling during an active conflict on midterm/budget/Anduril fears. Vertical LMT buy; Citi RTX/HII catalyst watch; Barclays NOC sell. RTX Tue, LMT Thu (Trade 6).
Beneficiaries — Shipping / tankers	Baltic Dry −4.57% (2,545); Capesize −8.5%; VLCC rates elevated; USGC–Rotterdam freight −12% w/w	Tankers +, dry bulk −	Shadow-fleet relief is bearish spot VLCC rates (more legal tonnage) — reduce FRO/DHT tactically; dry bulk is pricing the Korean/Chinese growth scare.
Beneficiaries — Cyber / networks	Ericsson +12% (Middle East/Asia network demand); cyber names not retrieved	+	Gulf network hardening is a real order flow (Ericsson cited Middle East explicitly).
Sufferers — Airlines / travel	JETS not retrieved (−3.6% Wed); >3,000 Saudi flights cancelled; Etihad/flydubai/Emirates Riyadh cancellations to Oct 19; SWISS/Austrian/Eurowings to Abu Dhabi suspended to Oct 24	−−	UAL Tuesday is the war-cost guide; jet fuel +, Gulf routes closed, Riyadh airport shut ten days.
Sufferers — Consumer discretionary volume / retail	XLY +1.71% (rotation, lower yields); NKE +5%; WMT upgraded; control group +0.1%	Mixed	Price beats volume: retail sales +6.3% y/y nominal with ex-gas +0.2% m/m. Discretionary rallied on rates, not on demand.
Sufferers — Semis / AI infra (war-adjacent via rates and Korea)	SOX 7th straight loss; KOSPI −8%; TSM ADR −4% on a record quarter; LRCX 9 straight	SOX ~−10% MTD	The war's second-order channel: higher long rates → AI-financing repricing → Korea/Taiwan liquidation.

Historical pattern. Gulf War 1990–91: S&P −16% from the August invasion to the October 1990 low, +20% within three months of Desert Storm's start (Jan 17, 1991) — "sell the build-up, buy the invasion." Iraq 2003: −14% into the March 12 low, +30% over the following nine months. Libya 2011: no measurable index effect (−6% in March on Japan, not Libya). Israel–Iran June 2025: −2% / recovered in six sessions. 2026 Iran war: S&P 500 at 7,744 is 0.96% below its Oct 6 record and +13.1% YTD on Day 231 of the conflict — the smallest war drawdown in the modern record, because the shock has been absorbed by the energy complex (Brent +70% YTD), the bond market (10Y 24-year high Oct 7) and foreign equity markets (KOSPI −16% from its peak ten days ago) rather than by US large caps. The historical template says US equities do not fall on the war; they fall on the Fed's response to the war's inflation — 1990's recession was a Fed-and-oil recession. That is the stagflation quadrant's 45%.

K3) Treasury Yield Spike Indicators — Traffic Light Dashboard

#	Indicator	Status	Reading
1	War spending fiscal blowout (>$50B/qtr unbudgeted → RED)	AMBER	$87.6B supplemental unenacted; direct war cost >$40B cumulative; FY2026 deficit ~$2.0T (+$218B y/y), net interest ~$1.14T. Friday's Monthly Treasury Statement makes FY26 official; the October borrowing estimate is the next tell. Not yet RED because the supplemental is not appropriated.
2	CPI re-acceleration (>0.4% m/m energy-led → RED)	RED	Sept CPI +0.6% m/m (gasoline +9.1%), core +0.33%; PPI +1.3% m/m, energy >80%. Triggered Wednesday, confirmed at the producer level Thursday. Mitigant: EIA gasoline $4.331 (Oct 12) from $4.465 — October's energy contribution turns negative if sustained; Cleveland's October CPI nowcast +0.28%.
3	Term premium expansion (ACM)	AMBER	ACM 10Y term premium elevated (~+0.9–1.0% at last read); the 10Y −28bp from Wednesday's high with the 2Y −18bp implies the term premium compressed this week. WGC flags French term premia at a 25-year high — the contagion channel. Remains AMBER on level, improving on direction.
4	Treasury auction demand (10Y/30Y bid-to-cover)	GREEN	No coupon supply since Oct 8; 17-wk bill (Wed) BTC 2.79, indirects 54.2% — in line. The 20Y (Oct 21) and 5Y TIPS (Oct 22) are the first tests after the three-day rally. A 20Y tail at 5.50%+ flips to AMBER.
5	Foreign holder selling (TIC Japan/China)	AMBER	July: China $618.0B, Japan $1,103.9B; Fed custody holdings −$15.6B in the latest week. August TIC prints Friday 4pm. A second month of net selling by either → RED and the flattener's stop-out path.
6	Fed rhetoric shift (tolerating higher inflation → AMBER)	AMBER	Split: Hammack "more restraint is needed," Goolsbee "must be addressed," Williams "one more"; vs Bowman/Daly "no urgency" and market pricing October at 25–29% after a 6.3% PPI. Not tolerance by the Fed; tolerance by the market's read of the Fed. Warsh at 03:30 UTC resolves the colour.
7	Fiscal deficit trajectory (CBO, supplementals)	RED	CBO FY2026 ~$2.0T; outlays +6%; net interest > defense and Medicare; war supplemental pending; no offsets proposed. Structural RED.
8	Credit rating watch	GREEN	No new US sovereign comment this week. Moody's France review Oct 23 is the sovereign-contagion watch; WGC's term-premium note is market, not agency.
9	2s10s bear steepening	GREEN	2s10s +32bp from +44 Monday — bull-flattening (long end rallying faster than the front end falls). The opposite of the spike signature. Flips to AMBER on a 10Y close >5.25% with the 2Y <4.85%.
10	MOVE Index (>120 → RED)	GREEN	MOVE 99.07 (Wed, −2%); Thursday not retrieved but a 10bp rally with the 2Y −5bp is low-vol-consistent. Well below 120.

Summary light: AMBER — 2 RED (CPI re-acceleration, fiscal trajectory), 4 AMBER (war spending, term premium, foreign selling, Fed rhetoric), 4 GREEN. Unchanged from Wednesday in count; the direction improved (term premium compressing, curve bull-flattening, MOVE <100) while the level risk concentrated into one print: Friday's TIC. A RED on #5 takes the count to 3 RED / 3 AMBER and the summary to the RED threshold's doorstep; the 10Y's 5.33% Wednesday high is the level that converts the three-day rally into the spike this dashboard exists to flag.

K4) Commodity War Premium Analysis

Brent war premium

~$33

$105.92 vs $72.48 pre-war (Feb)

Dated Brent ~$130 (physical premium ~$24 over futures). Brent −0.1% Thu on the shadow-fleet study; WTI +3% on EIA −8.6M; Brent–WTI $8 (from $11) — the war premium is being taken out of the seaborne benchmark while US tightness bids WTI. Hormuz traffic: CENTCOM >40 commercial transits/24h; straits.live 2 transits Oct 11 vs ~85/day pre-crisis; Windward 13 on Oct 4 vs ~135; ~170 ships anchored off Dubai; 45 AIS-dark tankers (7-day avg 69). Kpler crude exports 8.5 mb/d (week to Oct 12; ~40% below pre-war); IEA Hormuz flows 10.9 mb/d / Gulf crude exports 13.9 mb/d (75% of pre-war). Bypass: Petroline 7.0 mb/d capacity at 38%, ADCOP 1.5 mb/d at 100%, Goreh–Jask 350 kb/d. Scenarios: Eurasia $110–125 on resumed fighting; Goldman/JPM bands unchanged ($95–130 per prior reads); Polymarket crude ATH by Dec 31 11%. Supply disruption duration: IEA diesel deficit through 4Q26, "no restocking before 2H27"; 2027 demand still 620 kb/d below 2025. Iraq: production status not updated Thursday (Iraqi-proxy refinery strikes cited by Hassett Wednesday; Treasury sanctioned an Iraqi bank Thursday). Emergency stocks: IEA ~330M bbl released, ~100M to come; US "unhappy" with timing — hence the Russian-tanker study.

Gold & Silver safe-haven read

G/Oil 39.4

Gold ~7.8% below 200-DMA · G/S 72.7

Gold $4,170 (+1.5%) recovered its full CPI loss on a hotter PPI — the first session this week where gold rallied on Fed-peak pricing rather than fell on hike pricing; Saxo $4,066 / $4,235. Gold/oil 39.4 vs ~75 pre-war: still an energy shock, not a monetary one. Silver: $57.16 (+2.3%) from the $54.77 low; industrial demand discounted (solar −19% in 2026), monetary demand returning as the ratio turns; SLV +3.39% with basket creation; COMEX registered 103.4 Moz rising; India August imports 15.5 Moz. Central banks: WGC — China's 2026 gold imports at a record, PBoC buying continuing; no new October official-sector print; SAMA's SLV line unchanged. Flows: US large gold ETFs net redeeming (GLD −22.8k oz MTD) while Asia/GLDM add; WGC Q3 record $31B / +211t. Gold +~35% since the February outbreak; gold/BTC ~50.7 oz (cycle high).

Energy infrastructure damage tracker

Aramco Dhahran HQ

Top 3 floors damaged · no production impact

Hit this week: Aramco Dhahran tower (Houthi, Wed; administrative, no barrels offline); Riyadh KKIA (Oct 7–11; aviation, not oil); Jbessa gas export pipeline, NE Syria (Thu, fire; small volume); Russia's Ryazan refinery 400 kb/d (Ukrainian drones, Wed–Thu; partial outage, repair weeks); Romanian Black Sea chemical tankers (Russian drones strayed). Cumulative barrels offline (desk): Gulf crude exports −4.6 mb/d vs pre-war (IEA 13.9 vs 18.5), of which Hormuz-closure effect ~4 mb/d net of bypass, physical damage <0.5 mb/d (Iraqi-proxy refinery hits, Saudi pipeline attack cited Wednesday). At risk: Abqaiq/Ras Tanura (Houthi range; France deploying to protect), Fujairah (ADCOP terminal at 100% utilisation — single point of failure for the UAE bypass), Yanbu (Petroline at 38% — spare capacity exists if Red Sea stays open; Bab el-Mandeb closed by Dec 31: 16% on Polymarket). Timeline to repair: Dhahran n/a; Ryazan 2–6 weeks; no major Gulf processing facility currently offline.

K5) War Impact on Bitcoin & Crypto Markets

Escalation vs. de-escalation phases: since the October 1 Hormuz surge BTC is roughly −7% (from ~$88K) and made its cycle low ($80,150) during Wednesday night's escalation cluster (GFS Pride confirmed sunk, Cape Dao sinking, Hezbollah readiness, MOAB report) and the Korean liquidation; the only +$175M ETF day coincided with the de-escalation signals (Netanyahu "not convenient," Trump "went too far"). Correlation: risk-on — BTC tracks the dollar and Asian equity liquidity, not gold; gold/BTC at a cycle high; BTC–S&P positive, BTC–gold ~0 (coefficients not retrieved). Sanctions evasion: Treasury's Thursday tranche named banks, not digital-asset entities; Unit-600/IRGC USDT-on-Tron use is documented but no new designation; the shadow-fleet sanctions study makes USDT-for-barrels more relevant for Russia if tankers are relieved but payment rails are not. Stablecoins: aggregate supply near record (~$300B+; USDT ~62%); no Thursday print; Dubai-routed USDT demand structurally supported by the UAE's Iran trade suspension. Mining: hash rate near records, difficulty +5.68%; nat gas $3.22 — no energy-cost stress; miner equities are trading as AI-hosting credit proxies (Cipher/IREN −12% Wednesday). DeFi TVL: not retrieved; ETH −8% w/w implies a proportional USD drawdown, no protocol stress. Historical: Russia–Ukraine 2022 (−15% pre, +20% post, −60% over six months as the Fed hiked into the energy shock) — the 2026 tape is in the third phase; June 2025 Israel–Iran (−6%, recovered in ten days) is the per-escalation analogue. Positioning read: 84% analyst bullishness at a lower low, FBTC-led outflows, CME basis <5% — a war de-escalation would produce a relief rally to $84.5–88K that the positioning would sell into; an escalation produces the $77–79K flush that is the better entry (Trade 5).

Ceasefire holds through the midterms (Nov 3)

Desk 72% (from 74%)Polymarket 77% (−1) · through Oct 31 80% · Oct 24 87% · Oct 17 93%

Signals to watch: Tehran's formal reply to the US framework (undelivered); whether CENTCOM's ">40 ships/24h" holds against Iran's "will remain closed"; a third sinking; Warsh/Trump oil commentary ("drop like crazy" needs a Russian-tanker deal); Macron's Gulf tour Oct 19–21; FII Riyadh Oct 26–29; Israel's Oct 27 election (Netanyahu "not convenient" before, unconstrained after). The desk cut two points on the Hezbollah readiness order and the two sinkings — the ceasefire is holding on the US side only.

US strikes on Iranian territory before Nov 3

Desk 25% (from 22%)Triggers: US-crewed/flagged vessel hit · mass-casualty Houthi strike · Hezbollah launch · tanker fire confirmed as IRGC strike

Triggers to monitor: the MOAB plan's existence (CNN) means the package is staged; two carriers in the Arabian Sea; "that's going to end very soon." A US casualty event collapses the midterm pause. Israel pre-emptive strike before Oct 27: 10% (Netanyahu's own words); after Oct 27: 30%.

Diplomatic channels: Oman and Qatar remain the back-channels (Araghchi–US meeting by Dec 31: 36%; Witkoff 35%); no UNSC action scheduled; the new channel is Washington–Moscow on tankers — a US–Russia shadow-fleet easing is the first concrete supply-side de-escalation of the war and would precede, not follow, a Hormuz framework. The Hezbollah readiness order and the Rubio–Aoun explosives call are the week's most under-priced development: a second front in Lebanon during Israel's election week is the scenario that forces Israel's hand regardless of the US pause. France's Saudi deployment and Macron's tour say Europe is pricing a Gulf-infrastructure strike.
